I was in charge of creating the logo for their 20th anniversary, so I designed this logo below, which I thought was pretty good. However, I ended up being locked out of my account and got told my logo was "not minimalistic". I'm now looking for roles in software engineering and product design for the summer :) I will be using Scouty to help me find events at Toronto tech week in order to find a new job and get back on my feet!

A lot of us who had the privilege to work with him feel that he always left a lasting mark on every single piece of software he had ever touched. Shuangyang was not only a talented engineer but also a dedicated mentor and leader, always ready to help his colleagues—whether it was solving technical problems or supporting their career growth. His kindness, wisdom, and generosity made a difference in the lives of many, and his absence will be deeply felt by everyone who knew him. Tragically, Shuangyang passed away suddenly, leaving behind his wife, Mrs. Yang, a stay-at-home mom, and their 13-year-old daughter, who requires ongoing health insurance for her condition. With Shuangyang's passing, the family has lost their steady source of income and the security of health coverage, making this already heartbreaking time even more challenging. We are all hardworking families striving for a brighter future for our children. A sudden, significant loss like this is devastating, but by chipping in, we can help make the process a little less painful for Shuangyang's family. Defining the problem (what needs to be solved) and asking clarifying questions. What does this help you do? - Build your approach - Confirm/dis-confirm your assumptions - Identify important edge cases and code limitations - Justify your decisions with technical depth - Work towards an optimal solution DO NOT jump into implementation without understanding what you're solving. You will struggle and miss important requirements derailing your success. This may seem trivial or common sense, but it's the backbone fundamental to solving any problem you may face at Amazon. Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of what our team accomplished in Responsible AI—from advancing AI guardrails and governance to helping deliver trustworthy AI capabilities across Oracle products. It has been a privilege to work on technology that helps make AI more responsible, reliable, and ready for the enterprise. A heartfelt thank you to Sujith Ravi, Dan Roth, Yassine Benajiba, Sujeeth Bharadwaj, Miguel Ballesteros, Fahad Shah, Jun Qian for your leadership, trust, mentorship, and support throughout this journey. To My Team Mohammad Kachuee, Mohammad Niknazar, Phu Mon Htut, Sheng Li, Nikolaos Pappas, Amit Singh, Joydeb Mondal, Vijay Varma: thank you for every whiteboard session, every technical debate, every launch, and every laugh. Xiaosong Lu liked thisXiaosong Lu liked thisI recently learned about the Power Law in venture investing, and it completely changed how I interpret an experience I had before. The Power Law says that in venture investing, most investments will fail or generate modest returns, while a very small number of companies produce returns greater than all the others combined. This means success isn't about avoiding risk on every investment. It's about identifying the rare companies that can become category-defining businesses. As a software engineer originally from China, I once attended a talk by someone who had spent over a decade working in venture capital in China. She described a difference she observed between Chinese VC investors and American angel investors. In her experience, Chinese investors often focused discussions on ROI and financial returns, while American investors were more likely to ask founders questions like: "What's your dream?" "What industry do you want to revolutionize?" At the time, I thought this was simply a cultural difference. After learning about the Power Law, I see another explanation. If only a handful of startups will generate the vast majority of returns, investors need to identify founders pursuing opportunities with the potential to create outsized outcomes. Questions about vision, ambition, and the size of the problem aren't just inspirational. Those help assess whether a company could become one of those rare outliers that drive an entire fund's performance. This also made me reflect on China's venture ecosystem over the past decade. One possible reason some investors appeared less focused on Power Law outcomes is the prevalence of the "Copy to China" model. Rather than creating entirely new markets, many startups adapted successful business models that had already been validated elsewhere. That approach may have offered a more predictable path to attractive returns with lower execution risk, even if it was less dependent on finding a revolutionary creator. Learning the Power Law has changed how I think about venture investing. It's not just about finding good companies. It's about identifying the very few companies that can reshape industries and generate venture-scale returns. Alphabet revenue grew 24% YoY and Google Cloud accelerated to 82% growth. We saw exciting momentum across the board from Search to YouTube to the Gemini app (which reached 950M monthly active users). Our model APIs are processing 22B tokens/min (up from 16B+ last quarter) driven by our workhorse Flash models. We’re also seeing great adoption of Gemini Enterprise, used by 90% of the Fortune 100, as well as strong demand for our security solutions. Not really sure why some days are so easy and others are so hard. Maybe something to do with diet. Speaking of diet, I've been getting really into homemade seitan lately. Thinking of mixing in some lysine powder to make up for the incomplete amino acid profile. Chickpea flour sounded good but is too caloric. Air fryer has been awesome though! After my time at WiseTech Global building enterprise logistics software, I'm excited to continue growing in the logistics and supply chain industry from a new perspective. One of the things I've enjoyed most throughout my career is learning not just the technology, but the business behind it. Understanding how software helps solve real customer problems has always made engineering more meaningful to me, and I'm looking forward to continuing that journey at C.H. Robinson. What stood out most on my first day wasn't just the technology or the projects; it was the people. From the moment I arrived, everyone took the time to welcome me, help me get set up, introduce themselves, and make me feel like part of the team. That kind of culture leaves a strong first impression, and I'm grateful for such a warm start. I'm excited to be joining a talented team that's building new products with modern .NET, React, cloud technologies, and AI-assisted development. There's a lot to learn, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute while continuing to grow as both an engineer and a problem solver. Xiaosong Lu liked thisXiaosong Lu liked thisAttending SciPy Conference this year was a refreshing experience in more ways than one. #SciPy2026 For the first time, I attended a conference where the main venue was filled with natural light. It may seem like a small detail, but spending the day in bright, sunlit spaces at the University of Minnesota made the conference feel surprisingly energizing. I had the opportunity to give my talk, “Building for the Road Ahead: Transferable Lessons from the Front Lines of Open Source Maintenance”, where I shared lessons I've learned from over 10 years of maintaining and leading open source projects. What made it especially memorable was that my session was immediately followed by Hadley Wickham's talk on lessons from his 20 years of experience - in the very same room. Another highlight was reconnecting with my former colleague, James Lamb. About ten years ago, I introduced James to the world of open source and helped him make his first contribution. It was incredibly rewarding to catch up and see how far he's come since then. Today he's a maintainer of LightGBM and has become a respected contributor across the open source ecosystem. Seeing that journey come full circle was one of my favorite moments of the conference. My talk focused on something I believe doesn't get discussed enough: maintaining successful open source projects isn't just about writing code. It's about building healthy communities, making sustainable decisions, and creating projects that can thrive long after the initial excitement.
