Not because he’s becoming a genius. Because he now has better SaaS taste than most enterprise procurement teams. Of course, he still thinks dinosaurs, Paw Patrol, and chocolate pancakes are the pillars of civilization. But somewhere between cartoons and chaos, the kid picked the subscription that talks back. John Engates liked thisJohn Engates liked thisI usually try to keep LinkedIn posts short, but one month at Cloudflare deserves more than a few lines. “Can we explain cryptographic transparency logs, oblivious HTTP, and privacy-preserving proxies without losing the reader in the first paragraph?” That was one of the first questions I got to work on at Cloudflare. And it turns out, it’s a much harder problem than it sounds. Over the past month, I’ve been working on products such as Privacy Proxy, Privacy Gateway, Key Transparency, Binary Transparency and many more. These technologies are built to make the Internet more private, secure, and trustworthy. The engineering behind these products is fascinating. But as I quickly learned, building great technology is only part of the challenge. The other part is making sure people understand why it matters. Not by oversimplifying it. Not by removing the technical depth. But by finding the balance between precision and clarity. That meant diving into product documentation, asking engineers “one more question” (many, many times), challenging my own understanding, and collaborating across product, engineering, marketing, and technical teams until every sentence accurately reflected what the product actually does. As a Product Management intern, that’s one of the things I’ve enjoyed the most: being at the intersection of incredibly technical work and the people it’s built for. Beyond the products themselves, what has made this first month so rewarding is the culture. I’ve never been in an environment where curiosity is encouraged this much. Whether it’s reaching out to an engineer you’ve never met, brainstorming with another PM, joining a hackathon, or simply asking “Can you explain this to me?”, people genuinely want to help. There’s a real culture of building, sharing ideas, and learning from one another. And then there’s the intern community. Although we’re spread across completely different teams, everyone brings a unique perspective, and we’ve built a network where we constantly exchange ideas, support each other, and celebrate each other’s wins. One month in, and one lesson stands out: Sometimes the hardest product problem isn’t building the technology. It’s making sure people can understand how powerful it really is. Excited for everything that’s still ahead. ☁️

John Engates liked thisJohn Engates liked thisCaution: we are reaching a point where we are no longer updating our mental models as fast as AI is improving. For example, we often assume how good an AI model is at performing task X based on a test we ran three months ago. That single, discrete experience can shape our perception of an AI’s utility for a long time. But AI models released last week can perform tasks at a quality far superior than those available 3 months ago. In some cases, that gap is the difference between producing a viable output and being useless for task X. Reassessing what AI can and cannot do for an organization is about to become a continuous job.

As I wrap up my Marketing Internship at Frost, I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute alongside such a wonderful team. Throughout the summer, I gained hands on experience supporting marketing initiatives, community events, and day-to-day projects while learning what it takes to bring ideas to life. Beyond the work itself, I had the chance to build meaningful relationships with mentors and fellow interns who made this experience both rewarding and memorable. A huge thank you to Catie Meanor, Bill Day, and the entire Marketing Department at Frost for making these eight weeks so meaningful and for welcoming me from day one. Your guidance, encouragement, and willingness to invest in my growth made this an experience I'll always value. As I head into my final semester at UT Austin, I'm excited to carry everything I've learned into the next chapter!

John Engates liked thisJohn Engates liked thisI’ve been on a GLP-1 journey for nearly two years. I’ve lost weight and feel good. But my progress has definitely stalled. In the beginning, it was amazing. I immediately started eating less, and the weight came off. But once I plateaued, I had questions. Do I take more? Should I be taking other peptides? Friends are constantly giving me advice, but are they the right source? Most of what I found online seems to point to the same answer: take more. Maybe that’s right. Maybe it isn’t. I honestly don’t know. What I really want is data. I want someone to look at my labs, my wearables, and understand how my body is actually responding. Standardized dosing wasn’t built for me. It was built for the average person in a clinical trial. Then I found out an old friend was building exactly what I am looking for. I’ve known Lloyd Armbrust for more than 15 years. When I saw what he was building at RonanRX, my first thought was that I wanted to become a customer. My second thought was that we should be investors too. Lloyd is a 2x YC founder who has built and exited multiple companies, including a $50M U.S. medical manufacturing business, and has raised nearly $100M. I backed his first Y Combinator company years ago. His co-founder, Emily Colman, spent nearly a decade in healthcare, most recently at Eli Lilly and Company, helping physicians care for patients in weight management. RonanRx isn’t another telehealth clinic. They’re building a personalized platform for peptide therapies, including GLP-1s, that combines your health data, AI, physicians, and an integrated pharmacy to create treatment plans that evolve over time. Personalized health is obviously the future and I’m excited to back Lloyd and Emily as they bring it to the masses.
