Monique Lempers heeft dit gedeeldToday I had the honor of speaking at the United Nations Global Compact Leaders Summit about a core pillar of our mission at Fairphone: the urgent need to implement a true living wage across global supply chains. The truth is, ending poverty wages and dangerous mining conditions in the consumer tech industry isn't an idealistic dream, it is actionable right now. We have proven that by adding just over $1 to the cost of a smartphone, we can bridge the wage gap for factory workers and directly fund fairer mineral extraction. Ethical tech isn't a margin problem; it's a priority problem. The blueprint is already built, proven, and open-source. Now it’s about collective action: with the right priorities in place, the entire industry can shift model practices and lift millions of workers and artisanal miners out of poverty. #UNGlobalCompact #LivingWage #EthicalTech #Fairphone #SupplyChain #Sustainability #HumanRights

Monique Lempers heeft dit gedeeldOnly few days to go... NY here we come :-)Monique Lempers heeft dit gedeeldFairphone is heading to New York this September for both the UN Private Sector Forum and the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2026. We aren't going just to join the conversation. We are going to push it further. For decades, living wages and basic human rights have been treated as voluntary ESG milestones, as nice-to-have metrics buried in annual corporate reports. But true systemic change doesn't happen in report footnotes. It happens when these issues are treated as the starting point, the baseline from which the rest of your corporate strategy begins. They should be non-negotiable and fundamental to your operation. Just like it is to Fairphone. Our CEO Raymond van Eck and Chief Impact Officer Monique Lempers (who also currently serves as the UN Global Compact Network Netherlands Board Chair) will be representing Fairphone across three key sessions focused on shifting the status quo, speaking from the wealth of experience that Fairphone has amassed over the last 16 years. ➡️ UN Private Sector Forum When: Sunday, September 20 | UN Headquarters Who's participating: CEO Raymond van Eck together with UN Secretary-General António Guterres Focus: Accelerating a just transition to clean energy, scaling renewable infrastructure, and strengthening supply chain resilience in public-private collaboration. ➡️ Leadership Dialogue on Human Rights When: Tuesday, September 22 | International Labour Organization Headquarters Who's participating: CIO Monique Lempers Focus: Moving human rights from ethical theory to executive accountability and core corporate strategy. ➡️ Collective Action & Systems Change When: Wednesday, September 23 | New York Marriott Marquis Who's participating: CIO Monique Lempers Focus: Operationalizing living wages across complex, multi-tier supply chains to build human-first resilience. Will you or your organization be attending the Private Sector Forum or Leaders Summit in New York this month? Let us know via the comments below or a direct message. We’d love to connect, exchange insights, and build momentum together. See you there!

Monique Lempers heeft dit gedeeldHonored to speak at the University of Amsterdam MBA Business Seminar today at the stunning Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ! 🏛️ My core message to the students: Business can be a powerful force for good—if you have the courage to build it that way. It was a pleasure sharing the stage with Erik de Groot, who delivered an inspiring talk on his journey founding Boldwill. Judging by the photos, I am happy to see that heads were up and some screens were down! Joking aside, receiving such enthusiastic feedback and engaging questions from the students was deeply energizing. I am genuinely looking forward to seeing many more purpose-driven ventures pop up in the coming years. A big thank you to Mark van der Veen for the invitation and organization! 📸 Photo credit: Ineke Oostveen #BusinessForGood #PurposeDriven #UvAMBA #Leadership #Entrepreneurship #ImpactBusiness

