Andrea Angella reposted thisAndrea Angella reposted thisAs CTO, something I think about more than almost anything else right now is how much responsibility we let AI take on inside core systems like database environments. These are too critical to treat AI as an add-on or a black box. Asking AI to explain why a query is running slowly (which helps someone get an answer faster) is a read-only operation, but giving AI the ability to actually change the database is a potentially catastrophic read-write action. There’s no room for error when an incomplete recommendation can immediately impact performance, availability, security, and compliance. Databases are systems of record, holding sensitive information and supporting the applications a business depends on. That's got to be at the heart of any roadmap for database AI, not bolted on afterwards. Our own research from this year's State of the Database Landscape report, found that the number of organizations using AI for database management tripled within 12-months, with 46% (412) reporting real productivity gains and 76% (687) reporting meaningful cost savings. However, 64% (1373) still name security and privacy as their leading concern. All those things can be true at once! Organizations are feeling that adoption is racing ahead of their confidence to control what they've unleashed. Redgate Assistant is our answer to that gap. Andrea Angella posted thisDo you know me? I don't know you, but as time goes by, I find myself less and less interested in LinkedIn and in the 15K+ followers I have. It feels odd and disconnected and it no longer satisfies me. I value real connections with real people, both in person and online, and I care about engagement, listening to other point of view, and having interesting debates on all kinds of topics, at work and outside work. Over the past few months I've been going through a big transformation. I've started being much more social in my personal life instead of hiding behind a computer, travelling a lot more, and meeting new people... and I can tell, the difference in my life satisfaction and overall happiness is incredible compared to last year! I’ve had this idea on my "one day" list: open a memory dump and explore it as a 3D world. Follow references between objects, inspect roots, move between GC regions, and see the connections rather than just read about them in tables. I never found the time to build it. But this is exactly what new AI era enables - you turn your ideas into reality. Over the weekend with Claude Code, built with Three.js and ClrMD. It is not vibe coding, it is not one-shot prompt. The domain knowledge still matters. Many iterations of polishing, reviewing and validating the results to shape into usable, final direction.

There is a fundamental joy about taking a problem and then using your brain to figure out how to solve it. Maybe I am unusual in this, but I don't think so. The world has many problems that need solving and the only way we are going to create the next generation of problem solvers is by equipping our young people with the fundamentals of maths, science and technology. Tools like calculators, computers and ai are great but they need to supplement the greatest tool we have our brains.

We chose to get married in Bury St Edmunds, close to Frankie’s mum Andy, who is 84 and isn't able to travel great distances these days. Having her there mattered to us. So we took the wedding to her. A beautiful day, surrounded by people we love and the start of another chapter together. And yes... I’m still getting used to saying “my wife”.

