Construction of the Tobin Montessori and Darby Vassall Upper School Building

The Capital Building Projects (CBP) Department manages planning, design, construction, and maintenance projects to support the City's portfolio of municipal and school buildings.

Working closely with other City departments, design teams, and contractors, CBP ensures that projects align with the City’s strategic goals while delivering high-performing facilities for staff, occupants, the community, and the environment. The department oversees a wide range of projects across Cambridge’s municipal building portfolio, including schools, Public Works facilities, youth centers, branch libraries, fire stations, and City offices.

Our work promotes energy efficiency, emissions reduction, resilience, historic preservation, safety, and accessibility, all while supporting the City’s strategic priorities and initiatives. We strive to ensure that Cambridge’s municipal buildings remain functional, sustainable, and welcoming for all.

What is the Municipal Facilities Improvement Plan?

The goal of the Municipal Facilities Improvement Plan (MFIP) is to provide and maintain high-performing City-owned facilities for staff, occupants, the public, and the broader environment. Projects include, but are not limited to, upgrades of Public Works facilities, youth centers, branch libraries, fire stations, and City offices. Improvements also include upgrades to systems like HVAC and electrical, which will help the City meet the energy use and emissions targets associated with the Net Zero Action Plan, Building Energy Use Disclosure Ordinance (BEUDO), Fossil Fuel Free Demonstration, and other City initiatives and regulations.

What is the structure of this department?

Established in FY24, the Capital Building Projects Department consists of four core area of work: Design, Construction, Maintenance, and Administration. Together, these teams manage design, construction, and capital planning projects in the City buildings from start to finish, and beyond.

Prior to the formation of this department, major capital projects were overseen by the City Manager’s Office. Other design and construction projects were managed by the Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Cambridge Public School Department (CPSD).

Because of this history, and the complexity of many of our projects, CBP engages in lots of cross-departmental work with other City groups. In addition to the City Manager, DPW, and CPSD, CBP often works alongside Community Development, Finance, Purchasing, Law, Transportation, Inspectional Services, Equity & Inclusion, and the Office of Sustainability, to name a few.