Monique Lempers heeft dit gedeeldYes, a phone that is repairable is used longer! In today's piece by Trouw, they look into a fundamental question for circular electronics: does repairability actually translate into real-world longevity? Our numbers show that the user time of our phones is significantly higher than the market average. As you can see in the two graphs on page 44 and 45 from our latest impact report. Proof 1 (Longevity Scores & Lifespan): Our expected device lifespan is almost double the market average of 3 years. In 2025, our Fairphone 4 achieved a longevity score result of 6.5 years and Fairphone 5 reached 6.2 years, exceeding our original targets. Proof 2 (Active Usage vs. Market Benchmark): Looking at active devices by age, Fairphone consistently remains well above the market average curve across every year benchmark. Even at the 4 to 6-year mark, a massive percentage of our devices are still actively in use, directly saving raw materials, water, and CO₂ emissions. Designing for modularity, providing spare parts, and ensuring long-term software support isn't just an ideal, it fundamentally changes consumer behavior and keeps electronics out of landfills. Monique Lempers heeft dit gedeeldAt Fairphone, impact is not an afterthought. It’s the baseline. Yesterday, we unveiled the Fairphone (Gen. 6+) in a striking new colorway: Cobalt Blue. This color is a direct tribute to our supply chain milestones and expanded investments with partners like the Fair Cobalt Alliance to improve working conditions in artisanal mines. Every device represents thousands of decisions: ➡️ Over 50% fair or recycled materials by total weight ➡️ Industry-leading low footprint of approximately 30 kg CO₂e ➡️ 100% e-waste neutral footprint ➡️ Assembled in fairer factories backed by renewable energy We don’t claim to be perfect, but we are proving that electronics can be produced with deep respect for workers and the planet. Monique Lempers heeft dit gerepostMonique Lempers heeft dit gerepost21 kilograms of electronics. That’s how much the average person in the Netherlands throws away every single year. The kicker? Only 8.7% actually gets repaired. We’re out to change that. Fairphone has officially joined forces with a coalition of over 70 organizations and scientists to back the manifesto 'Accessible Electronics Repair for Everyone', which was presented to Dutch policymakers in The Hague today. Together, we are demanding changes that make repair affordable, easy, and inclusive: - Making repair affordable: We need to ensure that repairing a device can financially compete with buying a brand-new one. - Making repair easy: Consumers deserve transparent insights into the repairability and lifespan of their products, and professional repairers need to be much easier to find. - Making repair inclusive: By leveraging the thriving repair sector, we can create meaningful, social employment opportunities for people who have been left on the sidelines of the labor market. The willingness from consumers and businesses is already there. Now we just need the legislation to back this up. Together, we can make repair the logical choice. 👉 Read the full study here: https://lnkd.in/eGJQF_fY #RightToRepair #CircularEconomy #Fairphone #SystemicChange

Monique Lempers heeft dit gedeeldMagic happens when impact-driven minds get into the same room.✨ I had a fantastic evening yesterday speaking at the 'Good Talks' event organized by The Sharing Group. For those unfamiliar, they are an amazing venture builder and ecosystem focusing on tech companies that scale the sharing economy for a more sustainable future. Sharing the stage with Niels Bosma and Norbert Kleijn, as well as speaking with some of the 'aandelers' (shareholders & clients at the same time) during the afterborrel was an absolute highlight. It is beautiful to find a community of entrepreneurs so genuinely committed to collaboration and purpose-driven growth. A massive thank you to Sicco Beerda for bringing us together and sparking such vital conversations. Looking forward to seeing the ripples from last night's ideas! #Impact #BusinesForGood #SharingEconomy #GoodTalks #Fairphone

