Martin SFP Bryant shared thisWelcome to the Ground State Ventures portfolio, Azulene Labs! Nicolas Sawaya and his team's quantum-mechanical AI models will allow drugs and other chemicals to be developed with a level of precision unseen until now. The technology can significantly improve product development across pharma, agriculture, energy storage, and industrial chemicals. Azulene Labs is rebuilding the simulation stack to make chemistry and biochemistry modeling truly predictive for the first time. It is building high-accuracy physics-based foundation models that provide around 100 times the efficiency of competitors while being at least 200 times more cost-effective. And bravo for them embracing the 'unconventional team photo' approach 🙌

As we grow, we’re looking for an Executive Assistant to support the work of our founder and General Partner, Ton van 't Noordende. Martin SFP Bryant shared thisOkay, I know I announced this in July (because I was speaking at a conference and it would have been weird not to have had the role on my LinkedIn profile) but now it's properly official-official! Pleased to say I'm Head of Communications at Ground State Ventures. The team here is incredible, and we're working to back the best early-stage teams in quantum technology around the world. I'm heading up all of our external communications and also helping make sure portfolio companies get set on the right path when it comes to talking about themselves. Great to be working with Ton van 't Noordende, Chad Rigetti, Kris Kaczmarek and the team... and to be joining at the same time as Shahar Graf, who joins as Head of Ecosystem. Oh, and here's my headshot, which (to my eyes) seems to show that my trips to the gym seem to be starting to have an effect on my arms! Let's goooo!

Martin SFP Bryant shared thisI'm in my element on stage... whether that's giving a talk about tech trends, moderating a panel... or even doing karaoke. I did two of those things last week. I was onstage at TechBBQ in Copenhagen, moderating a panel on deep tech brand building that featured Robert Daniel Nagy, Bart Segers, and Gina Krymalowski. 30 minutes can be a long time on a panel or a really short time, depending how the conversation goes. In this case, we could have easily filled twice the time with useful insights from the panel. As for the karaoke... well, that was Vikas Shah MBE DL's fault on Saturday, and I believe Naomi Timperley FRSA has the evidence. ('Somewhere in my Heart' by Aztec Camera is now my go-to song - written about living in the hills above Stockport, don't you know)

Martin SFP Bryant shared thisVery happy to be a judge again for the Prolific North Tech Awards. As someone who has always lived in the North of England despite working with companies all over the world, I have a special connection to this place. That means I’d love to see brilliant entries from across the Northern tech community. If you or your team have achieved something worth shouting about over the past year, this is your chance to get it recognised. Plus, 13 of the categories are completely free to enter! 📅 Deadline for entries is just over a week away: 28 August. Get on it! Links below in the comments...

Martin SFP Bryant shared thisI love Copenhagen. I first went there for a two-day tour of the country's startup landscape about 15 years ago, but it's been a while since my last visit. So it's a pleasure to be there next week for TechBBQ. I'll be moderating panel a discussion on how to build a tech-led brand. As I write this, we've just had the briefing call. Looking forward to representing Ground State Ventures and chatting about deep-tech brand-building with Bart Segers, Gina Krymalowski, and Robert Daniel Nagy. My GSV colleague Kris Kaczmarek is also going to be there, speaking on a panel about where quantum actually stands right now. Sadly, my schedule means I'm only there for the Wednesday. If you want to say hi, let me know and let's meet up!

Martin SFP Bryant shared thisAt Ground State Ventures we want to give our portfolio company founders a strong understanding of the importance of communication, right from the start. Just the word 'quantum' is enough to leave some people baffled, so knowing how to tell a relatable story about what you're building as a founder is essential. It was a real pleasure to shoot this video with Samuele Grandi to mark Arq Quantum Technologies joining our portfolio recently. I think it came out really well. If you want to understand what the quantum internet is, Sam does a great job of explaining it here.

Martin SFP Bryant shared thisI’ve enjoyed all sorts of work over the years, but the roles I’ve enjoyed the most are those where I feel I’m really building something important alongside other people with that same drive and ambition. And that’s what I’ve found at Ground State Ventures, where I’m pleased to say I’m taking on the role of Head of Communications. I first worked with Ton van 't Noordende five years ago, in the early days of his role as a specialist quantum tech startup investor. Gradually, the occasional bit of work to help with an announcement turned into regularly working on QDNL Participations communications projects. But since the rebrand to Ground State Ventures earlier this year, there’s really not the scope for this to be a handful of days per month. There’s just too much to do, and so I’m going all in. The sheer ambition of what Ton, Chad, Kris, and the whole team are building here is incredible. We already have a really exciting portfolio of quantum technology startups across the US and Europe, spanning quantum computing, sensing, and communications, and there’s so much more to come. I’ll be working across all of the firm’s own communications at a busy time of expansion, and helping our portfolio companies build strong communications into their game plan from the beginning. Let’s gooooo…. 🚀

Martin SFP Bryant liked thisMartin SFP Bryant liked thisI’ve been keeping an eye on the amount of government money piling into quantum tech around the world. The Quantum Insider's tracker, as of Q3 2026, puts confirmed government funding - money actually allocated or spent - at $40.9 billion, with a further $160.6 billion (!) announced but not yet allocated, across 40 nations plus the EU. A couple of recent additions to add to that total: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched a competition to accelerate development of the world’s first fault-tolerant quantum computer. This initiative has up to $215 million in planned funding. Applications are open for proposals to deploy quantum computers with at least 100 logical qubits that are capable of performing hundreds of millions fault-tolerant operations and scientific demonstration programs. Meanwhile, the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and UK Research and Innovation are to jointly invest more than $10 million in eight research projects into quantum chemistry. It’s good to see investment in transatlantic cooperation at a time when sovereignty is the buzzword on everyone’s lips. Read more via the links in the comments…

