David Lin shared this🙌 Pay it forward (and get some back) I recently had the opportunity to mentor current MBA students interested in product management as a career. The event was a workshop called “Product management: Behind the scenes” where alumni like me spend an evening helping students understand what it's really like to be a PM Students learned how PMs come up with new product ideas, what challenges we face, and of course how much free food a Meta PM eats everyday 😋 The workshop was great for the students and more than fulfilling for me. Here are some things I learned: 1. 💡 The PM role is still ambiguous 💡 Students still don’t know exactly what a PM does and to be honest after 10 years of being a PM it isn’t necessarily clearer for me either! But the flip side is that as a PM you have more opportunity to define your role and lean more into design, strategy, or analytics as long as you are showing impact to your organization 2. 💡This generation of PMs are more interested in product strategy💡 8 years ago when I was an aspiring PM, we all wanted to be PMs to “build cool things” and influence the UX, but I learned this generation is interested in how product can influence a company's strategy, especially with breakthroughs such as AI 3. 💡Look to the younger generation for fresh ideas (many are better) 💡 After almost 10 years as a PM, I’m operating with so much muscle memory I don’t often think outside the box. During this workshop, students were asked how they would convince leadership to fund their product. One student said they would create a funny tik tok video that acts out the customer problem, shows the massive opportunity, and get that video viral within the organization. Damn, I liked that one! 🔑 Overall, it was a great experience to mentor and I encourage other professionals to do the same. What stood out was that these emails had the exact same format, structure, and almost identical yet personalized text. Even the follow-up emails followed the same format. Interestingly, some of these candidates know me personally or have had conversations with me recently, yet none of the emails referenced our past interactions, such as "We met at XYZ VJ." This raises a question: what is happening? What can we learn from this situation? 😆 A for the effort and AI usage for sure!! 👏

The last few weeks have been a powerful reminder of how much we can achieve when we blend persistence with purpose. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some incredible milestones and engaging in deep conversations that highlight one recurring theme: Resilience is not just a trait; it’s a practice. It has been a vibrant May at Stanford University, and I’m still reflecting on the energy of the campus. A major highlight was the grand opening of the new permanent home for the @stanford Department of African and African American Studies (DAAAS). Seeing this department—which only became a standalone academic unit in 2024—settle into its new space near Meyer Green is truly inspiring. It’s a testament to the hard work of so many who advocated for this vision. The opening aligned perfectly with the Stanford Black Alumni Summit, which brought together students, staff, and alumni for a weekend of reconnection. It was fantastic to see friends and colleagues, and I was even reminded of the winding paths we all take—sometimes even those that lead through unexpected "Paradise." (I got to say hello to the lead actor in that, a Stanford grad :)) I also had the opportunity to attend the Stanford GSB Black Conference. The lineup of speakers was exceptional, and I walked away with so many tactical insights from Michael Seibel, Tina Perry, and Danessa Myricks. The post-conference Gala was a particular highlight; it was truly inspiring to see current students, alumni, and staff all together, celebrating shared success and the bright future ahead. Great job by Allison Rouse, our leader! It was great to share the day with friends like Mia Love, Christelle Mombo-Zigah and Alma Ramos, M.A. To round out the experience, I had the pleasure of a long-form conversation with Lily Zheng. We discussed the core tenets of their new book, and their perspective on how we can ensure people are treated truly "FAIRly" in our organizations is something I’ll be carrying into my work for a long time to come. All this - and a chance to see LeVar Burton receive award for his career. Whether it’s institutional growth, personal career pivots, or the quiet work of building inclusive cultures, these events all pointed to the same truth: Goals are rarely reached in a straight line. They are reached through steady commitment, genuine connection, and the resilience to keep showing up. What milestones have you been celebrating lately? Let’s connect in the comments. P.S. I went from Senior PM to VP in less than 3 years. If I could do it all over again, here’s what I would change. I was a Sr. Director, and the Global Head of DEI for one of the world’s leading EDA companies, a top innovator in chip design. But eventually, I started to feel like I was hired to be the face of the function, and not the actual leader of the function. Reflecting on that experience as that company's first-ever DEI leader, there were natural growing pains I probably should have stuck around for. At the same time, another company came calling with a VP title, the highest base salary I’d ever seen, a 40% bonus, and a very nice stock package. It felt like a no-brainer. But here’s what happened: I left because I felt handcuffed in my Sr. Director role, and I let the money and title at the new company make the decision for me. What I didn’t do? The simplest thing. I didn’t check the company’s financial health. If I had just looked at their balance sheet or quarterly reports, I would have seen the red flags. Instead, I got caught up in the base pay and made a bonehead decision. The result? The 40% bonus came in the form of 10% and as bad as we were doing financially, I was thankful for that. The stock??? It dwindled down to nothing, eventually forcing the company to go private. And after I was there for a year and a half, the company laid off two-thirds of its workforce, and I was part of the fallout. The hardest part? If I had stayed at my previous company, I’d be a millionaire today just from the stock alone. Here’s what I learned: - Don’t just chase the salary, study the stability. - Culture and values outlast compensation packages. - Protect your long-term wealth, not just your short-term income. If you’re considering a new opportunity, don’t make the mistake I did. Look past the base pay and into the financial facts and future of the company!
