What does it take for a Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) to become a thriving community-owned enterprise? For many emerging FPOs, the journey is filled with challenges. Limited working capital, constrained access to affordable finance, evolving leadership, and weak business systems often make it difficult to move beyond the early stages of growth. Balancing multiple business activities while maintaining profitability and attracting skilled professionals with limited resources can create a cycle that is hard to break. Yet, the aspirations are far greater than the challenges. Emerging FPOs envision building robust, end-to-end value chains around high-potential commodities, from production and aggregation to processing and market linkages. They aspire to strengthen rural retail markets, expand B2B and B2C channels, increase turnover, and, most importantly, create sustainable enterprises that deliver greater value to smallholder farmers. Achieving this requires more than finance. It calls for strategic investments in institutional capacity, business planning, governance, market linkages, professional leadership, and access to timely working capital. With support from the Walmart Foundation, PRADAN is strengthening emerging FPOs while nurturing nodal FPOs that can anchor local ecosystems, enabling knowledge sharing, stronger market connections, shared services, and greater collaboration among community-owned institutions. Together, this ecosystem approach is helping FPOs build resilient businesses that can unlock long-term opportunities for farming communities. At Bharat Tex 2026, the WomenArt project by PRADAN in collaboration with the European Union showcased how tribal women are carrying centuries-old traditions into the future, preserving cultural heritage while building sustainable livelihoods. WomenArt intends to transform tribal crafts from Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar into high-value, culturally rooted products with strong market potential, building women-led enterprises where underserved tribal artisans blend heritage with entrepreneurship through branding, design, and digital innovation. It was a privilege to engage with Shri K. S. Rejimon, Joint Secretary, NITI Aayog, and share insights from IndusInd Bank's Holistic Rural Development Program (HRDP) a flagship initiative aligned with the Aspirational Districts Programme. Spanning five districts - Dharashiv, Begusarai, Bahraich, Virudhunagar and Baran: across 1,700+ villages, the programme has reached over 138,000 rural households, demonstrating how integrated investments in water security, climate-resilient agriculture, livelihoods, entrepreneurship, women's empowerment and institution building can drive sustainable rural transformation. The results are encouraging: 26%–33% growth in household incomes, strengthened community institutions, enhanced convergence with government schemes, and scalable models that place communities at the centre of development. Anchored in our belief that "Good Ecology is Good Economics," the program reflects the power of partnerships in advancing resilient and inclusive growth. As India progresses towards the vision of Viksit Bharat, such collaborative models offer valuable lessons for creating sustainable pathways out of multidimensional poverty and strengthening rural prosperity. PRADAN organised and participated in the National Fish Farmers' Day celebrations across multiple locations in Chhattisgarh through the collective efforts of partner CSOs, the Department of Fisheries, Government of Chhattisgarh, and the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar & Aajeevika Mission (Gramin). The celebration served as an important platform to discuss the growing role of fisheries in strengthening rural livelihoods and building resilient communities. Participants explored how fish farming can emerge as a sustainable livelihood option while ensuring the productive utilisation of farm ponds developed under the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar & Aajeevika Mission (Gramin). The discussions highlighted the multiple benefits of integrated fish farming, including diversifying livelihoods and enhancing household incomes, improving nutrition through greater access to protein-rich food, and promoting the productive use of farm ponds while strengthening water storage, climate resilience, and sustainable water resource management. The technical sessions focused on scientific and sustainable fish farming practices, covering farm pond management, water quality testing and monitoring, pre- and post-stocking management, feed management with an emphasis on regenerative and locally available feed preparation practices, fish disease prevention and management, and sustainable pond management for improved productivity. Participants also received detailed information on government initiatives supporting fisheries development, including schemes and incentives offered by the Department of Fisheries, opportunities for convergence with various line departments, fish farmer registration, insurance coverage, and access to credit and input support to promote fish-based livelihoods. The celebration reinforced the importance of collaboration among communities, CSOs, and government departments in advancing aquaculture. By integrating fisheries with existing water conservation assets, such partnerships can pave the way for improved nutrition, enhanced incomes, greater climate resilience, and rural development. Through the WomenArt Project, PRADAN with support from European Union, is facilitating women artisan producer groups to participate in Bharat Tex 2026, one of India's premier global textile and craft exhibitions. The platform will connect women-led enterprises with domestic and international buyers, designers, brands, and industry leaders, creating opportunities to showcase the remarkable craftsmanship emerging from rural India. For many of these artisans, this is more than an exhibition. It is a chance to understand evolving market expectations, receive direct feedback on product design, quality, pricing, and positioning, and build meaningful B2B relationships that can translate into sustained market access. Beyond visibility, the initiative is designed to strengthen the market readiness of artisan producer institutions by generating insights that inform future product development, enterprise planning, and business strategy. At PRADAN, we believe that when women artisans gain access to markets, information, and networks, they don't just sell products—they build resilient enterprises, strengthen local economies, and shape more inclusive value chains.
