Deanna Lam liked thisDeanna Lam liked thisOne thing I’ve learned over the years of building teams is that the right opportunity at the right moment can completely change someone’s life. It’s not just a job title that changes. It’s their career path, their future, and sometimes even their livelihood. And since joining Employ, that belief has only gotten stronger. So, I started thinking about how I could play a bigger role in helping people find their next career move. I spend a lot of time talking with our customers who are building incredible teams across so many industries. At the same time, I’m lucky to know a network full of talented people who might be looking for their next place to make an impact. And it occurred to me…💡 I sit in a pretty unique spot between the two. So, I want to try something new. Each week, I’m going to spotlight one of our customers and share a few of the roles that they’re hiring for. My hope is simple: help great people discover great opportunities. Kicking things off with a company very near and dear to my heart: madhappy. Not only is it one of the fastest-growing apparel brands in the U.S.—and recently opened its first store in Japan—but it was also started by my friend and fellow mission-driven founder, Peiman Raf (that’s us in the pic wearing Madhappy!). Since launching in 2017, Madhappy has dedicated itself to bringing awareness to mental health and supports research and advancement of mental health initiatives through the Madhappy Foundation. Peiman and his team built a global brand around optimism—expressed through apparel, events, and experimental retail spaces around the world. I still remember selling my car to fund the company and going without a salary for 3 years just to get things off the ground 😱 Wild to think about now. I’m closing this chapter that shaped me deeply — both professionally and personally 🙏 . I’m SO grateful for my teammates (esp. the early believers, who took a chance with their careers by believing in me and many of us became lifelong friends), our customers, partners, investors, and the trust placed in us at ReSci. We were early! building an AI-powered software long before GenAI was a thing. We were the disruptors nobody wanted to try at first. And one customer at a time, we delivered results and eventually became an industry leader, earning the rights to partner with some of the most innovative businesses. Fast forward: We joined the Constant Contact family. I had the privilege to work with seriously talented, hardworking people — folks who challenged me, pushed me to grow, and made the hard work super rewarding. It gave me room to lead, navigate change, and operate at real scale. I learned to think bigger, move faster — while caring deeply about outcomes and people. To everyone who collaborated with me, taught me, or took a chance on me — THANK YOU 💙. Truly. This has been a career-defining journey, and I’ll be cheering hard as the teams continue building what’s next! I’m taking a short reset — and then it’s back to building. New problems. New ideas. Same founder energy 🤩 Onward! Grateful, energized, and excited for what’s ahead. Deanna Lam liked thisDeanna Lam liked thisWhen Ryan Schonfeld started HiveWatch I had a full time job running marketing for another SaaS startup, but was moonlighting to help get HiveWatch’s marketing up and running. (Many of you have heard the story that he would pay me in late night froyo.) Almost 4 years ago I told Ryan that I was going to look for a new job…and asked how he felt about us working together to build HiveWatch. So many people cringe when I say that I work with (and report to!) my husband. But for the last 4 years it’s worked for us! We’ve really enjoyed being able to connect over work, take some fun business trips, and build the company together. A few months ago we made a decision. Our kids are 8 and 10, and as HiveWatch grows it’s become increasingly difficult to balance our family, and work life. I thought kids would get easier as they got older, but it’s been quite the opposite! Soccer practices, theater performances, homework… it just became such an impossible task to manage it all. With that, I’ll soon be stepping away from my current full time position as VP, Revenue and into an advising role for HiveWatch. I couldn’t be more excited for my new role as a full time mom! This is something I’ve always wanted, and something our family has worked really hard (and sacrificed) for. I’m so excited for the next stages of HiveWatch, and this new chapter in my life. Deanna Lam liked thisDeanna Lam liked thisHuge congratulations to Figma on its IPO! I first met Dylan Field back in 2011 when he applied to the Kleiner Perkins Fellows Program. I was at Kleiner Perkins and had just launched the program, and Dylan, who was only 18 at the time, came highly recommended by professors at Brown and several founders I trusted. He became one of our very first Fellows - joining a program that included Rick Song, Devin Finzer, Yang Su, David Hsu, Marty Kausas and others. After the program, Dylan dropped out of Brown to build what would eventually become Figma with Evan Wallace. I still remember him eagerly demoing an early prototype - using Figma to map my face onto Brad Pitt’s head. At the time, I didn’t know what to make of it. But all great products start somewhere. (Yes, I’m including the photo here.) What was a figment of Dylan’s imagination has now grown into a platform used by over 13 million people a month, including nearly all of the Fortune 500. What began as a browser-based design tool is now a full-stack creative engine, expanding into code, content, and collaboration. As AI reshapes how teams build software, Figma is emerging as the design system of record for the next generation of products. But beyond the product, what’s most impressive is how Dylan has grown into one of the most thoughtful and grounded leaders in tech. He’s navigated moments of massive scale and pressure, all with a deep commitment to Figma’s culture and community. One sign: many of the early Figmates are still there and in leadership roles. Looking at you, Praveer Melwani, Kris Rasmussen, Yuhki Yamashita, Sho Kuwamoto. This IPO is a huge milestone - not just for design, but for software, and for what’s possible when you bet on the right people early. Congrats to the entire Figma team. For any friends currently in IB, investing or corporate finance looking for a way into product / tech -- you won't want to miss it. Registrations start in 1 week 🤝Deanna Lam liked thisI'm thrilled to share that, after a long hiatus from teaching, I will be returning to Stanford University this summer to teach a subject that is near and dear to me—product management! The class will focus on what I believe is the most underinvested part of product management education—the strategic and soft skills to effectively navigate organizational challenges and ship successful products. In the age of AI where the hard skills like writing product requirements can be automated, these soft skills are more important than ever. As the CEO of a product—and often with zero direct reports—there's no textbook for handling the complex situations every PM inevitably faces. Through case studies and role-playing, class participants will learn from experienced PM leaders from Airbnb, LinkedIn, Google, eBay, and other notable companies. They will learn how to lead successful product launches (and recover from failed ones), secure resources for what may be perceived as “unsexy” products, foster alignment with cross-functional stakeholders, balance short-term growth with long-term innovation, and cultivate trusted relationships throughout the organization. This class is ideal for current PMs (or aspiring PMs) who are looking to uplevel their strategic and soft skillset.
