Dashwood Sisters Inspire Sarah Flint ‘Sense and Sensibility’ Collaboration

Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles star in the upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel.

It’s time to step into Georgian England, quite literally.

Footwear brand Sarah Flint launched a capsule collection on Wednesday in partnership with the upcoming Focus Features film “Sense and Sensibility,” adapted from the famous Jane Austen novel.

Flint, the eponymous designer and longtime fan of Auston’s 1811 novel, explores the tension between restraint and passion through the collection spanning shoes and scarves. The designs draw inspiration from the unique personalities of the Dashwood sisters, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles in the film directed by Georgia Oakley.

The capsule pairs two of Sarah Flint’s signature silhouettes with the sisters to reflect their contrasting personalities. The Emma style, a more composed and sensible block-heel pump, is for Elinor (Edgar-Jones).

The Natalie ballet flat, a more romantic and free silhouette adorned with an asymmetric bow, is assigned to Marianne (Creed-Miles). The two styles are both hand-embroidered with a Japanese anemone floral on linen, recalling the needlework and textile traditions of the Georgian era. The Perfect Emma pump and the Natalie flat are both priced at $595 and can be shopped at sarahflint.com.

“Anemones are one of the classic English garden flowers, and in the old language of flowers,
they mean anticipation,” said Flint in a statement. “We hand-embroidered it onto linen, the same slow, careful way women of that era would have worked, one stitch at a time, because printing it would
have missed the point.”

The collection also features two hand-painted scarves: the Anemones Scarf, painted by Flint herself and the Dashwood scarf named after the novel’s starring family and hand-painted by longtime collaborator Katarzyna Strozynska-Goraj. Throughout the capsule, motifs pull from embroidery and textile patterns of the period and the color palette is directly inspired by the aesthetics of the film.

“I’ve wanted to do something with this book for years, so when this collaboration came together,
it felt like the equivalent of a superfan getting asked to plan a reunion tour,” Flint continued. “I
didn’t want a shoe with a movie logo slapped on it. I spent real time on where Elinor ends and
Marianne begins, down to which thread color went on which shoe.”

Set for theatrical release in the U.S. on Oct. 16, “Sense and Sensibility” follows the Dashwood sisters as they navigate the loss of their family fortune, love, heartbreak and societal expectations in Georgian England. While Oakley directed, Diana Reid penned the script.

The press tour for the film has brought about a slew of high-fashion looks from its stars, including Edgar-Jones in $50,000 worth of Boucheron jewels or a Champagne silk duchesse Vivienne Westwood dress.