Monique Lempers heeft hierop gereageerdWhat do you talk about when you're invited to speak at the United Nations Global Compact Leaders Summit in New York, in front of almost 1,000 business leaders? I could have talked about access to safe drinking water or plastic pollution. Instead, I talked about how business leaders can shift their thinking. We often treat the systems we operate in as if they're simply there. But systems don't just happen. People design them, and businesses help sustain them every single day. That means we can redesign them. Which starts by asking a different question. At Dopper, we don't ask "How do we sell more reusable bottles?" We ask "What needs to change so people no longer need bottled water?" At Lago Lago festival from Chasing the Hihat Events, we didn't try to convince every visitor to skip bottled water. We asked what it would take for the festival to stop selling it. At Schiphol Airport Retail, we asked what if refilling bottles became convenient choice? Then they removed bottled water from all twelve of its stores, preventing more than 750,000 single-use bottles a year. In Nepal, doing more projects wasn't enough. At our pace, reaching everyone would take 1,500 years. So with governments, communities and WaterAid, we're building an open-source blueprint that others can use and scale. Targets, reporting and disclosure matter. But leadership also means questioning the systems our businesses create. Because every business grows something. So the question isn't only "How do we grow our business?" It's "What system grows because our business grows?" Monique Lempers heeft hierop gereageerdMonique Lempers heeft hierop gereageerdThis Sunday I had the immense privilege of representing Fairphone at the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the 2026 UN Private Sector Forum. Sitting alongside Heads of State, fellow global CEOs, UN Secretary-General António Guterres and United Nations Global Compact Executive Director Sanda Ojiambo, we tackled the defining challenge of our time: advancing a clean, just, and secure energy future. During the roundtable sessions, we were challenged with four critical questions. Here is how I addressed them from the Fairphone perspective: Where should we focus investment to accelerate the transition? We must invest in circularity and longevity. Up to 80% of a smartphone's carbon footprint is locked into the production phase. By designing modular devices meant to last, and actively encouraging repair, we drastically reduce the need for raw material extraction and lower the strain on energy-intensive manufacturing. What policy and market changes are needed to unlock investment at scale? We need governments to mandate circular design and incentivize the shift to renewable energy in supply chains. At Fairphone, we reduced the product carbon footprint of our new Fairphone Gen. 6 by 30%, largely by ensuring that 28% of the electricity used in component manufacturing comes from renewable sources. Clear market signals will force the rest of the industry to make the shift. How can we make the transition investable in emerging countries? By directly funding the people on the ground. Whether it is our partnership in Ghana to enable a living income for informal e-waste pickers, or purchasing mineral credits that directly support artisanal miners in the DRC, we are proving that investing in local, informal economies yields massive environmental and social dividends. How do we ensure the transition delivers broad-based benefits? A transition is only successful if it is just. We cannot build a clean future on the back of poverty wages. Fairphone pays a living wage bonus to the factory workers assembling our devices, which costs just over $1 per phone. There is simply no financial excuse for the broader tech industry not to do the same. As Secretary-General Guterres powerfully reminded us today, the fastest path to economic and national security is a swift, just transition away from fossil fuels. At Fairphone, we are proving that an ethical, circular business model is not only possible but highly viable. We have shown the blueprint. Now, it is time for the global consumer electronics industry to step up and follow suit.

Monique Lempers heeft hierop gereageerdMonique Lempers heeft hierop gereageerdBoy, I hope the Fairphonee social media team is all over this trend. What a gift they just got! The hottest trend on social media this week is people, mainly Gen Zs, posting joke photos of the organs they had to sell to afford the new iPhone 18. Yes, yes, the same Gen Zs who pride themselves on being the most ethical, socially aware, and cost-sensitive generation in history, now queuing for iPhones, taking loans to afford them, and joking about it on social media. According to the latest polls, around 87% of young people in the US either own or plan to buy a new iPhone. Why is this such good leverage for Fairphone? Because it's an opportunity to hold a mirror up to the trend and raise awareness: thanks to its fair labour conditions and its use of responsibly sourced materials, no worker and no child has to sacrifice their health. And all in a price that also allows their buyers to keep the kidneys in place too. The internet is running gags about what the phone costs? A rare chance to show them who really pays for it.

