Mitch Gordon reposted thisMitch Gordon reposted this✈️ In my role as Chief Operating Officer at Learn International, a family-owned study abroad organization based in Ireland, I travel monthly from Arizona to our headquarters. I sometimes “rawdog it,” as the kids say these days, and with all that time in the air, I do a lot of slow, deliberate thinking about our field and where we’re headed. 🌍 Much of my work is focused on scaling and growing our organization while staying true to our mission: expanding access to study abroad, promoting sustainability, and providing student-focused, high-impact programming. That focus is what drives me, and what has shaped the last twenty years of my career across organizations of every stripe—large nonprofits, large privately held companies, mid-sized private equity-backed firms, and small family-owned businesses like the one I serve today. 💡 What I’ve learned is this: the labels don’t tell the whole story. I’ve seen nonprofits operate with a laser focus on margins and profitability, and I’ve worked with private companies that are deeply mission-driven, pouring millions into DEI initiatives and student centric programming. The vilification of private equity and privately held organizations as inherently “money hungry” is reductive—and dismissive of the mission-focused staff who show up every day to serve students. 🤝 The truth is, armies of passionate professionals work across every type of organization in our field. Nonprofits hire talent from private equity–backed companies because they value business acumen and financial sustainability. Private companies bring in nonprofit veterans to sharpen their mission and enrich their programming. I’ve seen PE board members put students above profit, and nonprofit boards push for higher margins at all costs. The reality is more complex than the stereotypes. ❤️ If there’s one thing that unites us, it’s our passion for the work. Mudslinging about which type of organization is “better” only weakens our collective efforts. In fact, during the pandemic, private equity provided a much-needed lifeline to organizations that would otherwise not have survived the global shutdown. We’re still not out of the woods—higher education continues to face seismic challenges—and this is the time for collaboration, not division. 👥 At the end of the day, it’s not about tax status or ownership structure—it’s about people. Who they are, what they value, and how they shape their organizations. My greatest joy has been building high-achieving, mission-driven teams who complement each other and elevate the work we do. 🍀 I feel lucky to be at Learn International, where I get to help build and shape a team that advances our mission. It’s not easy—we don’t have the safety net of private equity’s deep pockets—but the work is meaningful, and that makes the challenges worth it. Instead of throwing cheap shots at one another, we’d all do better to focus on what unites us: our shared belief in the transformative power of global education.

