I go back and forth with how active I want to be in the world, day by the day. I feel like I have seized the moment for what really matters, but it’s a very strange time and being too visible has its downsides in real life.
I have had a kind of “on and off “ way of living in public. I worked really hard the last two years and my major goals for both my work and my civic engagement have succeeded beyond my wildest dreams. It’s by far the fast that my contrarian bets became consensus.
I am however tired. I had a challenging July health wise, and even my small silly projects felt beyond my grasp. Like can’t a girl even have a silly “buy some workwear and see if there is anything good on the market” experiment for a blog post?
I want to be basic and find hidden winners in the market of aesthetics, but I also want record some market work. Where are the duds? What isn’t working in the market?
My idea to build a capsule wardrobe from zero with one giant premium mediocre startup brand was actually way more work than I realized.
Quince has a lot of inventory and it is not all close to usable for my needs. Brands once had either points of voice. Or they are vehicles for what sells and then it is up to you to find something with value within what’s salable.

It’s amusing to have spent so much time bouncing from brand to brand in my past, that still my own personal preference remains the staid Ann Taylor. If you want to drift into the background of a professional situation, you need a blazer. Linen for summer if you don’t want to scare anyone. You can have outlandish opinions only when in a decent knit.
I enjoy a schism off of True Prep that is basic prime. Revealing as it is crass and clear. loved my time at every American brand from the mass Gap to the empire off Ralph Lauren & Club Monaco. I got to do menswear collaborations with classic workwear brands while also seeing Nike take over running.
I saw a lot of workwear, and the outfits different generations wear when in recreation. Even in its most aspirational form, American clothing has been about what worked at work for the Americans at work. Take it back to Clare McCardle’s housedress pattern or any standard issue item from the Army.
I saw so much of we have admired over the years from denim and folk rock hippie classics to Wall Street suits and the many forms of glamorous pastimes from horses & tennis to egalitarian running. American dressing has had a heritage of producing style basics because Americans worked and played hard
We have changed so much about what we aspire to over the years. What women admire in a brand and what men admire are different and yet some of our greats have always managed an aesthetic of being likable to men and women.
And as I get myself back to maintaining a wardrobe that doesn’t get in the way I find that part of American workwear that once worked for me is gone.
So let’s see if the most global manufacturing of techniques and sourcing can make me look like an American woman that just gets on with her life. What is the pricing on just mass enough to survive? Where it misses on quality and sourcing you might even remember yourself as a shopper of these brands
I’ve worked up and down the price tiers of American retail from mass to malls to niches and long term trendiness. It’s strange to have things flattened to some kind of mass market aspirational knock off arbitrage for aspiring to good taste. That is the stuff of the middle class. And do we even have that anymore? Is everyone outsourcing taste to The Cut and WireCutter?
I guess while I’m trying to rest, I’m failing at finding good picks in the mass market economy of all access and no editorial. Of course, there is going to be a few duds. You think Walmart doesn’t launch a turd? It’s mostly hard to find winners for consumer goods.
But I am feeling good about the leather goods and accessories so far. So I have some candidates for travel accessories if you wear suits. Because I guess we have to suit up again.
