Why the World’s Biggest Banks Are Quietly Moving Into Crypto?
A few years ago, the idea of traditional banks embracing crypto was easy to dismiss. Today, that’s no longer the case.

Edul Patel shared thisThe UAE now has four regulated AED stablecoins live or approved. AE Coin, Zand's AED-Z, RAKBank's (in-principle), and DDSC on ADI Chain, which just processed a Dh110 million live transaction(the largest regulated stablecoin transfer in the region to date). This isn't a crypto story, it's an infrastructure story. While AED stablecoins go mainstream, the same rails are quietly rebuilding how money moves out of the Gulf, starting with the $200B+ that migrant workers send home every year to the Indian subcontinent and South East Asia. Today, exchange houses and MTOs may not touch crypto directly. They don't need to. Wrote about how Saber Money's stablecoin settlement is reshaping remittances behind the scenes. https://lnkd.in/dzakwPau?Stablecoins Are Quietly Rebuilding the Gulf's Remittance PipesStablecoins Are Quietly Rebuilding the Gulf's Remittance Pipes

Edul Patel shared thisIndia is an outlier among major global economies when it comes to crypto. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance reviewed various global regulatory approaches to crypto in its Securities Markets Code Report. -The US applies the Howey test to bring security-like tokens under existing law. -Singapore's Securities and Futures Act does the same for qualifying crypto assets. -The UK introduced dedicated Cryptoassets Regulations this year. -The EU's MiCA operates as a framework for crypto assets not already covered elsewhere. Every one of these jurisdictions found a way to act without waiting for a single, comprehensive statute. The Committee’s proposed Code adopts a technology-neutral definition of securities, as a broader, overarching policy rightly should. But the Committee also noted that while Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs) don’t always fit into traditional policy definitions of securities or derivatives, they are increasingly traded and invested in as financial assets. The current exclusion of VDAs from India's securities framework creates a grey area that leaves investors with limited remedies for fraud, market manipulation and various other risks while stunting market development. An interim, Self-Regulatory Organisation (SRO)-led mechanism is just what we need while we await a more comprehensive crypto policy framework. India’s crypto industry is well-placed to adopt a framework built around governance standards, disclosure, investor protection and grievance redressal while the broader legislative conversation continues.

Edul Patel shared thisThe DELTA Act (Digitisation and Exchange of Land Token Assets) being drafted by Maharashtra is India’s first solid signal of real world asset tokenisation becoming public policy. Real estate is India's largest illiquid asset class. A legal wrapper for tokenised land titles means faster transactions, cleaner ownership trails, and potentially, new mortgage and lending products built on programmable, verifiable ownership. Most asset tokenisation efforts globally have stalled when it comes to answering how token ownership is reconciled with existing title and registration law. It will be interesting to see how Maharashtra solves this. Image source: The Free Press Journal

Edul Patel shared thisJapan just moved assets out of its payments law and into the same securities framework that governs stocks and bonds. That brings insider trading rules, disclosure requirements and investor protections on par with traditional markets, and opens the door to spot Bitcoin ETFs and a more competitive tax regime. I shared my take with NDTV on what this means for Indian investors: First, this doesn't change India's tax or regulatory framework. But it does strengthen the global case for treating crypto as a mainstream investment class rather than a speculative one This indirectly benefits Indian investors by strengthening institutional participation and improving price discovery for crypto assets. Second, it widens the policy gap. Japan has paired stricter oversight with a more competitive tax framework specifically to bring capital and activity onshore. It shows recognition and proportionate taxation moving together. India has led the world in crypto adoption for three straight years. The opportunity to match that with regulatory leadership is still open. Read the full story in the link in the comments.

Edul Patel shared thisMost crypto investors in India who received a tax notice are not evaders. Nobody told them what Schedule VDA meant, that a crypto-to-crypto swap is a taxable event, that TDS deducted at the exchange is not the same as filing your return and that small gains still need to be reported. Honest mistakes but expensive consequences. Here’s something not many people know. There's a section of the Income Tax Act that lets you go back and correct a crypto filing from up to four years ago, voluntarily, before a notice arrives. It is called ITR-U for updated Returns under Section 139(8A). Correcting now costs a fraction of what it costs after the tax department comes to you first. A mismatch you self-correct is a routine filing. The same mismatch found during assessment becomes a notice, a penalty, and months of uncertainty. And the notices have been landing. 6.45 lakh people transacted in crypto in FY23. Fewer than 1 in 4 reported it in their returns. Mudrex and KoinX are doing something about this. We're calling it Course Correct. Fix past filings. File right this time. There’s a reason to act this year rather than next. India joins the OECD's Crypto Asset Reporting Framework in 2027. From that point, offshore exchange data automatically flows to India's tax authorities. The window where an honest mistake can sit quietly is closing. If you traded crypto in FY23, FY24 or FY25 and are not certain your filing was complete, this is the moment to check.

