Now that our recursive descent parser is successfully converting tokenized input into an AST (while ruthlessly enforcing operator precedence and grammar rules), it's time to breathe life into our interpreter with expression evaluation! What We're Building: A tree-walking evaluator that traverses our AST Proper handling of arithmetic, comparison, and logical operations Type checking and runtime error reporting (because invalid operations deserve consequences) Key Implementation Details: Visitor Pattern - Clean separation between syntax nodes and evaluation logic Dynamic Typing - Runtime type checking for operations (no free passes) Truthiness Rules - Because false, nil, and your bad code should all evaluate as falsey Error Recovery - Graceful handling of runtime errors without crashing The evaluator works as a depth-first traversal of our AST, where each node: Recursively evaluates its child nodes Applies its specific operation Returns a value (or throws hands when things go wrong) Fun Challenges Solved: The classic "Is 0 / 0 == 0 / 0?" IEEE 754 edge case String concatenation vs arithmetic addition ambiguity Now I'm sure many of you are wondering what a visitor pattern is how it works, lets break it down in simpler terms. Think of the Visitor Pattern like a pizza delivery person visiting houses: Houses (Syntax Nodes): Each house has an address (like NumberExpr, BinaryExpr) but doesn't know how to cook pizza (evaluate itself) Delivery Person (Visitor): Knows exactly what pizza (operation) to bring to each house type: Brings pepperoni to Number houses Brings cheese to BinaryOp houses Brings veggie to Grouping houses How it works: You tell the delivery person "start at house A" They check the house type Deliver the right pizza for that house Then visit the next house on the route Making sure `!` works on more than just my patience Next up: Variables and state management - where our interpreter graduates from calculator to actual programming language.
