Chronology of events affecting the football program at Southern Methodist University since 1981:
June 1981-NCAA places SMU's football program on two years' probation for 29 recruiting violations. The probation includes a one-year ban on network television appearances and bowl games and forfeiture of its share of money from televised Southwest Conference games.
December 1981-SMU wins the Southwest Conference football championship but is unable to represent the conference in the Cotton Bowl because of its NCAA probation.
