About us

The Children's Storefront is a first-of-its-kind, free playspace in Harlem that helps caregivers learn how to build their child's brain and support their healthy development. _______________________ The research is clear: back-and-forth interactions between caregivers and children in the first three years of life build the strongest foundation for brain growth and lifelong success, and responsive play is the best tool we have to build babies’ brains. Yet this research often doesn’t reach the parents who could use this information to support their children’s growth and healthy development. The Children's Storefront has partnered with families in Harlem for over fifty years, and is laser-focused on bringing the power of interactive play to families. Our playspace model allows parents and children to learn together, with caregivers practicing the skills that spur brain development while receiving immediate feedback and support from early childhood specialists. Our program has a lasting impact on children, families, and communities. After only a few sessions, the bond between caregiver and child is strengthened and a healthy attachment is encouraged. Long-term, children who participate will have stronger language development, improved mental and physical health outcomes, better self-regulation, and greater success in school. Communities are transformed as the root cause of later-in-life issues such as homelessness, poverty, and substance use is addressed. Just as The Children’s Storefront was on the cutting edge of tuition-free private education Harlem for decades, our commitment to the science of early childhood brain building places us at the forefront of the next revolution in childhood development.

Costume Character Cookie Monster paid a surprise visit to kids at The Children's Storefront, an early childhood education center in Harlem, as they were learning to make nutritious and delicious snacks in a day hosted by #NYP’s CHALK program (Choosing Healthy and Active Lifestyles for Kids). Registered dietitian Robyn Turetsky, of #NYP’s division of Community and Population Health, led children and caregivers through a hands-on, cookie-making demonstration that incorporated healthy ingredients, like Greek yogurt and fresh berries.     Along with Sesame Street and local community organizations, NewYork-Presbyterian is expanding access to health education, providing families with the tools to build healthier lifestyles. Click here to learn how we’re working to bring health education to youth in the communities we serve: https://nyphosp.co/3KM55fg.    Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine

Executive Director | The Children's Storefront

These are a few of my favorite moments from The Children's Storefront's Benefit last night. What. A. Night. The event was a celebration of many things, one being our partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital's CHALK (Choosing Healthy & Active Lifestyles for Kids) team, but it was also my formal introduction to our community as the organization's new Executive Director. In my remarks, I shared some reflections from my first few weeks in my new gig: "When families visit The Children's Storefront, they see milestones for both children and parents: the ones we all know to look out for, like crawling, talking, and walking. But they also learn to spot other milestones they might not have known to look for. And that’s the magic of our program - it makes the science of brain development accessible and actionable to those best positioned to make an impact on the life of a child in their first three years, their parents and caregivers." (If I've piqued your interest, you can learn more here. --> https://lnkd.in/eZGZCuXf) And while that's what happens in our Play & Learn Center every day, the magic that was on display last night was our community: coaches, staff, board members, Storefront parents, supporters, and partners all coming together to support an organization, a place, and a community they genuinely love and value. Thanks to all who were there, all who supported, and all who have and will join us on our path to serving more families in more places with the magic of The Children's Storefront. PS - My favorite photo might be Board Member Christopher Turner, MRICS, posing with our bursting-at-the-seams sponsor list. • Dear Parents, Caregivers, Supporters, and Community Members: When our former Executive Director Adeline Medeiros departed in March, she left a legacy that can be seen and felt at The Children’s Storefront: a vibrant home on Fifth Avenue, a unified and talented team, an abundance of engaged families, and an organization with a solid foundation, ready to rise to a new level of service and impact. Over the last few months, we searched for a leader committed to our mission—coaching parents and caregivers on how to build their babies’ brains in the first thousand days of life—who also brings the skills and drive to guide our next chapter. We are pleased to announce that we have found such a leader. Please welcome our new Executive Director, Lindsey Cosgrove. Lindsey, a proud resident of Harlem for the last 15 years, is a versatile nonprofit leader driven by a passion for strengthening organizations that support young people and their families, and improve the systems that shape their lives. Lindsey puts it best: “Having worked with organizations that serve New Yorkers of all ages, I know there is no greater influence on an experience than how it starts. The beginning of things is exceedingly important, and The Children’s Storefront helps parents gain the tools to give their children the best possible start in life. I’ve spent my career working to expand nonprofit organizations I believe in, and to be at the helm of this one, alongside a committed board and exceptional staff, is an honor and a joy.” We hope you’ll join us on June 4 for A Night Out for The Children’s Storefront to celebrate our supporters and welcome Lindsey to the team! • It is with a mix of gratitude and sadness that we announce the departure of Adeline Medeiros, our Executive Director, who has been an integral part of The Children’s Storefront for the past three years. During her time with us, Adeline has shown unmatched dedication and passion in supporting the mission of our organization. Her leadership has been instrumental in driving forward initiatives that have impacted the lives of countless children and families in our community. Adeline’s commitment to creating positive change, her leadership, and her heartfelt belief in the power of community have left an indelible mark on The Children’s Storefront. Her collaborative spirit and deep connection with our staff, board, and families have been a constant source of inspiration, and her vision for the future of the organization will continue to guide us as we move forward. We are incredibly grateful for the time and energy Adeline has devoted to our mission. Her legacy will be remembered in the growth and success of The Children’s Storefront. We wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors. From our Board Members: "It was a great day for our program when Adeline agreed to be our Executive Director.  It’s been wonderful to have a fellow dreamer who shares our enthusiasm for exploring new possibilities, while keeping a firm sense of what is achievable for a start-up in its early years. She’s created a vibrant team, and built a strong reputation among parents, caregivers, children, as well as supporters and partners. If they could talk, I’m sure that even -- no especially -- our babies would agree!" -Elsie V. Aidinoff, Vice Chair "It has been my sincere pleasure and great fortune to have worked with Adeline. Under her skilled and knowledgeable direction, our program advanced in invaluable ways. Her dedication, direction, passion and commitment have served as a strong foundation upon which we can build a brighter future. I wish her all the best and that the kindness she has shown to others be returned to her. She will be missed by many, especially me." - Christine Moore, Board Secretary "In addition to her dedication and many skills, Adeline led the Storefront with tremendous enthusiasm and excitement for the organization, its history, the staff and the program. Adeline will always be a friend of the Storefront and her many contributions will continue to serve the Storefront community long into the future. We wish her the best in her next adventure." -Chris Moore, Vice Chair

  • Last week, we were excited to welcome French-American Aid for Children to our Play & Learn Center! We had a wonderful conversation among the FAAFC members, our team, and our Storefront Ambassadors about the power of our program and the importance of investing in early childhood. We are so grateful for each opportunity we have to celebrate and share our work!

🌟 SITE VISIT: The Children’s Storefront On February 19th, some of our members had the opportunity to discover firsthand the incredible work of The Children's Storefront in Harlem. This organization’s dedication to early childhood development is truly inspiring. Studies show that the first three years of life are critical for brain development, laying the foundation for long-term health and learning. Children who receive strong early support are more likely to excel academically, build confidence, and develop the resilience needed to navigate challenges. Additionally, fostering a sense of community strengthens families, creates support networks, and promotes equity, ensuring that every child—regardless of background—has the opportunity to thrive. From interactive learning spaces to passionate educators, it was wonderful to see how The Children's Storefront is creating a nurturing environment where children can grow, explore, and build critical skills during their formative years. Thank you to the CS team for their warm welcome! #investinchildren #childrencomefirst #earlychildhoodeducation
