Sam Steyer reposted thisSam Steyer reposted thisAlways nice to see your company in the The Wall Street Journal. This time, a deep look at large load tariffs (particularly timely for data center builds) courtesy of the good work of Chris Schenker and the Halcyon data science team. "There are more than 190 cases across the country of utilities wrestling with things such as contract provisions, special rates or ways to charge giant customers, according to utility filings aggregated by AI startup Halcyon." Sam Steyer shared thisThis is a truly awesome product. One of the big challenges of adding battery energy storage to a home is the difficulty and expense of finding a really great electrician to do the install. Pila is a battery that the homeowner can just plug in themselves in between the outlet and a critical device like a refrigerator or modem/router. There are smany cases where homes need a bigger battery and in those cases, a great Electrician (like Northern Pacific Power Systems) is critical. And there are many cases with a simple product like Pila makes more sense.Sam Steyer shared thisPretty excited to unlock a whole new level of energy independence with my new Pila battery setup! We installed a whole home battery system in 2022, but ended up expanding new outlets to the garage to support a 2nd chest freezer last year. For a variety of logistical reasons this circuit did not sit in the back-up panel, which put this freezer at risk in an outage (no good!). We're facing a hot and windy summer, and season opener is coming soon, so the timing couldn't be better. I'm thrilled. It's also been a pleasure to watch Cole Ashman and team build Pila. Very excited to see where they go with this company.

Sam Steyer reposted thisSam Steyer reposted thisLike the rest of you energy nerds, we’ve been following Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's large load interconnection docket RM26-4-000 VERY closely. If you hadn’t heard, this morning, FERC issued tailored Section 206 show-cause orders to six regional grid operators — PJM Interconnection, Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), Southwest Power Pool, California ISO, ISO New England Inc., NYISO — all at once. These show cause orders effectively require the ISOs to take action to revise or justify existing rules (think OATTs, BTM/co-location rules, study processes) to ensure they can quickly and reliably integrate large loads. FERC retains jurisdiction while allowing the ISOs to put forth recommendations that suit their regions best. And with a 60-day timeline, they’re taking #speedtopower to heart. Now, however, there's no longer one large-load proceeding to follow. There are six (well, seven, really). The original ANOPR — Docket RM26-4-000 — is live on Halcyon platform now, along with a Curated Alert surfacing key developments. The six regional show-cause dockets went live on FERC's eLibrary today; they'll be on Halcyon very soon, ready to track the same way. This is quite literally what Halcyon was built for — tracking multiple, disparate proceedings as they develop. Check out the links below and we’ll let you know when we’ve got the six new dockets live. It won’t be long. Read the summary of FERC docket RM26-4-000: https://lnkd.in/gY-9gcAE Get updates on FERC docket RM26-4-000: https://lnkd.in/g-KJVgmi And check out our Large Load Tariff Tracker, which is quite relevant to making sense of all this: https://lnkd.in/ga9jYs7F

Sam Steyer reposted thisSam Steyer reposted thisHappy 1 year old to GPPT: What has changed, one year on? Magnitude, obviously, with more than three times as many tracked assets as a year ago. But, that expansion is due to both a massively expanding market, as well as an increasingly sophisticated Halcyon toolset to capture, identify, and classify assets across an expanding catalog of more than seven million regulatory documents ⚡ 🤓

Sam Steyer reposted thisSam Steyer reposted thisIn <2 years, Pila's gone from launching the plug-in battery concept to being the first to deliver this new product category to market. Anyone who's shipped hardware of this nature knows how rare that pace is – I'm incredibly proud of this team. This began as a vision to create a smart battery platform that works for 100% of homes. Realizing that vision has taken serious execution: countless design reviews, prototyping, certification testing to some of the toughest safety standards in the industry, firmware and software innovation.... Home batteries will be a default appliance in every home before this decade is out. We're not sitting back predicting that future -- we're shipping it. The modular Pila battery node is just step one 🚀 (Shoutout to the TELO Trucks crew for the delivery collab to some of our earliest customers in SF!)

Sam Steyer shared thisNarrative violation of the mistaken notion that people don’t care about Climate anymore. Also a true testament to the amazing work of Nan Ransohoff!Sam Steyer shared thisToday I’m thrilled to share that Google is doubling down on carbon removal, by joining Frontier's new advance market commitment of over $900 million to scale permanent CO2 removal technologies. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gPzGhs-B There are many reasons this is an exciting step for the planet. Here are just a few: ✅ Moving to scale. When we co-founded Frontier in 2022, long-duration carbon removal was mostly an idea - now, it’s a growing reality. This new resourcing will take the many concrete efforts already underway, spanning pathways from enhanced rock weathering through biomass carbon removal and storage, to full commercial scale. ✅ Growing the pie. This new commitment shows not only that Google is pressing fast-forward on carbon removal, but we’re doing so in a way that will continue to increase support for these solutions across both corporations and governments. Today, we’re especially excited to welcome Anthropic as a brand-new Frontier member. ✅ Anchoring a climate portfolio. It’s never been clearer that long-duration carbon removal is a vital complement to other levers for restoring the atmosphere, from superpollutant elimination to nature restoration. We’re excited to reaffirm these solutions at the center of our portfolio. A huge thanks to the team at Frontier and all our fellow members for the work in pushing this field forward - we can’t wait to take more big steps for the planet alongside you.

