Invalid clicks: Definition

Invalid clicks are clicks on your ads that don't represent a genuine interest in your business.

Examples of invalid clicks

  • Accidental clicks: Clicks that occur because of poor ad placement.
  • Automated traffic: Clicks from automated tools, bots, or other deceptive software.
  • Manual clicks: Clicks that increase your ad costs or inflate publisher profits.

You won’t be charged for invalid clicks or impressions. When Google’s automated protections determine that clicks are invalid, those interactions are filtered out of your campaign metrics and removed from your billing. If Google detects invalid clicks after you were previously billed for them, you receive a credit on your next invoice where appropriate and possible.

Learn more about how Google protects your campaigns from invalid traffic, invalid traffic metrics, and what to do if you get unusual traffic on your campaigns.

Note: In rare cases, your reports might show more conversions than clicks. This happens when a click leads to a conversion, but Google later identifies the click as invalid and filters it out. Google removes the invalid click from campaign metrics, but the valid conversion remains.
