Testing Methodology

Review Principles

Our reviews are designed to provide real-world insights backed by consistent, objective testing. We evaluate gear based on how it performs in practical, professional scenarios as well as standardized environments.

Hands-On Evaluation

Real-World Field Testing: Every camera, lens, and accessory undergoes rigorous field testing in diverse shooting environments.

Image Quality and Performance:

  • Sensors and Image Quality: We evaluate dynamic range, high-ISO noise performance, and other factors of image making.
  • Autofocus: We test subject detection (when available), tracking persistence, burst rate capability, and buffer clearance speeds.
  • Video: We test video modes for rolling shutter, heat management, dynamic range, log profile flexibility, IBIS performance, audio inputs, and more.
  • Optics: Lenses are tested for center-to-corner sharpness, chromatic aberration, longitudinal chromatic aberration, comatic aberration (in the case of certain wide-angle, astro-focused optics), flare resistance, distortion, vignetting, and bokeh characteristics.

Consistency & Fairness

  • Pre-Production Gear: Reviews conducted on pre-production hardware or firmware are clearly marked. Final evaluations are only assigned once production-ready hardware and firmware have been received.
  • Comparative Benchmarking: Gear is evaluated relative to its price point, intended audience, and market competition to ensure fair, contextualized judgment.
