In 2014 Raj Dutt, Anthony Woods, and Torkel Ödegaard founded Grafana Labs to build a sustainable business around the Grafana open source project.
How Grafana Labs started
It all started with the open source project, Grafana, when Torkel Ödegaard made his first commit in December 2013. He then went on a 14-day commit streak on GitHub and never looked back. Today, there are roughly 19 internal teams at Grafana Labs that focus on improving and innovating around Grafana, not to mention almost 2,000 contributors to the project. And Torkel has remained active alongside them.

We know that data has incredible power to solve complex problems, transform business, drive innovation, and ultimately make the world a better place. The unfortunate reality is that the data we need often lives all over the place in disparate systems across geos, platforms, servers, and more. It’s our mission as Grafanistas to unite data, no matter where it lives, and empower our users to analyze, take action, and make smart decisions.