Sam Steyer liked thisSam Steyer liked thisDear Spindrift Beverage Co, Inc., I am writing to you on behalf of our office fridge, and frankly, on behalf of many office fridges in America. Please replace the lemon flavor in the 4-flavor pack. It is consistently neglected, and the subsequent buildup of lemon cans in our office fridge is concerning. Unsettling, even. My team members and I have resorted to drinking one every few days, begrudgingly, as part of our civic duty to reduce lemon spindrift buildup. We are outnumbered by these cans and at risk of coup. Raspberry Lime and Mango Orange go quickly, and Grapefruit is next best. Lemon stays on the shelves, perpetually. Nobody reaches for it on purpose. Please add a replacement flavor (we suggest Fiji Apple or Pineapple). Or perhaps, your team can implement a Spindrift swap service, so we can give our cans away to other offices in exchange for better flavors. We believe there is a market here. The people have spoken. Thank you for your consideration. Evidence attached below.

Today we’re launching the United States’ first hybrid electric, cost-competitive long-haul freight network. (Bloomberg article in comments.) You don’t see it on your credit card statement, but the average American spends $1,270/year on long-haul freight. Diesel prices at the pump are outrageous today: rising on both international price shocks and increasing domestic shale oil costs. And pure EV semis are somehow even more expensive to operate. We need a better solution, and Ian Rust figured it out. Revoy’s unique powered converter dolly lets us drop diesel usage by 95% and efficiently replace it with low-cost electricity. After two years of demonstrations and iterative improvements, we’re now taking the unique Revoy vehicle that we design and manufacture, and launching our hybrid-electric freight network with a select set of carriers. Shippers can reduce diesel consumption immediately on Revoy’s network without having to convince legacy carriers to convert their fleets, and without any investment in new infrastructure or equipment. We’re starting in the Pacific Northwest, with additional lanes planned. Ping us at revoy.com/contact-sales if you want to ship on our network or discuss opening new lanes. Sam Steyer liked thisSam Steyer liked thisOne year ago, Halcyon launched our Large Load Tariff Tracker. It was based on the belief that anyone trying to understand the changes occurring in the US electricity sector needed to start with how utilities are pricing data center load, and that there needed to be a comprehensive, regularly updated tool for doing so. Twelve months later, we now track 124 tariffs, 61 bilateral contracts, 15 frameworks, and 15 riders across 39 states, with more coming in every day. I wrote up a few observations from the last year for our blog this week: what trends we’ve noticed, what’s changed, and where we’ll go next. Link here: https://lnkd.in/dKHxTj5Y

Sam Steyer liked thisEnergy demand is climbing fast, and reliable power built and used in our local communities is a crucial piece of the answer. The DCE business unit becoming a standalone distributed generation platform under Goldman Sachs Alternatives will give us the ability to grow into that demand. Thank you to RWE for supporting DCE's foundation, to everyone who helped make this agreement possible - and to the team who will carry it forward. Excited for the tremendous opportunity ahead!Sam Steyer liked thisWe are pleased to announce that our Infrastructure team has acquired RWE's U.S. Distributed Clean Energy (DCE) business, establishing a leading standalone platform for commercial-scale renewable energy. The transaction marks a milestone investment in the U.S. distributed generation market at a time when surging power demand and grid decentralization are driving an unprecedented need for localized renewable energy. The platform is uniquely positioned to deliver value to communities across the U.S. in response to the growing need for rapid, reliable, and sustainable capacity. Ever wonder how climate founders get the best terms on their equity rounds? We've found they're engineering their capital stacks. They blend customer commitments, early revenue, LOIs, offtakes, grants, project debt, and equity into one cohesive plan. Why? Hardware isn’t software. Plants, batteries, charging networks are capital-heavy and investors want proof before they pour in fuel. Here's our playbook we share with our partners: 1. Revenue: the original non-dilutive capital. Paid pilots and early sales tightened our unit economics and cut dilution. 2. LOIs & Offtakes: contracted future revenue. They anchored pricing and made growth financeable. 3. Grants & Subsidies: de-risk the technology. They extended runway and made every equity dollar go 2–3× further. 4. Project Debt: scale without dilution. Once customers were lined up and the math worked, lenders funded assets, not your cap table. 5. Equity: used twice, with intent. Early: a small dose to recruit the team, ship the prototype, and hit real proof. Later: once leverage existed, to accelerate milestones — not to finance assets. Our takeaway: Equity is often the most expensive money you’ll take. The better you manage revenue, contracts, grants, and debt, the cheaper that equity becomes. If you’re building in climate tech today: Are you raising a round, or engineering a stack? ClimateDoor

The Go Fractional team recently interviewed William Whatley, a 30 under 30 honoree, CTO, and founder, focusing on the dynamics of scaling, the necessity of system building, and where the next wave of technological value will be created. I want to highlight a few key topics: - The Value of the Fractional CTO: Will's thesis that technical differentiation is no longer the main priority for early startups, making fractional expertise an even more strategic choice. - Climate Tech and the Energy Backbone: His early focus on solar energy and how electrifying everything with renewable energy is the most fundamental solution to current emissions problems. - The Next Frontier in AI (Robotics): Why the real value unlock isn't just in LLMs, but in VLAs (Vision Language Action models) that connect AI to the physical world. If you're a founder defining your technical strategy or looking for non-obvious growth levers, don't miss this talk! Watch the full session here: https://lnkd.in/eyknk5z9
