𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗬𝗲𝘁 SCENE: Two seasoned product leaders, Meera and Rajiv, sit at a quiet corner of a conference hall after a long day of panels. Coffee in hand, jackets slightly undone, they begin an unscripted debate. RAJIV (half-smiling): I heard someone say today - “Creativity in PM leads to gains beyond the incremental.” Sounds nice enough for applause. But in practice? It feels like a poster, not a roadmap. MEERA (raising an eyebrow): You really believe that? That creativity doesn’t move the needle? That PM is just execution, discipline, and distribution? RAJIV (shrugging): Not exactly. Creativity matters. But it’s overrated. In twenty years, I’ve seen more disasters from “creative leaps” than successes. Creativity eats cash and morale far quicker than it produces outcomes. MEERA (leaning forward): And in my twenty years, I’ve seen the opposite. Execution gives you survival. Creativity - when fused with execution - bends markets. Without creativity, PMs are traffic cops. With it, they create leaps. RAJIV (chuckling): Markets don’t bend that easily. For every Slack, there’s a HipChat. For every Tesla, a Fisker. Creativity is high variance. The rare hits look like genius. The common misses look like hubris. MEERA: Variance, yes. But that’s the point. Slack, Notion, Tesla - they weren’t just creative products. They reframed the problem. They created new lenses. That kind of creativity doesn’t give you 1% gains. It gives you 10x. RAJIV (serious now): But most “creative” ideas? They fail because the market isn’t ready. Google Glass was creative. Dead in two years. MEERA: Or maybe Glass failed because the go-to-market wasn’t creative. Creativity isn’t just product. It’s also in how you test, ship, narrate. Execution without reframing will keep you alive. Reframing with discipline creates leaps. RAJIV (pausing): So maybe it’s not creativity versus execution. It’s creativity to expand the option space. Execution to narrow it. Both are necessary. The art lies in knowing when to let each lead. MEERA (pointing her finger, almost playfully): And that’s where I’ll disagree. Because discipline alone creates survivability. Creativity - when wielded with discipline - creates category leadership. The best PMs don’t just optimize funnels. They imagine funnels that don’t exist yet. RAJIV (after a long pause, sighing with a grin): Fine, let’s call it: creativity without discipline is chaos. Discipline without creativity is stagnation. The multiplier is in the fusion. MEERA (raising her cup): Exactly. Incremental gains are survival. Creative leaps - if disciplined - are how you bend markets. RAJIV (clinking his cup to hers, smirking): Fine. You win the philosophy. But in hiring? I’ll still test for execution first. Creativity is only valuable if it rides on rigor. MEERA (grinning): And I’ll still test for imagination first. Execution can be taught. Vision rarely can.

What happens when a company runs a 5-day AI hackathon with the goal of making the entire org move 10x faster? This week Gaurav Hardikar (VP Product & Growth at HomeLight) joined us on the Supra Insider podcast and shared an awesome story about his team's 5-day AI hackathon. But before we get there, I want to call out that 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝘅 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, including: 🚀 AI voice agents that qualify hundreds of thousands of buyers and sellers every month 🚀 AI to analyze agent–client calls and coach real estate agents ^ These were product investments driving real customer value. Okay, so back to the hackathon... After months spent shipping exciting new AI features outside the usual process, the team would return to the slow old way of working and it all just felt... slow. Gaurav and the team decided to shift from “how can AI supercharge our product?” to “how can AI transform the way we work?” They organized a 5-day EPD hackathon, flying dozens of people to the Bay Area to tackle one question: “𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘶𝘱 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺, 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘰��𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴 10𝘹 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳?” This was a hackathon to rethink the operating system of the company in an AI-native way: ↳ They aimed straight at the friction points. Tech debt, product debt, their design system, analytics, scoping. The unglamorous surfaces that quietly slow every future project down. ↳ They forced fresh thinking. Engineers and designers were assigned to unfamiliar areas. PMs were intentionally scarce to avoid anchoring on old assumptions. ↳ And “done” meant production. Within roughly six weeks, about half the projects were live or nearly ready to ship. The hackathon helped the team build trust with new tools, gave them permission to challenge old assumptions, and created shared muscle memory for a faster way of working. HomeLight treated the hackathon as a chance to explore an operating system upgrade and listening to Gaurav gave me a preview of where AI-native companies are heading: ❌ They’re not asking “where can we add AI?” ✅ They’re asking “how does AI change everything about how we work?” If you want to start moving your team to working in an AI-native way, this conversation is for you. Day 1: NeurIPS Met up with the incredible Jigar Doshi. He is one of the few using AI not for profit or hype, but to tackle poverty in India. Here are some remarkable initiatives he has led: 1. Copilot for Front Line Workers: LLM-powered co-pilot into an existing learning and support application to improve the training of auxiliary nurses and midwives in India so they can better manage high-risk pregnancies (in native languages). One woman dies in childbirth every twenty minutes in India. Many maternal and infant deaths could be prevented by improving access to critical care information and ensuring that health workers can detect risk factors and treat complications early on. 2. CottonAce app: Wadhwani AI’s initiative to help cotton farmers fight pest infestations. It is easily accessible, works offline and is available in nine languages. Farmers install pheromone traps amongst their crops, which trap pests. They then upload images of the pests to the app and the AI algorithm identifies the pest and calculates how severe the infestation is. CottonAce generates instantaneous recommendations on which pesticide to use and how to best apply it. OpenAI is reportedly in talks for a $500B valuation (via an employee share sale) - which would make it the most valuable private company in the world. For context: the combined market cap of India’s top 3 listed companies (Reliance, HDFC Bank, TCS) is ~$540B. 🤯 Private markets are doing the price discovery that used to happen at IPOs, with employee and early-investor secondaries setting mega-cap prices while crossover and sovereign money bring public-grade expectations; at a $500B private mark, going public feels optional because the “public” price is already being set in private. Why? The 5-star user is already a happy evangelist, but their small, unaddressed need represents a ceiling on their loyalty. They are primed to leave the moment a competitor fulfills that exact, niche requirement. The "Subscription Surrender" Trauma (Churn): The top reason for outright churn isn't product quality; it's the "auto-renewal notification" that feels like an ambush. Our data shows customers who complain that the notification arrived less than 48 hours before the payment date are 7x more likely to delete the app instantly. They feel trapped and exploited, turning a routine transaction into a feeling of betrayal that is almost impossible for CS to reverse. The "So What" for Strategic Leaders These insights are your leading indicators for future LTV. They tell you where your product's design is creating emotional debt. While you fix bugs, your competitor is addressing the paranoia and the ambush you've created.
