Jodi Owczarski, IOM shared thisLast week, I had the opportunity to host Senator Elissa Slotkin for a morning of conversation and connection with a small group of local leaders. Together, we talked about what makes our community strong, the challenges our businesses are navigating, and the opportunities we see for the future of our region. One of the things I value most about this work is the ability to help bridge the gap between local experiences and statewide or national conversations. Our members are living the realities behind workforce challenges, economic uncertainty, growth, housing pressures, innovation, and community development every single day. Creating opportunities for those voices to be heard directly by elected officials is incredibly important. The conversation was thoughtful, productive, and encouraging. I left feeling grateful for leaders who are willing to listen, ask meaningful questions, and engage in honest dialogue about what communities like ours need to continue thriving. Proud of the role the Michigan West Coast Chamber of Commerce gets to play as a convener, advocate, and connector for our business community and our region.

Jodi Owczarski, IOM liked thisJodi Owczarski, IOM liked thisI recently spent time with our teams in Changshu, Shanghai and Zhuhai, China. At each site, we focused on one question: what does giving back look like here? IngeviCares, Ingevity's community engagement program, shares one purpose everywhere we operate. But how people give and volunteer is shaped by culture, and a program designed for one region won't automatically fit another. So rather than bring the U.S. model with us, we built the Asia Pacific approach together. For these teams, volunteering is also a way to strengthen connections with one another, through activities like beach cleanups and tree plantings. Across the region, that commitment is already showing up in the community. Our China sites are collecting books for local organizations, and our team in Japan packed relief supplies following the earthquake in Kumamoto. As head of IngeviCares, my role is to make sure that work has the structure and support to grow, and that our teams around the globe can share in our mission to make a positive impact in our communities. IngeviCares in Asia Pacific shows that inclusion isn't about everyone doing things the same way. It's about everyone having a meaningful place in the same mission. Every other year, the committees meet to develop Legislative Priorities for the upcoming legislative session. In addition to priority setting, the HHR Committee meets three to four times per year to discuss current legislative and regulatory proposals. At these meetings, committee members are afforded the unique opportunity to interact with lawmakers, industry representatives, and state agencies to make their voice heard on key issues. MKSK Principal Andrew Overbeck joined Brandon Selhorst, Director of Economic Development with the City of Toledo, Jennifer Van Horn, Chief of Planning for Metroparks Toledo, and Councilmember and ConnecToledo planner Mac Driscoll to showcase the stories behind Downtown Toledo’s Transformation at the recent APA Ohio statewide planning conference. As a result of careful planning, community involvement, collaboration, and public and private investment, Downtown Toledo has been completely transformed since APA Ohio last held its statewide conference in Toledo in 2015. Adopted in 2017 and updated in 2023, the Downtown Toledo Master Plan brought together a collection of community, business, institutional, county, and city leadership to develop a new vision for the future of downtown. ConnecToledo, the City of Toledo, Lucas County, and Metroparks Toledo have worked together to implement all 12 of the plan’s priority action items. The results benefit all Toledoans: $244M of completed catalytic projects, from the new ProMedica corporate headquarters to Promenade Park, to the residential conversion of downtown office towers and warehouse buildings for both market rate and workforce housing. Investment in the riverfront is nearly complete. More than $425M of catalytic projects are currently implemented or underway, including the $200M Glass City Metropark and the build out of the riverwalk and riverfront park system that fulfills the community’s vision of a restored riverfront park system on both sides of the Maumee River. An $80M renovation to the Glass City Convention Center and hotel has boosted downtown’s hospitality market. Downtown mobility improvements have also been made, including the Jefferson Avenue Cycletrack, and the pedestrian-focused streetscape improvements on Summit Street. Another $150 million of park improvements are on the way, including the MKSK-designed Glass City Upriver Metropark.
