From that idea, she founded Digital Women of Kansas City (DWKC). What started as small meetups has now grown into a thriving community that has supported, inspired, and advanced the careers of many. This month, DWKC proudly celebrates its 10-year anniversary with the 2025 MiniCon, where Melissa will return as the keynote speaker. Her talk, “More Than Our Job Titles: The Power of Showing Up,” perfectly embodies what DWKC has stood for from the beginning. I am incredibly proud of what she started, how it has expanded under the leadership of so many remarkable women, and the positive impact it continues to have on the tech and digital communities. Steve Green liked thisThe architect role changes based on what the organization is missing. That’s why the role is so hard to define. In one company, the architect is mostly designing systems. In another, they are pulled into delivery problems. Yet in another, they are aligning business, product, engineering, security, infrastructure, and leadership around a direction nobody fully agrees on yet. Same title but completely different jobs. Over the years, I’ve noticed that architects often expand into the gaps an organization has not learned how to handle well. For example: 🧭 If the organization lacks technical direction, the architect becomes the strategist. Helping answer: - Where are we going technically? - What should we invest in? - What should we stop doing? - Which decisions will matter 2 or 3 years from now? 🏗 If the organization lacks engineering maturity, the architect becomes the coach. Often the problem is not the architecture diagram. It is how teams build, test, deploy, operate, and evolve software. The architect helps raise the quality of decisions across teams. 🧑🏫 If the organization lacks alignment, the architect becomes the translator. - Business wants one thing. - Product interprets it another way. - Engineering sees constraints. - Security sees risk. - Operations sees support burden. The architect translates between these different realities and turns them into something people can act on. ⚖️ If the organization lacks decision discipline, the architect becomes the trade-off maker. Some organizations don’t lack options. They lack the ability to choose between them. - Every decision causes "analysis paralysis" - Every team optimizes locally. - The system slowly becomes a museum of unresolved trade-offs. The architect helps make those trade-offs explicit. 🛡 If the organization lacks standards, the architect becomes the governance builder. Good governance creates clarity and useful guardrails. Bad governance creates friction and theatre. The architect’s job is not to create rules. It is to create useful constraints that help teams move faster while reigning in chaos. 🚨 If the organization lacks delivery confidence, the architect becomes the risk reducer. They ask the uncomfortable questions: - What could break? - What are we assuming? - What dependencies are hidden? - What needs to be sequenced differently? This is why two architects with the same title can have completely different jobs. Because architects rarely operate in a clean and well-defined box. They are operating in the gaps: - Between strategy and execution - Between business ambition and engineering reality - Between what the organization wants to do and what it is actually capable of doing. So when people ask, "What does an architect actually do?" The honest answer is: It depends what the organization is missing. And the better you understand that gap…the better you understand what kind of architect the organization actually needs.

Seeing first hand how Straive builds POCs in days blew me away and and what got me excited was what this means for clients - they can iterate, adapt, and move toward production in weeks - this is the kind of speed clients need, especially now. Looking forward to getting started next week!

My time at Perficient was no different. From Perficient's Accelerate conference and multiple Microsoft conferences, to hosting clients at the Microsoft Innovation Hub and Cardinals games, and of course meeting with clients across the country. I walked away from each event with deeper relationships and new connections - I have yet to meet a stranger ;) While this chapter has come to a close, I'm looking forward to starting my next adventure very soon...stay tuned for an update next week! To my colleagues, clients, and partners I had the opportunity to work with, learn from, and laugh with along the way: thank you for the support, the collaboration, the trust, and the friendship. To my team: we accomplished so much together! We traveled together, overcame challenges, elevated our game, and built something worth being proud of - not just the AI-first videos, demos, or frontier firm webinars, but something intangible that I will carry with me.
