Student Veterans of America is now accepting breakout session proposals for the 19th Annual NatCon, January 4-6, 2027, in Grapevine, TX. If you're a practitioner, researcher, industry leader, or changemaker with insight to share, we'd love to see your proposal! The strongest sessions come from people who bring practical knowledge and a real passion for empowering student veterans and military-connected students. Have expertise that would resonate with this community? Put it in front of them. This year, it'd be great to see some proposals for School Certifying Officials (SCOs), SVA Chapter Advisors, and Veteran Resource Center directors! Cory Boatwright reposted thisCory Boatwright reposted thisWhen you filled out your LinkedIn profile for the first time, do you remember what it felt like to try to name your skills? Most people freeze. They type something generic like "leadership," "communication," or "problem-solving" – all of which are essentially useless in distinguishing us from anyone else. It’s not because they don't have real skills, but because the things they're actually best at have become invisible to them. I call this the competence curse. What comes easily to us doesn't feel special, so we assume it isn't. We don't write it down, don't talk about it, don't think to highlight it in an interview. Which means the most valuable things you bring to the table are often the last things anyone sees. The fix isn't trying harder to describe yourself, but to get a new perspective. Friends and colleagues can be great at reflecting these things back to us, but it can feel awkward to ask someone else “hey, what am I really good at?” A good coach asks you questions you've never been asked before, forcing you to articulate what you do in ways you never had to. The problem is, they’re usually insanely expensive. That's what Proximo is built to do. Cory Boatwright reposted thisCory Boatwright reposted thisIt's easy to freeze in the middle of a big transition. There's so much uncertainty around you that you can't move. I know this intimately. It's something I've struggled with throughout my career. I'll catch myself chewing on all the possibilities, unsure which is the right path. Worried that if I go down one, I close off the others. Or that I'll commit, pour months into something, and realize too late that I got it wrong. But standing still has a cost too. It just hides better. It compounds quietly while you wait for a certainty that never arrives. It lets your thoughts eat you slowly, and you never find out what was behind the door you were staring at. Through a lot of trial and error, I learned that nearly everything in life is an experiment, not a decision. Every small step gives us data, if we look for it. A coach of mine once put it this way: "No matter what happens, I will approach this with gratitude for what it teaches me about myself and the world." So even one small action helps. Send the email. Book the catch-up call. Sign up for the meetup. Any of it pulls us out of the spiral and into an action-data-action cycle. You don't need the whole plan. You just need the next small step, and the willingness to learn from it. That's why we named our company Proximo, the Spanish word for "next." We'd all be better off putting less pressure on ourselves to "figure it out," and more on simply finding our next experiment. Building something is hard. Harder than I expected, honestly. Our team cares a lot about making this genuinely useful to people like us, and we need feedback to get there. And we need a student veteran to help us tell the story. You'll run our daily content, engage the community, and spotlight the student veteran success stories most people never hear. We're looking for a student veteran in college, active on social, with sharp writing instincts and wit. The gig is part-time, 10 to 20 hours a week, remote, flexible around classes, and $20 an hour. Cory Boatwright shared thisYesterday I had the honor of visiting Oregon State University to celebrate an incredible group of graduating student veterans, including Student Veterans of America's Student Veteran of the Year, Nikki Gold! Thank you, Nikki, for the invitation. It meant a great deal to be there! Congrats in all you've done and will continue to do for our community! Also, a huge thank you to William Elfering for taking such great care of the students and for everything you do on their behalf. You, the Holcomb Center for Military & Veteran Resources, and Oregon State University have built something truly special in Corvallis! The best part of the day was getting to sit with the graduates, hear their stories, and learn about what comes next for each of them. The talent is undeniable. I'm excited to see what you all do next! And thank you Melissa, for joining me in celebrating this remarkable group. It was a fun day only made better because I got to share it with you! At SVA, we're proud that OSU has such a strong chapter, and we're grateful we get to walk alongside