Monique Lempers vond dit interessantThe new government budget worries me when it comes to the circular economy. This was my first thought after seeing the 2027 national budget plan. I am disappointed to see that despite our best efforts with Future Up, the budget for the circular economy has been cut by 40%, from €100 million down to €60 million. And in the next years this will only continue decreasing. As frontrunners in creating circular products, it’s frustrating to see that the Dutch government is putting the brakes on building a more future-proof economy and making it harder for circular innovation to scale. On top of that, the government still does not want to lift the exemption of mineral water from the consumption tax on non-alcoholic beverages, which is basically a fossil fuel subsidy. Lifting the exemption could raise an additional €138 million. To me, these choices are difficult to reconcile with the ambition to build a circular economy. If we’re serious about a circular future, the budget has to reflect it, not undercut it. Are you curious about the impact we made last year in Uganda, Malawi, and Zambia? Then be sure to take a look at our Impact Report! We take you to our three countries and provide an update on developments over the past year. We also share the numbers: how many children we reach, how many camps we organise, and how many coaches are active. Did you know, for example, that we currently have 40 active Coaches? And that Hockey Dreams reached more than 3000 children in Kampala, Lusaka, and Blantyre over the past year? In addition to the numbers, we share stories from new and graduated coaches. We describe their steps, including in the areas of education and personal development. One development we are particularly proud of: Hockey Dreams Uganda is officially a local NGO! Former participants are part of the board, and that is essential: we strongly believe in local ownership. We also see wonderful developments on the hockey field. Talented coaches are progressing towards the international hockey stage. Take a look at the "coaching & development" and "player achievements" pages and see how we work with the International Hockey Federation (FIH). In short, there is a lot going on. And we are proud of everyone who contributes to this every day: our coaches, partners, volunteers, supporters, and of course, the children. We are therefore very grateful to our two new volunteers, Patricia van Nieuwenhuyzen-Deutman and @Alexandra, who are working incredibly hard. Do you want to contribute to the projects and make even more impact with us? Then please send us a message 💚

🌿 GroenGezond has launched: a broad movement with around 40 partners including WWF, Demeter, Land van Ons and Triodos Foundation, showing that healthy food starts with a healthy food system. A system where we work with nature, not against it. 🐝 How our food is grown really matters. It affects the quality of our air, water and soil. It determines how many insects, birds and pollinators remain. And ultimately, it shapes our own health and that of our children. 🌱 What isn’t healthy for nature, isn’t healthy for us either. That’s why GroenGezond was founded. To show that things can be done differently. Food without chemical additives, healthy soils, care for animals, fair opportunities for farmers, and more plants on our plates are not only desirable, but achievable. And all these elements reinforce each other. 🤝 Within the #GroenGezond movement, farmers, doctors, conservation organisations, researchers, food initiatives and citizens work together. Through campaigns, stories and practical initiatives, we’re building a food system (step by step) where healthy and nature-positive eating becomes the norm once again. 🔗 Want to know more? 🌍 Proud to Lead the Next Level Grant Facility (NLGF) – Powering Local Climate Action in Zambia 🌱 Under the Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) programme and supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Next Level Grant Facility (NLGF) is transforming how climate finance reaches those who need it most — grassroots actors often excluded from traditional funding streams. As the lead for this initiative in Zambia, I’m excited to share that we’ve supported 56 community groups (100% disbursement rate!) across key thematic areas — food systems, water, energy, gender, and health — through short-term grants (2–4 months) aimed at climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience. 📌 Key highlights: +1300 applications received across two calls from 11 Districts of Zambia (Lusaka, Southern and Central provinces) 45 grantees selected in 2024 | 33 in community gardening, 12 in diverse sectors 11 additional grantees in 2025 focusing on non-gardening solutions Prioritized youth, women, and persons with disabilities Projects span sustainable farming, renewable energy, water access, waste management, and climate-related health solutions 🚀 What makes NLGF different? Open to informal and unregistered groups Accessible application formats (video, audio, handwritten) Guided by inclusivity, transparency, and local ownership Designed to scale community-led innovations 💡 Lessons learned: Build grantee capacity for procurement Disburse admin funds early Schedule borehole works before rainy season NLGF is managed by People’s Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia (PPHPZ), with alliance partners including WWF, HIVOS, South South North, and Akina Mama Wa Afrika. This is what climate justice in action looks like — putting power and resources in the hands of those already driving change in their communities. #ClimateJustice #LocalSolutions #NLGF #VCA #GrassrootsClimateAction #Zambia #InclusiveDevelopment #ClimateFinance #CommunityResilience #Sustainability
