How to use Getty Images’ AI modification features:
- On a creative image details page, describe the changes you’d like to make in the prompt bar and press Modify.
- Purchase generations if you don’t have any available.
- To make additional edits, select Add or remove objects, Replace background, or Extend image.
- To Add or remove objects, use the prompt to describe the change you want to see. Use the Brush or Click features for even more control.
- To use Replace background, choose Text prompt and describe the new background, or select Color using the options to pick a solid hue or gradient.
- To Extend an image, select a new aspect ratio or adjust the image manually with Freeform and add an optional text prompt.
- To remove the background of a creative image, simply click the Remove background button and AI does the rest.
- License and download the original and modified images. Modified images are available in Standard, Higher resolution (4K), or Enhanced detail versions, and include Getty Images standard legal indemnification per image.

Not at this time. Currently, our model allows for photo & illustration modifications only.
Which images can I modify with Generative AI by Getty Images?
You can modify the images you create using Getty Images’ AI Generator as well as the vast majority of our creative images using the Add, Remove, Extend, and Remove Background tools.
Can I upload my own images to modify with Generative AI by Getty Images?
No, you can use Generative AI by Getty Images only to modify the images you create using Getty Images’ AI Image Generator and to modify images from our creative library using the Add, Remove, Extend, Remove Background, and prompt‑based editing tools.
Can I modify an image before licensing it?
Yes, you can use your generations to modify images from our creative library using the Add, Remove, Extend, Remove Background, and prompt‑based editing tools before licensing them. As a reminder, to license an AI‑modified creative image, you will need to purchase a license (visit our Plans and Pricing page to learn more). Please be mindful that any modifications will count towards your generation's cap, even if you decide not to license the modified creative image afterward. Additionally, Getty Images does not offer customers refunds for generations used, as set forth in your agreement.
Will images that I modified with AI be offered as part of Getty Images’ creative library?
No, unlike some other services, we are not adding visuals you modify or generate to our creative library.
How are these AI image modifications made?
Generative AI by Getty Images is powered by Bria, a custom machine learning model, trained exclusively on licensed creative content and proprietary data, including from our creative library. Customers then use text prompt‑to‑image and our modification tools to direct the model in creating imagery based on our content and data.
Can I modify images that I’ve already licensed in the past and are available in my account to download?
Yes, you may modify previously licensed images. Click the “Modify with AI” button when viewing the details page of a previously licensed image. After making modifications, you’ll be able to download the modified image, which may require additional licensing if you are re‑licensing the image after expiration of the term of your agreement.
How can I tell which images in the Getty Images creative library are available to modify?
Creative images that can be modified with Generative AI will include the “Modify with AI” button above the image thumbnail. If this button is unavailable on the image, such as our Editorial content, we do not offer the option to modify the image using Generative AI.
Do I have to select Remove background before Add, Remove, and Extend?
No, you can only use the Remove background feature after you have modified your image with Add, Remove, Extend, or prompt‑based editing feature. Each modification uses one generation from your agreement.
Why do I need to restore the background to use other AI modification features?
To provide you with the highest‑quality AI modifications, the image must be in JPEG format, and this format requires the presence of the background. We suggest you complete all other AI modifications before you decide to remove the background.
Do I need to pay to modify and download a creative image?
Yes, to license our creative images, you will need to purchase a license. To find the best plan with the right price for your needs, visit our Plans and Pricing page. Additionally, to modify our creative images using the modification tools, you will need to purchase AI generations. Visit our Generative AI Overview & Pricing page to purchase the generation plan that fits your needs. What is the legal protection for my modified image?
Licensing visuals from the Getty Images creative library grants you a license backed by our legal indemnification as set forth in your applicable license agreement. If you are licensing without a subscription plan from the website, then this is backed by Getty Images’ uncapped indemnification. However, keep in mind that modifying your image may affect the indemnification offered by Getty Images. Please refer to our Content License Agreement and discuss any concerns you may have with your legal team.
When licensing, can I download the original and the modified versions of the image?
Yes, when making modifications, you can download both the original, licensed image and the modified version. You’ll find the modified version of the image in your Generation history, and the licensed original in Download history.