these veterans in some small way on their journey to whatever comes next. From executives I've coached. In my heavier moments, I’ve said this to myself countless times throughout my career. Career misalignment is one of the most quietly distressing things a person can carry. You spend most of your waking life working, and when what you're doing doesn't fit who you are, you feel it. It eats at you. Even if you can't name it clearly. Most people don't act on it, but because they don't know where to start. They don't have a clear picture of what they're actually good at, where they'd thrive, or what a realistic path forward even looks like. So the inertia builds. Each step forward actually makes change feel harder. That’s why Kevin and I built Proximo (myproximo.ai). It’s easy to start. Cory Boatwright shared thisLast week I had the honor of speaking to a room full of School Certifying Officials (SCOs) at the @FAVES Regional Conference in Florida. SCOs do one of the most important jobs in this entire ecosystem. They are often the first person a veteran talks to when trying to connect to their VA benefits, and they are frequently the unsung heroes who make sure student veterans get connected to the resources they earned to complete their education. They are on the front lines of this work, juggling multiple duties, navigating a constantly changing environment, and absorbing more and more responsibility, often with little training and not nearly enough recognition. My message to them was that they are not alone, and that SVA is with them every step of the way. We're actively advocating on their behalf and working to offer virtual training and training at our National Conference in January. I also shared what we are seeing across 22 roundtables in 11 states, who today's student veterans really are, and what SVA is building to serve them more directly. We are aligned that student success matters, and SCOs are a critical part of making it happen. A few thank yous to the many people that helped make this all happen. To Denise Asselta, Mike Mitchell, Sandra Torres-Pintos, and the entire FAVES team, thank you for the invitation and the warm welcome. Your dedication and hard work do not go unnoticed, and they are deeply appreciated. It was great to see Dr. Jan Del Signore again. Thanks for all you do for the SCO community! A heartfelt thank you to our student veteran panelists for sharing their experiences. Thank you to Destin Lacquement, Daniel Bruzinski, Jarron Jackson, Jason Balk, Paulo Da Silva, and Phillip Stalvey! And finally, thank you to Faisal and Jay for making the trip and presenting to the SCOs alongside me, and to Tammy and Abby for all the hard work prepping us to be successful. Cory Boatwright shared thisYesterday I had the privilege of attending The Walt Disney Company's Veterans Institute, and I left energized! It was a full day of learning from Disney's world class facilitators. Secretary of the VA Doug Collins joined as a guest speaker, and his message stuck with me that veterans are not victims, they are valuable assets. I couldn't agree more. Disney brought together incredible panels of esteemed leaders in our space, all used the power of storytelling to carry a message. I've seen a lot of panels, and these were by far some of the best. The Disney team also shared how Disney fosters culture, engagement, and care. It was timely because these are exactly the things I'm focused on at Student Veterans of America right now as we transform the organization to serve more student veterans. I even got to meet Mickey, decked out in his America's 250th outfit! Thank you to Kevin Preston, for the invitation, Kabir Kumar for the warm welcome, and Tinisha Agramonte for your leadership and for sharing your story. It was truly powerful. And thank you to the entire Disney team for your partnership. Disney has been foundational to the success of SVA. Cory Boatwright shared thisArlington is an incredibly special place, no doubt. I've been there previously, but attending the memorial services yesterday was something I'll never forget. I joined our 2025 Student Veteran of the Year Nikki Gold, Deven Leigh D. of our Chapter of the Year Saddleback College Veterans Club, Faisal, and Melissa to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in honor of those who gave everything. Every Memorial Day, Student Veterans of America attends the services. It is a reminder of why we do the work we do. The best way I can think of to honor those that gave the ultimate sacrifice is to live a full and meaningful life of service. That is the responsibility we carry at SVA. To make sure no veteran walks alone, and to make sure every life given is honored by the lives we help shape to lead the future. #MemorialDay #StudentVeterans #SVA

