Last year, I had the chance to attend the Black Women in Venture Capital retreat, a space for Black women to learn and uplift each other in an industry where women hold only ~20% of decision-making roles in VC firms. This year and always, let’s continue to support the development of the next generation of venture capital managers! Reese (Teresa) Danso-Danquah shared thisGraduating from Harvard Business School was the highlight of my 2024! I was honored to be selected as a recipient of the Dean’s Award, for leadership and impact on the HBS community (see link for press release in comments). Here are 3 lessons I learned over the past two years: ✅ Run your race at your own pace People come to business school for a variety of reasons and career paths and it’s easy to get swept up in following someone else’s path. I made goals at the beginning of my first year that I came back to periodically throughout the program to make sure I stayed aligned. ✅ Opportunities to learn don’t just come from cases and course materials While HBS is renowned for its professors and business cases, I learned equally as much from my classmates who worked in so many of the leading companies across the world. Taking time to grab coffee with classmates to learn about their background and experiences prior to business school was invaluable. ✅ Say yes to new leadership opportunities Co-leading the African American Student Union at Harvard Business School’s Black New Venture Competition was a hard yet rewarding journey. Raising $200K in non-dilutive capital from leading VCs and investors gave me a glimpse of the VC fundraising process. Running the competition exposed me to hundreds of talented Black founders across the US. It’s comfortable to sit on the sidelines, but harder to roll up your sleeves and try something new. 💼 In August, I started my post-MBA career at Cambridge Associates as an Investment Director focused on diverse and emerging venture capital managers. I’m grateful for my time at HBS where I focused on VC and entrepreneurship for preparing me to take this next step in my career. Reese (Teresa) Danso-Danquah shared thisOne of the many programs I’m grateful for in my pivot into VC is VC University, a joint educational initiative by National Venture Capital Association, Venture Forward, and Berkeley Law Executive Education. It’s an online course providing the fundamentals of venture capital in both the finance behind it and the startup ecosystem it supports. But more than that, VC University operates a #scholarship program for #underrepresented folks trying to pivot into the space. I got to participate in the program in June 2021 and enjoyed the added sessions, #mentorship, and guidance throughout the course. Today’s the last day to apply for a scholarship for Cohort 15. Reese (Teresa) Danso-Danquah shared thisBack to the Beginning: the First Day of Business School Each year, I spend the month of November in #gratitude and #reflection of how far I’ve come and all who have helped me in my journey. Lately, I’ve been thinking about the first day of #HBS and the goals I had for doing an MBA. A year later, I can confirm that my intentions are still the same: I want to be a founder and VC investor that builds with and invests in communities currently at the margin of society. The Black, disabled, and queer communities raised, mentored, and grew with me. Yet, these are communities that receive less than 1% of VC funding, not to mention the hardships in getting small business grants and loans. As a Black, disabled, nonbinary student, I’m using my time at HBS to learn how I can leverage venture capital for good. And along the way, I’m learning how to be well and do well in spaces not built for people like me. A select few aren't. Last year, our team at Commonweal Ventures set out to map them and published the #AmTech 76: a list of 76 venture funds investing in defense, energy, infrastructure, healthcare, and other sectors where startups engage with government early as a customer, regulator, or partner. We built it to help founders find VCs who understand the nuances of building companies that intersect with government. A lot has changed in a year. New funds have launched, existing funds have raised larger vehicles, and there are funds we missed the first time around. So we're building the 2026 edition. We're tracking who is investing, at what stage, and in which sectors. And we're adding something new: a spotlight on the top #AmTech startups that raised a round this year. We need your nominations. Reese (Teresa) Danso-Danquah reacted on thisReese (Teresa) Danso-Danquah reacted on thisLast week marked one year since my beloved father passed away. I learned that my father was ill with pancreatic cancer on the evening of my graduation from Harvard in May 2024. When I moved back to NYC, my primary role became that of a caretaker. I dove in headfirst—not only to help coordinate his treatment, but to live fully alongside him while we could. Somehow, I still made space for my career. I remember doing remote interviews in hospital hallways and negotiating my job offer in between calls with oncologists. I deliberately chose a role that afforded me the flexibility to be present. During that time, I was more resilient than I knew possible—but I was simply following the example of the strongest man I have ever known, as he faced a ruthless disease with relentless enthusiasm for life. Only recently has grief given way to a sense of satisfaction in how we walked that journey together. Helping a loved one transition with dignity is difficult, but deeply meaningful work. Today, I reflect on his memory and aim to live in a way that honors his legacy. This holiday season, I’m committing to prioritizing quality time with the people I love and remaining grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given. I’m deeply appreciative of the personal and professional community that has supported me over the past year and a half—and continues to do so. As #ClimateWeekNYC 2025 approaches, we at CCSP are proud to highlight one of our ongoing initiatives: ✨ Climate Justice Through Community and Arts-Based Research: Building Collaborative Solutions for Marginalized Communities on Long Island, ✨ supported by a Seed Grant from SBU’s Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR). Led by Desai Manisha (Sociology/WGSS), Christopher Sellers (History), Kathleen Fallon (Sociology), and Linda O'Keeffe (Art), this project brings together social scientists, humanists, and—most importantly—our community partners, the Long Island Progressive Coalition and ERASE Racism, to examine how climate change and inequality intersect on Long Island. At its core, the work is grounded in ecofeminist, participatory, and arts-based methodologies—centering deep listening and co-creation with the communities most impacted by environmental injustice. Together, we are building sustained, justice-centered research and laying the foundation for long-term, community-driven solutions to climate challenges.