Here is what I've learned and what I wish I knew back then: 1) Fear kept me there longer than it should have Fear was keeping me in place at Amazon. If I could have anticipated my happiness and success, I would have left Amazon much earlier. I did struggle with some identity loss after leaving, and I do miss the brilliant coworkers, but truthfully I stayed as long as I did out of fear of the unknown and the fear of starting over. 2) My work now is much more fulfilling than my work at Amazon was. I liked my job and my coworkers, but I didn't realize what I was missing. I didn’t realize that I would have the chance to work purely on something I am good at, on my own time, and with people of my choosing. 3) Money can come easily. I left Amazon with no intentions to make much money. I just wanted to help others and live a mostly “retired” life. I thought maybe I would earn a bit here and there through some mix of resume reviews and coaching. Instead, by pursuing a mission and doing what I love, I make most of my Amazon VP income working a fraction of my Amazon VP hours. The money can be easy for three reasons: (a) Late in your career, you understand business, product, and how to make things customers love. (b) You know what your gifts are and what excites you. When you are doing work you love and are good at, you tend to do a great job. Read The Almanack of Naval Ravikant for more on this. (c) The Internet allows you to find a few people who will pay you for what you love to do. See Kevin Kelly's famous article, “1000 True Fans” at **kk.org.** I make all my money from a few thousand people who can easily afford to pay, while freely giving away most of what I do to hundreds of thousands who cannot. Here are a few bonus observations: 4) You will still be busy in “retirement”! I still have a packed calendar. Between work I love, friends, family, and travel, I am always busy. I could not possibly go back to a 60-hour-a-week job without sacrificing so much I have gained. You will not be sitting around unless you make it that way. 5) Work friends are not real friends. They are sincere, but they are busy with their own lives. When you no longer have work tasks and office time in common, most relationships will die off. Less than 5 people I worked with over my 15 years at Amazon have remained in touch. The lesson here is to invest in your relationships outside of work, as only those will remain. I am enjoying another year of life post-Amazon, and my mission remains to pay forward my good fortune by helping others find career success and satisfaction. I started this project years ago because I wanted my terminal to look and work better. Today, Microsoft announced Project Zenith, and oh-my-posh is part of it. I’m excited. I’m proud. And I’m also a little scared. There’s something very different about maintaining an open source project knowing it’s going to be part of the Windows developer experience. And I guess the next time someone tells me their software is too big or too important to release every day, I can say I do multiple releases a day for software that ships with Windows. Negli ultimi anni, in numero sempre crescente, sono stati realizzati piccoli dispositivi embedded, spesso connessi in qualche modo fra loro, che svolgono "semplici" ma utili funzionalità. Questi dispositivi utilizzano piattaforme hardware molto limitate in termini di memoria disponibile e capacità di elaborazione tanto che spesso non è necessario l'utilizzo di un sistema operativo. In questo scenario, fino a qualche anno fa, non era possibile sfruttare le tecnologie Microsoft, perché i sistemi operativi embedded che essa fornisce hanno requisiti hardware e di memoria eccessivi. Per questo motivo entra in gioco una nuova e innovativa proposta di Microsoft: il .NET Micro Framework.

IAM is not login. It is control. I have seen many SSO implementations that worked perfectly in demos and UAT, yet were fundamentally wrong in real life. This is mostly a problem when setting up new client ecosystems. Mature environments usually have IAM discipline. New ones rarely do. Keycloak often gets blamed. That is convenient. The issue is not the tool, It is the thinking and miss architecture. Teams stop at authentication. Once users can log in, the work is declared complete. Authorization is rushed. Roles are loosely defined. Access accumulates quietly and never gets revisited. SSO then becomes a risk amplifier. One identity. Too much access. Everywhere. The core mistake is confusing identity with entitlement. Job titles become roles. Roles become permanent. Tokens are trusted blindly. Applications stop enforcing controls because they assume IAM handled it. That is not IAM. That is convenience mistaken for security. SSO is only the entry point. Real IAM begins after login. If an IAM design does not feel uncomfortable during review, it is probably too permissive.

“You’ll be dependent on the developer.” 🥵 As someone who’s spent years building bespoke systems for growing businesses, I don’t dismiss this concern. I validate it because it’s real. Bespoke software does create dependency!! Yet the reality most businesses rarely acknowledge is that you already have dependency 😬... You’re just outsourcing it to faceless platforms, unstable pricing models and product roadmaps that in reality don’t care about your business goals. What does off-the-shelf software dependency look like? 👀 Limited control over system changes 👀 Forced updates that break workflows 👀 Rising subscription fees with minimal added value 👀 Support queues instead of solutions 👀 Features built for the masses, not your model Bespoke dependency is different. ✅ It’s measurable. ✅ It’s accountable. ✅ It’s strategic. You’re not locked into a product. You’re investing in a system that reflects your operations, powered by a partner who knows your data flows, decision points and performance thresholds. From a risk perspective, bespoke dependency is actually more controllable: 🔥 You influence the roadmap 🔥 You prioritise fixes and improvements 🔥 You own the logic and processes 🔥 You reduce operational friction year on year The real business risk isn’t dependence. It’s fragmentation, inefficiency and loss of control over your own systems. And as someone who sees the internal workings of businesses daily, I can tell you this with confidence that the companies that scale sustainably are not the ones avoiding dependency.
