Warm, the evening was perfectly lovely, the sun being bright and warm. Mrs Akroyd to tea. Enjoyed playing my violin to-day. Walk along Coombe Lane and to Common Extension. The gardens in the Copse Hill district are superb - the roses especially.

Saturday 28th June 1941: shelter paint

Warm, cloudy, slight shower at night. Did the shopping in afternoon without going to Wimbledon. In evening to Uncle Henry's to fit new high-tension battery but found the battery defective. Alb and Lily called in evening to get the special shelter paint I bought during the afternoon.

Friday 27th June 1941: late Winifred's house

1.10 to 2.13 a.m. a few machines and distant gunfire.
27 Fri. (con.) warm, but mostly cloudy but some modest sun. To do shopping morning and afternoon man came to put another fancy glass pane in front door. Mrs.Hill did some house cleaning, Short cycle ride in evening to see the lovely house where Winifred Bishop - God Bless Her, used to live.

Thursday 26th June 1941: mint from Liza

Warm, fine, but not so much sun to-day. Bought some goods in Wimbledon, walking there and back along the rail path. Planted mint root given me by Aunt Liza.

Wednesday 25th June 1941: roses & bomb damage

Very warm, brilliant sunshine all day; perfect. To buy provisions in morning. In afternoon cycled to Worcester Park and Old Malden; saw considerable bomb damage there. The country is lovely and the roses in Motspur Park superb. Gave Doris Parr some roses.

Tuesday 24th June 1941: model aircraft

Warm, fine, but less sun than of late. To Wimbledon along line* to do shopping. Flew 37 ins model on Common in evening with splendid results, finishing with a long flight taking off from the ground.**

Notes: * Fred was referring to the path alongside the railway. **The tissue-covered, balsa-wood, model aircraft was powered by strands of strong elastic bound together at the ends and wound many times before each flight with a hand-drill. The aircraft would, ideally, circle slowly, being brought around by the ground-adjusted rudder. Fred kept his aircraft at home with the wheels hooked over a picture rail, the aircraft hanging on the wall pointing vertically to the ceiling.
