Off[symbol::tag]

switches off a message, so that it is no longer printed.

Off["name"]

switches off a named group of messages.

Off[s]

switches off tracing messages associated with the symbol s.

Off

Off[symbol::tag]

switches off a message, so that it is no longer printed.

Off["name"]

switches off a named group of messages.

Off[s]

switches off tracing messages associated with the symbol s.

Off[m1,m2,…]

switches off several messages or message groups.

Details

  • The value of symbol::tag is not affected by Off.
  • $MessageGroups gives the list of possible message groups.
  • Off[General::name] switches off all messages derived from General::name.
  • Off[s] is equivalent to Off[s::trace].
  • Off[] is equivalent to Off[s::trace] for all symbols.

Examples

Basic Examples  (2)

The following issues a message:

Wolfram Language code: Log[a, b, c]

Switch off the message:

Wolfram Language code: Off[Log::argt]

Now no message is issued:

Wolfram Language code: Log[a, b, c]

Switch the message back on:

Wolfram Language code: On[Log::argt]

Do not suppress duplicated messages:

Wolfram Language code: Off[General::stop]

All five messages are issued:

Wolfram Language code: Do[0 ^ 0, 5]

Restore the default behavior:

Wolfram Language code: On[General::stop]

After the third repetition, further identical messages are suppressed:

Wolfram Language code: Do[0 ^ 0, 5]

Scope  (4)

Turn off multiple messages:

Wolfram Language code: Off[Power::infy, Power::indet]

No messages are issued:

Wolfram Language code: {1 / 0, 0 ^ 0}

Turn the messages back on:

Wolfram Language code: On[Power::infy, Power::indet]

Now messages appear:

Wolfram Language code: {1 / 0, 0 ^ 0}

Turn off the "Compiler" message group to prevent compiler messages from being issued:

Wolfram Language code: Off["Compiler"]

No message is issued for an incorrect input:

Wolfram Language code: f = Compile[{{x, _Real}}, x]; f[I]

Restore the default behavior:

Wolfram Language code: On["Compiler"]

The message is no longer suppressed:

Wolfram Language code: f[I]

Getting the values of symbols is normally done silently:

Wolfram Language code: a = 1;a

Use On to enable tracing of the symbol:

Wolfram Language code: On[a]
Wolfram Language code: a = 1;a

Turn tracing off:

Wolfram Language code: Off[a]
Wolfram Language code: a = 1;a

Turn on tracing for multiple symbols:

Wolfram Language code: On[a, b]

Assign values to the symbols. As their values are set but not accessed, no tracing message is generated:

Wolfram Language code: a = 1;b = 2;

Retrieve the value of the symbols; now, tracing messages are generated:

Wolfram Language code: {a, b}

Turn off tracing for all symbols:

Wolfram Language code: Off[]

No messages are issued during access:

Wolfram Language code: {a, b}

Properties & Relations  (2)

Quiet can be used to leave messages on globally but suppress them in a particular computation:

Wolfram Language code: Quiet[1 / 0, {Power::infy}]

The message is still issued by default for computations in the kernel session:

Wolfram Language code: 1 / 0

Check can be used to determine if a message was issued:

Wolfram Language code: Check[1 / 0, "message issued"]

If a message is turned off, Check no longer reports message generation:

Wolfram Language code: Off[Power::infy]
Wolfram Language code: Check[1 / 0, "message issued"]

Restore the message:

Wolfram Language code: On[Power::infy]
