Now, let’s unpack Joe Flint’s article in The Wall Street Journal a bit. The piece rightly notes that public criticism of Nielsen is rare… until now. As is well known in the industry, Nielsen’s first attempts at “Panel + Big Data” resulted in a series of urgent meetings with Publishers and HoldCos to address the volatility of its fledgling methodology. In response, Nielsen introduced “enhancements” — fixes that were soon abandoned — leaving clients with the same rookie "Panel + Big Data" product they had already stated had issues. Seems pretty unstable to me. In effect: As ADWEEK said "Kneel, son." Take it or leave it. It’s also notable that Nielsen chose to try to discredit VideoAmp on two curious bases: Panel and MRC. ➡️ Panel: Nielsen has already publicly retired panel-only, acknowledging its shortcomings in a streaming-first world. Curious, then, that they’d use it to discredit others. ➡️ MRC: Let’s not forget Nielsen lost accreditation for more than a year. For them to now wield it as a badge of honor, while the council is still facing hard questions from clients in a series of crisis meetings, is…odd. And let’s clear the record: Nielsen’s suggestion that VideoAmp “promises bigger numbers” is false. VideoAmp is committed to one promise: the relentless pursuit of accuracy, fidelity, and transparency in measurement. And how good it feels to be able to say: we told you so. 😉 5 years ago, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert launched the "Changemakers" model to find visionaries who saw the league's long-term enterprise value. Along with foundational partners Nike, AT&T, and Deloitte, Google stepped up not as a sponsor, but as foundational investor. We invested in infrastructure—funding broadcast hours with ESPN, optimizing search algorithms for discoverability, and backing the WNBA Playoffs. These were brands who all put down capital early, believing in the growth opportunity of the league -- indicating to other brands that THIS is the place to be. And it worked. "Then vs. Now": 📈 Corporate Investment 2021: Exactly 1 brand had a standalone contract exclusively with the WNBA vs a bundle deal with the NBA too. 2026: 13 brands (including Delta Air Lines, Ally Financial, and Bumble) hold WNBA-only deals. League Sponsorship Revenue: Surged from ~$35M to a projected $147M—a 320% increase in brand revenue. 👀 The Audience Boom Viewership Ceiling: The most-watched 2021 game drew 755,000 viewers. Today, marquee regular-season games routinely eclipse 2.5 million viewers 💰 Franchise & Asset Value Average Team Valuation: Has skyrocketed from ~$15M to an average of $427M (a 2,746% surge in team equity). 📺 Media Rights Value: Jumped from $36M/year to a historic $200M/year under the new 11-year deal with Disney, NBC, and Amazon. Jersey Sponsorships: Marquee patches that used to command $500k now pull in $3M to $5M annually. This explosive growth over the last five years, was 25 years in the making, built on the shoulders of legends. The ones who flew commercial, practiced in community centers, and played through decades of being told women's sports "didn't have a market." They didn't just build a league; they built a proof of concept. They stayed with the game until the world’s infrastructure, media metrics, and corporate budgets caught up to their talent. Investing in women's sports is now one of the highest-yielding business decisions in modern entertainment. Steve had a way of making people feel at ease, of turning even the most ordinary moment into something memorable. He brought honesty, humor, and heart into every room he walked into, and I’m grateful for the years of friendship and laughter we shared. He will be missed by so many. RIP Steve
