When celebrated writer Joan Didion’s life was altered forever, she wrote a new chapter. In this adaptation of her iconic memoir, Didion transforms the story of the shattering loss of her husband and their daughter into a one-woman play performed by Tony Award winner Vanessa Redgrave, who originated the role on Broadway in 2007. Written with Didion’s trademark style of cool observation, The Year of Magical Thinking weaves back and forth in time, taking listeners on a poignant journey through heartbreak, grief, and resilience. It’s an unforgettable theatrical experience that resonates with anyone who has ever loved.

I really wanted to like this, but the way Vanessa Redgrave portrays Joan Didion was distracting. The accent, the feeble sound of her voice, just didn’t feel like Joan Didion to me. However, it’s a beautifully written script.

Performance ruined it for me

dear audible producers. keep silent at the end of books like this please. it is like the play ends and you don't let us sit with it for a minute. you must turn on the lights and make announcements about how to exit the theatre before the curtain has even closed. think about it.

nicely done.

There is no way to listen to this and not experience some of the emotional pain that the writer experienced. As a parent I was extremely moved as she wrote about her daughter. I have deep respect for her ability to put into words some of her feelings, thoughts and experience. Extremely well written, and emotionally read. Have the tissues ready.

Gut wrenching, Wonderfully written.

So Emotionally Touching

Very sad, but I imagine it could be comforting for those who have been through such things. I found the narrator's elderly, cracking voice comforting, but the audio was quiet. I had it on max volume and still had trouble hearing it on some parts. 4 stars because I found the ending to be abrupt and unexpected.

This was such a great story. Ms. Redgrave was the perfect person to read it. Couldn't help but tear up, as it was so true to our lives in some parts. I miss our daughter, as well as her baby girl. Í do miss my folks also.

Magical, Of Course
