What an exciting way to kick off the new year on the platform that jumpstarted my own Chief of Staff career!
When I became the Chief of Staff at
Hugging Face 6️⃣ years ago, it was my first time being a Chief of Staff and my CEO's first time having a Chief of Staff.
And then, almost as soon as I started, the world shut down 😷
COVID hit, offices closed, and suddenly I was a first-time Chief of Staff helping a CEO figure out how to run a company remotely...
...in the middle of a global crisis 🌎
💌 So I did what I knew how to do: I reached out. A lot.
☕️ I started DM’ing Chiefs of Staff on LinkedIn, hundreds of them, asking for 1️⃣ 5️⃣ minute coffee chats so I could:
→ learn what their day-to-day actually looked like
→ understand how they partnered with their CEOs
→ hear what was working (and what was breaking) as their companies moved from in-person to remote
→ steal… respectfully 😅… their best systems, scripts, and operating rhythms
And I learned something pretty quickly ⬇️
The best way to learn how to be a Chief of Staff isn’t Googling it (and we definitely didn’t have ChatGPT back then).
𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟.
You take 1️⃣ 0️⃣ different answers from people in the role, spot the patterns, and then consolidate them into a solution that fits your CEO, your org size, and your stage.
💡 That experience is why I started posting on LinkedIn 4️⃣ years ago.
I wanted to share the tactical lessons I was learning in real time, for anyone else who was sitting there thinking:
“Is it just me… or is this role wildly ambiguous and kind of lonely sometimes?”
💜 What started as me crowdsourcing answers for help turned into building a community around the Chief of Staff space.
And somehow, that community is now 5️⃣ 5️⃣ , 0️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ people here on LinkedIn. 😭
🙏🏼 I’m so grateful you’re here: whether you’ve been following since the early days or you just found your way into this corner of LinkedIn.
