Meijer extends teacher discount to meet classroom supplies demands
Meijer announced Thursday it plans to extend its 15% discount on classroom essentials for teachers. With students back in the classroom, teachers spent more money than ever on supplies. Traverse City Area Public Schools prepares to welcome students back to the classroom

Traverse City Area Public Schools has been doing virtual learning since September 8. On Monday, the school board voted to allow in-person learning starting on September 21. Traverse City Area Public Schools board votes to return to face-to-face learning
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- Northern Michigan’s largest school district decided to follow the superintendent's recommendation of returning to in-person learning starting September 21st. Traverse City Area Public Schools has been doing virtual learning since the first day of school on September 8th. More than 1,700 people tuned in to the TCAPS board meeting livestream Monday night to find out of students would be heading back to the classroom.

Charlevoix organization hands out backpacks filled with supplies to students
CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, Mich. , (WPBN/WGTU) -- More than 100 students will be receiving a free backpack filled with school supplies ahead of the new school year. Safe Haven, which is a ministry of the Community Reformed Church in Charlevoix, organized the fundraiser. For about a month and a half, they collected donations of school supplies to fill up to 150 backpacks. Caption: WPBN. Harbor Springs Public Schools bring in new equipment to fight COVID-19
EMMET COUNTY, Mich. , (WPBN/WGTU) -- Harbor Springs Public Schools is introducing new equipment this school year they say will help clean the air inside the schools. The manufacturer of the air ionization equipment, Global Plasma Solutions, said it removes pathogens and reduces the effectiveness of viruses. School administrators said it will be installed on every air handler in the district by September 15. It cost just over $136,000 and was paid for through a sinking fund millage.

Kingsley Area Schools welcomes back students for new school year

The district is one of the first ones in the area to welcome back students after closing early last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Every Michigan school district in the state had to come up with a Return to School plan and post it on their website.

Northwestern Michigan College begins fall classes both in person and virtually

This is the first time students were back on campus since the Covid-19 pandemic began, but things are different. this year. For example, masks are required to enter any building on campus. Northern Michigan parents weigh virtual or in-person options for upcoming school year
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Mich. , (WPBN/WGTU) -- Some students in northern Michigan got a closer look at what to expect as they head back to school in the fall. Marion Public Schools help open houses for all grade levels Wednesday. Students and parents were able to meet with teachers and ask questions about what in-person learning will look like. That includes all staff and students, grades 6 through 12, wearing masks at all times and canceling after school activities.

Leland School moves to virtual learning for beginning of 2020-2021 school year

Northern Michigan School Districts prepare to respond to positive COVID-19 cases
NORTHERN MICHIGAN (WPBN/WGTU) -- Northern Michigan schools will be keeping an eye on those numbers as we inch closer to the start of classes. And now, questions as to what districts will do when and if students test positive for COVID-19. This week, Public Schools of Petoskey Superintendent Chris Parker sent a letter to families, announcing the first known COVID-19 positive case in the district. TCAPS to begin school virtually for first two weeks
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. , (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education approved a plan to begin the school year virtually on September 8, and continue online for the first two weeks of school. According to TCAPS, the hope is that the initial two weeks of online schooling will allow students to learn classroom procedures and practice using online learning tools in case a classroom, school or the entire district is required to move to a fully virtual format.

Public safety courses offered to Pellston students in 2020-2021 school year

State education leaders discuss returning to school in fall
MICHIGAN (WPBN/WGTU) -- As of right now, any Michigan school within phase four of the Mi Safe Start Plan can welcome kids back to school in the fall. There are some safety measures in place, such as social distancing and masks required for kids and staff, but the state board of education and other community leaders want more. Former Flint Mayor Karen Weaver is one of the speakers who shared her concerns about Michigan schools reopening too quickly.
