Rebecca Yang posted thisToday, many talented Visa colleagues learned that their roles were eliminated. To those affected: I’m thinking of you. Losing a role can be disorienting and painful. Your value is not defined by your job, and this decision does not diminish your talent, contributions, or impact. When you’re ready to think about what comes next, I want to offer practical support. Over the years, I’ve advised thousands of people at all career stages on navigating transitions across the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. Here are three concrete ways I can support you: 1) Targeted introductions If someone in my network could be helpful, send me their LinkedIn profile and one or two sentences explaining why you would like to connect. To be respectful of everyone’s time, I’ll first ask whether that person is open to the connection and make the introduction only if they agree (double opt-in introduction). 2) Referrals to Visa roles Send me the role(s) you’re interested in, your tailored resume, 2-3 sentences written in the 3rd person about why you're a good fit for the role, and I'll refer you. Be strategic and ask for referrals for roles you're a good fit for. Rebecca Yang liked thisRebecca Yang liked thisAs you may have heard, 2,600 good friends, peers, and incredibly professional and honorable people were laid off at Visa this week. The impact is difficult to measure, as thousands of lives and families will feel the effects of it. But it's important to remember: this can happen to anyone with a job, at any level. It is not a reflection of your value or who you are. Most of us are more susceptible to it than we'd like to believe. My suggestion is simple: focus on what you can control and try not to spend too much energy on what you cannot, whether or not you're part of the 2,600. If you're employed, consider asking yourself: • Am I financially prepared if this happened to me? • Would I be marketable today? How current are my skills and industry knowledge? • Am I relying on a sense of security that I don't actually own? • Am I taking full advantage of my company's benefits and total rewards? • Do I want to continue doing what I'm doing today? • What type of support would I need if this happened? These questions can help you assess your current reality because, honestly, it can happen to any of us. Rebecca Yang liked thisRebecca Yang liked this7% of my colleagues were affected by layoffs this week. Hearing the news at Visa has been sobering. In my four years of working across two companies, this is the third or fourth layoff I've experienced. While each one is different, the emotions surrounding them are painfully familiar. First come the emails. Then the uncertainty. Then the news you hear first hand and retroactively. And eventually, the conversation fades, with everyone expected to carry on as though things are back to normal. I was fortunate that this round did not impact me. But I'll never see layoffs as "normal," even if they've become increasingly common across the tech industry. Behind every role is a person, a teammate, and often a family whose lives have been turned upside down. Rebecca Yang liked thisRebecca Yang liked thisThis week, many of my colleagues were hit by a workforce reduction. I’m still here. But I was laid off myself by another company almost exactly four years ago, and my husband was laid off twice just last year. Between us, we did everything you’re “supposed” to do — worked hard, over-delivered, built the resumes and reputations. None of that made us exempt. For those let go: anger and disappointment are fair. You built things here. For those of us still here: survivor’s guilt and the unease of a smaller room are just as real. Here’s what I’d offer from the other side: don’t let your title answer “who am I.” A company can end that relationship in an afternoon, but your skills and judgment can’t be laid off. And it’s usually in the chaos, not the calm, that we change most. My own layoff didn’t feel like growth at the time. It felt like the floor giving out. Only in hindsight did I see it reshape how I think about who I am and what I actually want. This isn’t a verdict on your worth. It’s a chapter, not a failure. Someone recently called me bold for sharing these kinds of messages on LinkedIn. I’d call it overdue. This platform is optimized for wins, but careers are mostly made of the moments that don’t make the highlight reel. And those are the ones that shape us most. Rebecca Yang liked thisRebecca Yang liked thisIt's been a difficult week at Visa for many of us. First, for everyone who has reached out to check on me, I want to say thank you. I'm okay and I'm sorry if I've been slow to respond. It's been an emotional and hectic few days. My heart is with all of the incredibly talented colleagues whose roles were impacted. I've had the privilege of working alongside some exceptional people and I know they'll continue to do great things wherever they land. As for me, a few months ago, I made the extremely difficult decision to relocate to San Francisco next month to continue building my career in product leadership. It wasn't an easy choice, leaving behind my family, friends, and home of nearly 30 years. While that decision came with a lot of uncertainty, this moment has only reinforced my conviction that I want to be at the forefront of where Visa and our industry is headed. When I first chose to major in Finance years ago, it was because I wanted to be on the front lines helping build a more resilient financial system having grown up through the 2008 financial crisis. Today, as AI reshapes our industry and the broader economy, I feel that same sense of responsibility. I want to be where I can help build this technology thoughtfully, responsibly, and in ways that create lasting value for people. What stays with me isn't just their technical skill, though there's plenty of that. It's how consistently they showed up, thoughtful in how they solved problems, supportive with their teammates, and just genuinely cared about doing good work. That spans the full range - from junior engineers just building their careers to senior leaders who've shaped how teams around them operate. In May 2024, I was one of three finalists selected to compete in the Top Chef Challenge at the Vegan Women Summit. I was the only finalist who was not a professional chef. I created a dish unique and meaningful to me: "Dan Dan Manti," a Chinese-Turkish dish I made just for this competition. It reflects the culinary traditions of two countries that have a special place in my heart: China, where my parents immigrated from, and Turkey, a country I served as a U.S. diplomat in. The Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program is a fellowship program that provides funding for graduate-level students as they prepare academically and professionally to enter the U.S. Foreign Service.
The fellowship seeks to recruit talented students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. The goal is to attract outstanding students from all ethnic, racial, and social backgrounds who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career in the U.S. Department of State. The Program develops a source of trained men and women from academic disciplines representing the skill needs of the Department, who are dedicated to representing America's interests abroad.
The fellowship is funded by the U.S. Department of State and was previously administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

In the latest China Brief published by The Jamestown Foundation, I analyze several unusual patterns in the PLA’s military activities around Taiwan in 2025 and assess the potential implications of He Weidong’s removal and the PLA’s current emphasis on exploring new models of joint training. https://lnkd.in/giUDMirv This article covers similar themes to my earlier piece in 自由時報 （Liberty Times）, but places these developments within the broader context of the PLA’s overall trajectory in 2025. https://lnkd.in/gxqAssnn While PLA aircraft sorties and naval deployments around Taiwan reached new record highs over the course of the year, the rate of growth slowed compared to previous years. Notably, activity levels in the second half of 2025 were lower than in the first half—a pattern that differs from trends observed in 2023 and 2024—suggesting a shift in how the PLA plans and deploys forces around Taiwan. These changes likely reflect new developments in mid-2025, including a possible link between He Weidong’s downfall and adjustments in gray-zone pressure against Taiwan, as well as the impact of the PLA’s ongoing efforts to experiment with new joint training models on force deployments around the island. As I emphasized in my earlier Liberty Times article, this trend does not indicate a reduction in the PLA threat to Taiwan, and overall activity levels continue to rise. Rather, I focus on a frequently overlooked factor—the momentum of PLA activity growth—which highlights current constraints on PLA operations. Understanding these limitations, and their underlying causes, is critical for assessing Taiwan’s security environment. While many other military factors are relevant, they fall beyond the scope of this analysis. The key issue is that the PLA’s joint training remains at an early, exploratory stage. The most serious threat to Taiwan will emerge once the PLA succeeds in translating sustained joint training into a credible and mature joint operational capability for an invasion scenario.
