What Diversity Actually Means
What Diversity Actually Means
When people talk about diversity, they tend to focus on women and racial minorities. Just yesterday, a friend of mine…

Megan Rose Dickey posted thisI’m officially a boomerang. I’m excited to be back at Gazetteer, this time as a managing editor helping with editorial strategy and processes for both digital and print. A good amount of my work will be behind the scenes but you shouldn’t be surprised if and when you see my byline. I won’t have a beat, per se, but it’s safe to say you’ll see me writing about the Valkyries and professional women’s sports in the Bay (SF Firebells, anyone?). Very excited to be back. Let’s get it. https://lnkd.in/gP4YVHVr

Megan Rose Dickey shared thisI started at GrowthX AI last Monday. Today, CEO Marcel Santilli announced our $12 million Series A round led by Madrona. Safe to say, no regrets over here! In the past couple of years, AI has became a major source of fear and anxiety in newsrooms, but I kept finding myself feeling more curious than scared about the technology. That curiosity is what led me to Growth X, where we're going all in on AI while keeping humans in the loop. As Marcel said, “the future isn't AI replacing experts” but it’s “AI turning your organization's best thinking into repeatable systems.” https://lnkd.in/g4XNcRxc

Megan Rose Dickey reposted thisMegan Rose Dickey reposted thisBig NEWS! GrowthX AI raised $12M Series A led by Madrona. We scaled to $7m+ profitably in less than a year. We get to be growth-as-a-service for companies like Ramp, Webflow, Reddit, Superhuman, Abnormal, Bolt, Vapi and many others. But our path here has been quite different… We started with AI-powered growth services, not software. This isn't because we love services (we don't 😬). It's because services force you to understand what actually works. Take content creation. It's not just typing words. It's a sequence of expert decisions: → Researching with specific intent and audience in mind → Structuring information in ways that create clarity → Drafting with the right balance of detail and directness → Editing not just for grammar, but for impact Each step involves important judgment calls and thought processes that most AI tools completely miss. Our platform captures these expert patterns, codifies it, and helps us reproduce it at scale. With this funding, we're accelerating our platform vision to tackle more types of services and will soon open it up more broadly. The future isn't AI replacing experts. It's AI turning your organization's best thinking into repeatable systems. PS. Thank you all for the support in this journey ❤️ PPS. Link to full blog in comments

Megan Rose Dickey shared thisSome personal news! I've joined GrowthX AI as an associate director! The name of the game: use AI alongside actual human beings to turn brands into publishers and leaders into influencers. Bonus points: I get to reunite with TechCrunch legends Matthew Panzarino and Darrell Etherington 🙌🏾

Megan Rose Dickey shared thisThe Fillmore, once known as the "Harlem of the West," has lost a lot of Black culture, Black people, and Black-owned businesses over the past few decades. Now, there's a group of Black business owners working to reclaim the Fillmore's legacy. “We are a very resilient people and we do a lot with minimal resources," Ericka Scott, owner of Honey Art Studio, told me. "That’s what we’ve done in the past and that’s what we’re doing now.” https://lnkd.in/gVXZ3C8bBlack business owners looking to reclaim Fillmore's legacy take matters into their own handsBlack business owners looking to reclaim Fillmore's legacy take matters into their own hands

Megan Rose Dickey posted thisICYMI, SFPD has been using drones for surveillance at major events like SF Pride and Outside Lands. They've also sharply increased their usage of the controversial technology every month. Read my story here: https://lnkd.in/gEcyAdad

Megan Rose Dickey posted thisYesterday was my last day at Axios SF. What’s next: Gazetteer San Francisco, where I’ll cover business and technology in this fine city by the Bay. I was drawn to Gazetteer’s rejection of tech platforms for distribution and monetization. Plus, I couldn’t agree more with their philosophy that clickbait doesn’t serve anyone, but instead makes people feel more overwhelmed and less interested in civic affairs. No spoilers, but I’m excited to dig deeper into the tech industry’s impact on SF + lots more. I start Oct. 7! In the meantime, peep what the Gazetteer team has been up to over here: https://sf.gazetteer.co/

Megan Rose Dickey reacted on thisMegan Rose Dickey reacted on thisFirst, I vaguely wondered if people were using AI to write their posts here. Then I began to see people complaining about other people using AI to write their posts here and then I started to wonder if those complaint posts about people using AI to write their posts here were written with AI. And then I only noticed posts about how the posts here by people complaining about other people using AI are written by AI. So now I’m reading all of these posts very closely, which is delivering the algorithm exactly what it wants from me, my time and attention. I hope you have either enjoyed this observation or this dog waiting outside a bar in the Castro with his basketball.

Just staggering example of how journalism is being stolen given by Jon Slade in his talk with Dominic Ponsford at the Future of Media Technilogy Conference. The FT discovered last week that one free trial account had made 1.23 million access requests to the FT’s News in an eight hour period. Jon’s dry comment on that wasn’t bad either: “I think that might be a bot.”

"More fundamentally, it misunderstands what publishers sell. They do not sell access to information. Information is abundant and often free. They sell verification, curation, original reporting, investigative journalism, and the brand assurance that what you are reading is accurate and important. These are exactly the things that become more valuable as AI-generated content proliferates." 👏 👏 👏 Great piece and worth a read.