Martin SFP Bryant liked thisMartin SFP Bryant liked thisLinkedIn's AI slop has boosted the market for human ghostwriters. 🖊️ Plenty of people expected AI to kill this job. Instead, execs are now paying to sound like an actual person. About 81% of long LinkedIn posts in July were likely AI-generated, according to originality.ai. LinkedIn even added a button to flag a post as "AI slop" and drop it from your feed. The Financial Times says there's now a word for the clichés-and-line-breaks style: "broetry." How ghostwriting works: For execs: a journalist-style interview of an hour or so, then a post written in your voice. For ghostwriters: earn up to £350 a post, as reported by one UK ex-journalist. Tony Albrecht's Toronto team of nine serves around 40 US lawyers. He says the business has more than doubled in a year. A ghostwriter is still a middleman, and readers can't tell who wrote what. But the interview is the real source of value, because someone has to push a founder until a real thought comes out. A chatbot could never. Some agencies are also accused of using engagement pods to fake reach. If you hire one, ask how they grow an account before you ask what they charge. 📩 I break down what's actually happening across social media, the creator economy, and AI every week in Geekout. Martin SFP Bryant liked thisI really enjoyed being part of the India’s AI Film Future event at the Manchester Indian Film Festival yesterday, particularly because we had the opportunity to watch a series of AI-created short films before debating what they might tell us about the future of creativity. And that made the conversation much more interesting. For me, the opportunity isn’t AI making films. It’s AI enabling more people to make films. If these tools can lower some of the traditional barriers around cost, equipment, specialist skills and the size of production teams, whose stories might suddenly become possible to tell? That could be incredibly important for emerging filmmakers, women, young people and creators from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds who havent always had equal access to the industry. But democratising the tools doesnt automatically democratise creativity. AI can generate an image, a voice or a scene. What it can't bring on its own is lived experience, cultural understanding, intent, taste, judgement and the reason a story needs to be told. Those things remain profoundly human. We also talked about what happens to jobs and skills, copyright, consent, likeness, provenance and bias. These aren't reasons to stop experimenting. They are questions we need to address if we want people to trust what we create. One of the things Im increasingly interested in is what comes after efficiency. Rather than only asking “How can AI make filmmaking faster or cheaper?, what happens when we ask: What can we now create that simply wasnt possible before? New forms of storytelling. New audiences. New creative businesses. New collaborations. And potentially entirely new business models. With India and other Asian creative economies moving rapidly in this space, there is also a huge opportunity for the UK to collaborate, learn and build relationships rather than view this purely through a domestic lens. Thank you to the Manchester Indian Film Festival, Leo and everyone involved for inviting me into such a thoughtful conversation and to my fellow panellists and the audience for the debate. Lots to think about. And, importantly, lots still to experiment with. It’s another example of an exceptional Manchester business building globally valuable technology and attracting a significant listed buyer. We made our first investment into PEAK:AIO just over a year ago through the British Business Bank’s Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II (NPIF II) and since then they've gone from strength to strength. It's a fantastic result for the management team and all those involved. We're excited to see what's next for the team. ❤️ I’m delighted to see our TIN Ventures ‘Inclusive Innovation Catalyst’ collaboration spotlighted in Tech Funding News today — and with good reason. This new venture studio is not just ambitious in scale (unlocking £30 million in co-investment, backing 50+ startups, and targeting £40 million+ in portco revenues within three years). 👉🏽 It’s purposeful: designed to address one of the UKs most persistent innovation challenges — who gets to access capital, and under what terms. 🔍 Why this matters — and why now: ⭐️ The West Midlands has lagged national averages in growth over recent years (region growing ~1.3 % annually vs UK ~2.1 % over the last three years). ⭐️ Its average salary remains below the UK mean, unemployment is elevated, and many of its districts struggle with productivity below national norms. ⭐️ Meanwhile, the region’s companies are showing appetite: smaller businesses here are more open to external finance than those elsewhere in the UK, with loan and overdraft facility growth among the highest in 2024. ⭐️ Access to equity and venture capital remains a structural hurdle: nationally, only ~15 % of VC and private equity goes to firms outside London/South East — despite those regions hosting roughly half of all SMEs. ⭐️ Disparities in pay and opportunity persist locally: race pay gaps of ~9.5 %, disability pay gaps ~17.7 %, and a gender pay gap ~12 % in the West Midlands. 👉🏽 In short: the region has enormous latent potential. What’s missing is embedded, equity-sensitive infrastructure that connects capital, capability, and community. That’s why the Inclusive Innovation Catalyst ‘Venture Studio’ (aligned to the The Venture Studio Forum #VSI) is so vital. Backed by Future Planet Capital Regional (which manages the West Midlands Combined Authority Co-Investment Fund), and co-designed with The 51% Club, and integrating the Greater Things prototype model - this is a coalition built to move systems, not just businesses. I’m super proud to be part of leading this timely agenda. Because bridging aspiration and opportunity means more than incremental growth - it means rewriting the rules so that diverse founders and underserved communities no longer remain on the edge, but become central beneficiaries. #InclusiveInnovation #LevellingUp #RegionalGrowth #VentureCapital #CivicUnibersities #DiversityInTech Mel Selvon Ellyard Hana Hussain Phoebe Kay Asher Craig Professor Mark Durkin Chaitali Patel Dr. Aqueel Wahga Fidele Mutwarasibo PhD Sarah Hayes Rupert Lyle Tara Attfield-Tomes Cliff Dennett Cornerstone VC Matthew Burris JT Benton ⸻

The market for ambient voice technology in the UK has been described as "the wild west" by NHS England. From our report on its response to this fear today, it is clear the centre wants to 'manage' the market by (effectively) preventing many of the (mostly smaller) players getting NHS business.
