Alex Pattison liked thisAlex Pattison liked thisSaturday night my car was broken into and they took one valuable thing, my passport in a leather Tumi case. Then yesterday morning I got a cryptic message from someone saying they had my passport.. They said they had found it on the ground and sent an apartment address at a an old apartment complex for me to pick it up. So I drove over. (Yeah, the situation seemed a little sketchy, but apparently with covid it takes forever to get a new passport and I didn’t want to have to wait until next May to travel again.) I drive up to the address and the door was open. He was a construction worker laying carpet in an old run down apartment. He smiled and pointed out where he found it and gave me my passport *still in the Tumi case* with everything still inside. He was just a kind, honest guy who found my passport and went through the effort to track me down and help me get it back. I went through my wallet to give him whatever cash I had to say thanks and he just rolled his eyes, threw down his hand and said in his broken English “go give it to a poor person,” then walked back inside. And I don’t know... with so much bad/cynical news, his kindness just made me really happy so I wanted to share. Huge shoutout to good people.

There are currently 11 employees, 5 of which are Engineers, with plans to nearly triple in size (hiring 9 Engineers alone). And the most urgent role is this 1st Operations Engineer hire. The Operations Engineer needs to have Kubernetes experience because they already have K8s in production and want someone whose implement K8s before to help them avoid mistakes and build/scale it right the first time. Would love someone to take charge of the largely greenfield ops environment. You'll have a significant impact and ability to determine the future tech direction of the company. Alex Pattison liked thisAlex Pattison liked thisReflecting on a web-server project for an Internet applications course at SFSU, I find myself looking at Clean Code. Going back through the process at every stage, I see that my team was actively working with organization and hospitality of code in mind; it was meant to be read, understood and improved upon by other humans. We were writing with intention, not just a drive to complete the task. After reviewing the project post-submission, you could physically see the intent that went into almost every line. What struck me was how much the lines without the same level of care stuck out; in the past, I was able to distinguish between programs I enjoyed reading and ones that I did not. I never could pinpoint why. Clean programming is like good audio work in the movies, if you don't notice it, it is probably very good. You can tell that the producers took the care and forethought to match every background sound, the right refrigerator hum, the right kind of static for the room etc. It is fluid, coherent and flows logically from one thing to the next. It just "works". Going forward, this is something I really want to pay more attention to. Especially how and when the deviations from the formula happen.

We just released SkillsBench: Benchmarking How Well Agent Skills Work Across Diverse Tasks led by Xiangyi Li and I’m excited to be a co-author. The team saw so many agent skills being published, reused, and hyped, and just had to ask - are they actually useful? So we created a full blown benchmark! Key takeaways 1️⃣ Curated skills significantly improve performance Across 86 real-world tasks and multiple agent setups, well-designed human-written skills by subject matter experts delivered meaningful gains. 2️⃣ Skill design matters more than size. Focused, modular skills (2–3 clear components) outperform bloated documentation. 3️⃣ Impact varies by domain Skills aren’t magic. In some domains they help a lot. In others, marginally. Benchmarking is the only way to know. 4️⃣ Skills outperformed model scaling Smaller models with skills outperformed bigger models without them, both in terms of token use and correctness My personal takeaway Software is so saturated that it was genuinely hard to find tasks where strong frontier models clearly fail, but other fields such as healthcare, finance and cybersecurity are still lagging behind. Having said that, when skills are well-designed, they matter. For example, Vercel's react-best-practices skill was extremely practical - it directly helped solve real performance & layout issues in a webapp scenario where baseline models struggled. If skills are going to be the next packages for agents, we need proper benchmarks. No more vibes!

We don't see it often enough, but the start-ups I've worked with who hired *very* senior software developers - often semi-retired folks - part-time got enormous benefits. Most start-ups can't afford to pay for a full-time distinguished engineer, but giving dev teams a chance to be influenced by them even just one or two days a week can really raise the ceiling on what teams realise is possible and where their bar is set.