Cory Boatwright liked thisCory Boatwright liked thisThis summer has reminded me that serving veterans doesn't stop when they leave the military, and it certainly doesn't stop where the road ends. While working in some of Alaska's most remote communities, I've had the opportunity to connect with veterans who are often separated by hundreds of miles from traditional support networks and resources. Every conversation has reinforced the importance of meeting veterans where they are, listening to their experiences, and helping bridge the gap between available resources and the people who have earned them. As President of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Student Veterans of America chapter, it's been rewarding to carry that same mission beyond campus. Whether it's sharing information about educational opportunities, discussing VA benefits, or simply building relationships, these interactions have shown me that meaningful support begins with genuine connection. Alaska presents unique challenges, but it also highlights the incredible resilience of the veteran community. I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue serving alongside them and to bring what I learn back to strengthen the programs and advocacy efforts at UAF. Service didn't end when I took off the uniform. Cory Boatwright reacted on thisCory Boatwright reacted on thisOn Tuesday, I had the privilege of attending the dedication of the USAA National Military Monument on the National Mall. The monument honors more than 41 million Americans who have served our nation. It's an extraordinary tribute, but what stayed with me most wasn't the monument itself. It was one name. My father's. Seeing Irvin J. Eversole's name illuminated on the monument stopped me in my tracks. It made me think about his service, the example he set for our family, and the millions of Americans who answered the call without ever seeking recognition. Since Tuesday, I've seen others share similar stories. They searched for a parent, grandparent, spouse, sibling, or friend. They found a name, but they walked away remembering a life. That's what makes this monument so meaningful. It reminds us that our nation's history wasn't built by a few famous leaders. It was built by millions of ordinary Americans who chose to serve. https://lnkd.in/eNpNDpTW

I’ve watched sports build confidence before the world recognized it, develop leaders before they ever held a title, and teach resilience that carries far beyond the playing field. That’s why I was genuinely excited to see Allstate deepen its investment in women’s sports through a new multi-year partnership with the SEC. The investment creates the Allstate SEC Women’s Champions Cup a year-long competition celebrating excellence across 10 women’s sports across all 16 SEC schools while also making Allstate the first-ever title sponsor of the SEC Women’s Volleyball Tournament and the presenting sponsor of the SEC Women’s Soccer Tournament. That’s not just sponsorship. That’s helping elevate the visibility and long-term sustainability of women’s athletics. Kudos to Tom Wilson, President & CEO of Allstate and in full transparency Chair of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Board for continuing to lead from the front! The connection to leadership is hard to ignore. EY found that 94% of women in C-suite positions played sports. Businesses consistently seek leaders who demonstrate resilience, teamwork, accountability, strategic thinking, and the ability to perform under pressure the very qualities athletics develops every day. I see it every day in my own work. At Hiring Our Heroes, four former Division I point guards help shape our organization’s strategy and impact. That’s no accident. Cory Boatwright reacted on thisCory Boatwright reacted on thisA letter for someone running a business tonight. Open when you delegate something for the first time. Hey there, You built this thing. You know every part of it, every quirk, every workaround, every thing that could go wrong and exactly how to fix it when it does. And now you’re delegating it. To a person on your team or to an AI agent you spent the weekend building and testing. Maybe both (probably both). There’s a specific kind of discomfort in the moment you have someone else take on something you're used to doing. What if they do it wrong? What if it breaks? Would have been faster/easier to just do it myself? These are all natural questions and a sign that you're building something that mattered. Of course it’s hard to hand over. But you did not build this business to be the only person, or the only system, that can run it. You built it to grow. You built it to enable a life that you always dreamed of. And growth requires delegating the thing you’re holding so tightly that nothing else can get to it. The task will get done. For the first couple of weeks you’ll check to make sure it got done right. You’ll give feedback. You'll implement better oversight systems to support you and the team, and slowly but surely the task will get done without you. And you’ll learn to trust the process too. Maybe things will eventually get done differently than you would have done it. Maybe even better.
