Imo the challenge is that tv (esp cable) news makes it hard to say you're not an expert/have nothing valuable to say abt something in a world where even really smart ppl don't have thoughtful or insightful things to say about close to 100% of topics. Makes for a tough format.

TV news is an extremely weird medium, even as compared to other media. The closest analogy is to acting. I don't think it contributes much value. But "only people with TV experience should get TV jobs" is just such a weird position for any sort of professional writer to defend.
