I have absolutely no memory of having “an audience” when I was a child. The idea that one ever had to think about being perceived is far too an abstract an idea for a six year old. and I’m very grateful for it.
But at some point not only do we teach children that others are perceiving them we reinforce it aggressively. Usually somewhere between middle school and high school you realize everyone is constantly perceiving you.
Boys used to get a longer horizon on this but we’ve always made it essential for girls to realize they are being perceived. Girls pick up this lesson and rely on social graced generally a year or so beyond boys. Such is the reward for maturing faster. Mature is a lovely euphemism for learning the world doesn’t resolve around you and you better learn to give it something it wants even if it’s just not being a dick.
I am convinced this single lesson that has caused the most social alarm. It may even be why everyone is so angry at social media. It is damaging to always be performing and the longer you put this off the better. You need to reinforce the self before it becomes something that serves the other.
Being perceived as an object isn’t ideal for either sex but that’s going to take longer to sink in. We’ve known it’s a problem for girl certainly since we got upset about magazine covers but it really took off once everyone produces media as soon as they get to school. Must have been nice to put that off until you debuted to society.
I don’t think the anger has nothing to do with the addictions of the algorithms or the bad behaviors of the rent seeking technology conglomerates. We’ve had bad habits and rent seeking for sometimes.
I’m not even confident people had a conception of the cost of compute or data services till someone thought to link it to Facebook.
Rather than be angry at elites for bad behavior we are angry that regular people reward bad behavior and as soon as you realize you have an audience you play to it.
And now that we use audiences and not actively demographics to decide who runs things this is a a problem. We are all simply angry that we raised a performative generation versus an action oriented one.
And while its easy to blame it on whoever makes the media we have a world now that people generate the media for others that may or may not even exist.. Now we make the media ourselves it’s a problem. So who to blame if it’s not Vogue but Google? Sure fair enough. Whoever reached the largest audience.
Now everyone is making media and talking to audiences from the moment we give them a phone we find out sometimes your friend group isn’t always relational but is in fact transactional.
Of course we have problems with this as all our treasured cultural tradition rely on the golden rule. Treat others as they treat you. That works when others treat you well but what if they hate you. If everyone hates each other it’s even worse. No wonder media theorists are always on the edge of probity.
My make take away from this entire cycle of everyone making media and being perceived is that if there is one iron law of performance it is that you should never talk down to your audience.
Because an audience is ultimately made of people who do want a relationship instead of a transactional one. If they think you can be bought they do not trust you. If they think you are pandering to them or believe them to be stupid they can tell. Your mother was right when she told you to treat everyone nicely.
If you look down on someone they can tell. If you think you are not beholden to the same rules as them. Guess what they can also tell. And that’s my short lesson on being persuasive to people.
You are not an object to be traded. You are a person who relates to other people and there is no price that can be put on that. Maybe you offer others values to people from labor to service or simply binding together on faith. Whatever it is do it as a person and not a performer. You are a human being first.