Edul Patel shared thisBlockchain's real efficiency isn't simply speed. It's the collapse of multiple steps into a simultaneous process. Execution, clearing and settlement are three separate steps in today's financial system. Tokenisation folds them into one, simultaneous process, governed by code rather than institutions. This is the shift the RBI has been watching closely, and it's also the core argument in Tobias Adrian's latest research for the International Monetary Fund on Real World Asset (RWA) tokenisation. Once code governs settlement, risk moves away from the balance sheets of banks and funds, towards the platforms and infrastructure running the system. That changes how financial intermediaries will need to operate. Deposits, lending, treasury functions, all pulled onto shared ledgers. Securities can move from issuance to settlement to custody in one integrated process. But along with efficiency comes concentration risk. Fewer platforms carrying more of the system's weight call for governance, interoperability and security to be more deeply integrated into the infrastructure. Instantaneous, 24x7 settlement needs code that can govern access and control at machine speed, and regulations that are just as precise. Does a tokenised record mean ownership? Is settlement legally recognised? Whose law applies when the ledger crosses borders? For a market like India, the upside is real. Tokenisation can solve inefficiencies in cross-border payments and market access that have persisted for decades. But capital that moves in easily, can move out just as easily, so capital controls will have to evolve alongside the technology. India has the opportunity to build the legal and regulatory scaffolding at the same pace as the technology, rather than after it.

Edul Patel shared this"RBI backs crypto containment and keeps ban on the table." That's the headline everyone is talking about today. But here's what the headlines don't tell you. The RBI has very clearly drawn a distinction between speculative crypto assets and the tokenisation of regulated financial assets. This reframes the question before policymakers from "What should India do about crypto?" to "How do we ensure that crypto policy doesn't unintentionally slow down financial innovation?" Tokenisation has the potential to modernise financial markets, improve capital efficiency and unlock entirely new financial products, all within regulated frameworks. Just as private institutions have driven innovation across payments, capital markets and financial services over the past decade, they also have an important role to play in building the infrastructure for tokenised real-world assets (RWAs). India has a unique opportunity to build differentiated frameworks that address investor protection and macroeconomic safeguards while creating room for innovation in blockchain-based financial infrastructure. It's also worth remembering that this is a collaborative process of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance consulting regulators, industry and other experts before arriving at its recommendations. That's how good policymaking should work. Image source: The Economic Times

Edul Patel posted thisBuilding the future of finance is as much about trust as it is about great products. As digital assets become a larger part of the financial ecosystem, the responsibility to prevent fraud and protect users grows alongside the opportunity to innovate. But financial crime isn't a challenge that any one company can solve alone. Joining ARIFAC gives Mudrex a forum to share with and learn from regulators, financial institutions, fintechs, and virtual asset service providers and continuously strengthen the ecosystem. Responsible innovation and strong compliance reinforce each other, and I look forward to building trust in India’s digital asset ecosystem together.

This week, Griffin's Citadel scooped up $10B+ in AI stocks from the Situational Awareness Fund, which got margin-called into oblivion. This is the same fund that was up 439% just a month earlier. The founder, a 25-year-old former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, wasn't wrong about AI. He was wrong about how much borrowed money to bet on it. 4x leverage turns a bad month into a forced one. Edul Patel liked thisReposting Edul's piece because it names the shift I see every week on the ground here in the Gulf. Four regulated AED stablecoins going live or approved, including DDSC's Dh110 million transfer, the largest regulated stablecoin transaction in the region so far. The real story sits underneath that. The settlement layer for remittances is being rebuilt, and the Banks, exchange houses and MTOs get every benefit without ever touching crypto. The regulated players I meet do not want a crypto asset on their balance sheet, even as a pass through, and they do not have to. Fiat in, fiat out, and the stablecoin rails do the heavy lifting in the background. When you are moving 200 billion dollars a year home to the Indian subcontinent and South East Asia, faster and cheaper settlement and more liquidity is not a nice to have - it is the business. Worth a read if you work anywhere near cross border payments. This is where the corridors are heading.Stablecoins Are Quietly Rebuilding the Gulf's Remittance PipesStablecoins Are Quietly Rebuilding the Gulf's Remittance Pipes

Edul Patel liked thisEdul Patel liked thisI’ve been a fintech operator for most of my career. As someone working in fintech, I’ve always looked down on crypto. “No use case”, “No real value”, “full scammers” were all phrases that several of my peers and myself used to throw around casually. Even the manner crypto operators behaved used to irk me. Telegram groups, pretentious user names, randomly tagging accounts on twitter for some unheard token launch, were all examples of how this adolescent industry behaved. That is until I started learning more about stablecoins. My first reaction was probably how I think a typical fintech guy would react - “Pfft, so crypto really needed a fiat currency to back its value, huh? So much for decentralisation and all that jazz” When I started learning about how stablecoins work in the real world is where my transition began. Understanding tokenisation was when I knew I had been converted.

I spent 5 years at Mudrex as an early engineer, scaling platform through the kind of growth that breaks things if you're not ahead of it. Now I'm taking that playbook to my next page. Platform engineering. Backend architecture. FinOps. DevOps. SRE. Shift-left security. Not consulting in the abstract. Hands-on work from someone who's been inside a fast-scaling fintech and knows what breaks, what holds, and what to build before you need it. If you're a founder or an engineering leader whose platform is starting to creak under growth, infra costs climbing, deployments getting fragile, team stretched thin, that's exactly the stage I work best at. Many early-stage founders in India are being misled by so-called funding facilitators. These players promise investor access but often: - Demand advisory equity (1–5%) upfront just for introductions. - Charge huge retainers without outcomes. - Operate without SEBI registration or credentials. - Exploit incubator ties to extract equity from startups. Remember: genuine investment bankers step in after growth stage, not at seed. Early founders need angels, grants, and micro-VCs and not middlemen. Always verify track record, avoid upfront equity deals, and insist on success-based engagement. #Startup #Entrepreneurship #Fundraising
