My wife uses Waze, and it's the last mapping app I would advise anyone to switch to. She's used to it, so she doesn't want to swtich, but every time she complains about some quirk, I alwys tell her she should just switch to Google Maps.
I use Google Maps on my phone, and I don't see any of the stuff you are complaining about. That might be because 90% of my use is launching it by sending an address and then it's just one tap to start routing.