Yet when it comes to student preferences, they want the mid-sized schools, according to a recent survey by the TIAA Institute. Supply doesn't match demand. This is where mergers and acquisitions in the sector can play a role. Typically, we talk about mergers only as a financial rescue. That framing misses the more interesting case: a product strategy that combines two small institutions to actually build the mid-sized experience students seem to want. Mitch Gordon liked thisI tend to agree with the general premise of this article, even if the reality is more nuanced than a simple "Zoom interviews are bad" conclusion. Over the years, I've interviewed candidates who came across as exceptional on Zoom: polished, engaging, and confident. Then I met them in person, and they were a completely different personality. That doesn't make them dishonest. Some people simply present themselves differently through a screen. But it does reinforce that there are aspects of communication, presence, and interpersonal dynamics that are much easier to assess face-to-face. Of course, there are organizations that are fully remote, where Zoom is the workplace and virtual interactions are the norm. In those cases, a virtual interview may be entirely appropriate. But for companies that operate in-office or on a hybrid model, I still believe there is tremendous value in meeting finalists in person before making a hiring decision. It's not about favoring one format over another. It's about using the format that best reflects the environment in which someone will actually be working. As with most things in hiring, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer, but I do think we've swung a little too far toward convenience at the expense of human connection.Mitch Gordon liked thisBosses should not rely so heavily on virtual job interviews when hiring as they don't capture candidates' personality and passion, UK PM Andy Burnham has said. Mitch Gordon liked thisMitch Gordon liked thisI talk to so many people who find “self-promotion” icky but the truth is if you get over it, you’ll 2-3x your potential career upside. Here’s how to get over the fear: At Maven we work with world-class operators: PMs from OpenAI, designers from Airbnb, MLEs from GitHub. People who are genuinely the best in the world at what they do. And most of them avoid promoting a single thing they make. They think it is icky. Salesy. Beneath them. They worry their peers will quietly judge them. Meanwhile I scroll LinkedIn and watch people with far less experience build followings, land speaking gigs, get their dream roles, and shape the conversation in their industry. If you're an expert who hates self-promotion, here’s a simple reframe: You're sharing what you know with people who need it. That's a generous act, not a vain one. Start small. Pick one platform and post twice a week about the real work you do. Be honest about what you have not figured out yet because the most credible voices online are the ones willing to admit uncertainty. You do not need to become an influencer, and you can be wildly successful without ever doing this. But it is just one of the easiest and most effective shortcuts available, once you build the mindset to get over the ick. Mitch Gordon reacted on thisMitch Gordon reacted on thisMy husband and I just got back from backpacking Europe - as in we carried actual backpacks instead of roller luggage, took trains instead of renting a car and flew by the seat of our pants WAY more than I'm used to. There is a version of European travel we often see on social media where everything is booked in advance, and the main takeaway is the enjoyment of the locale and sights. Then there is the version we did, which is the one where you have to talk to locals and occasionally be wrong about which train you're on. Writer Kathryn Jezer-Morton recently gave a name to what we were accidentally doing on this trip: friction-maxxing. The deliberate practice of tolerating the discomfort that technology has designed away. Backpacking is that, if nothing else. Every leg of the trip comes with built-in friction you cannot optimize your way out of, and the young people who travel this way are building a certain sub-type of resilience that is hard to obtain in other settings. In fact, I just spoke with one of my students today who is backpacking in Europe who says she has grown more in the past month than in the past five years. I'm happy that she is friction-maxxing alongside me. After all, we know AI is coming after technical skills first. That's why human-first skills are going to be increasingly important to cultivate. Travel opens your mind, gives you the opportunity to problem-solve in real time, to negotiate with your travel partner, to argue respectfully with the Marxist in your hostel bar. A 2023 survey found 58% of surveyed employers do not think recent graduates have the durable human-skills needed for today's workplaces. It's not surprising to see that in a world that has designed friction out of everyday life. So if you are a young person (or any person) planning a trip this summer, go do it the uncomfortable way. You will come out the other side better for the effort. Maybe even more employable.

Of the 1,000+ applicants, the majority were junior status; making up 33% of the total number. 18% were Freshman, 25% Sophomore and 13% were Senior status (Graduate students made up the remaining 10%). Biology, Engineering and Business were the top three majors that applied.

A couple of months ago, we launched the Beyond Venture Limited VC Training Program to help aspiring investors, operators, and ecosystem builders develop a practical understanding of venture capital. The response has been incredible, and as we approach the final stretch of the program, I want to encourage everyone currently enrolled to stay the course. We have just two classes remaining, with the next session taking place this Monday. Building on that foundation, all participants of that program will transition into the Beyond Venture VC Internship Program, which officially begins on June 22nd. Unlike traditional internships focused on observation, participants will work directly on venture capital activities including market research, deal sourcing, due diligence, founder support, investor relations, and fund operations. Interns will gain exposure to the full investment lifecycle while contributing to real projects and supporting real founders. All Interns will be split into rolling teams covering all areas of VC. Investment Team Due Diligence Team Portfolio Support Team Research & Intelligence Team Every Intern will work on each team for a selected period and work on actual work to gain first hand experience across board. Too many people learn venture capital from books, podcasts, and X threads. We believe the best way to learn is by doing the work. The internship is designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, giving participants experience that translates directly into careers in venture capital, startup investing, founder support, and ecosystem development.
