In the West, including Colorado, 82% of homeowners polled who said they installed solar panels within the past five years would recommend the company they used to family or friends, according to a Forbes Home survey. As you look for the best solar companies in Colorado, our deep dive into the options based on extensive research and advice from experts can help point you in the right direction.

“A solar system is only as good as the company that installs it,” says Greg Field, owner and senior consultant at Arizona-based PGT Home Energy Solutions. “Be wary of high-pressure sales tactics or promises that sound too good to be true.”

Why We Picked It

Tesla’s compelling price-match guarantee makes it a great option to include in your search for solar companies. As a manufacturer, Tesla also stands out with its sleek panel designs and highly rated Tesla Powerwall solar battery. Tesla uses a large network of third-party installers, which leads to its availability in remote or rural areas. In fact, Tesla customers were more likely than those from any other company to say they decided to use the company because of experience with installations in their area.

Learn more: Tesla Solar review

Pros & Cons
  • Solar roof and Powerwall options
  • Broad installation availability
  • Price-match guarantee
  • No leases or PPAs
  • Exclusive to Tesla products
  • Limits customer choice of installer
Customer Survey

At 78%, Tesla had a below-average rate of customers saying they would recommend the company to family or friends. Feedback on reliability suggests that it could be a factor, with only 76% saying they considered the panels to be durable. However, Tesla was right on par with the average in terms of how many repairs customers actually needed since their panels were installed.

How Much Does a Solar System Cost in Colorado?

Nationwide, the average cost of solar panels goes from $7,700 for small systems to $34,700 for large systems. Incentives like tax credits and rebates can lower costs. The average cost for solar inverters is $350 to $3,200 while the average cost for a solar battery is $1,700 to $9,000. These aren’t essential for solar panel functions but are popular add-ons.

In our survey, customers in the West, including Colorado, reported spending an average of $25,511.80 on their solar panels and installation. This is about $460 less than the average costs across all regions.

Solar Panel Cost Factors

The cost to install solar panels in Colorado is affected by a number of factors that are unique to households.

System Size

The size of a solar panel system that is appropriate for your needs makes the biggest difference to overall cost. For that reason, Field suggests getting at least three quotes and comparing them on a “cost per watt” basis. In the United States, the average price per watt is $2.55 to $3.15. In Colorado, it’s on the higher side, coming to $3.13 per watt. For a moderate 8 kW system, that translates to $25,040 including installation before incentives are considered.

Equipment

The type of solar panels also affects costs, with rates per watt ranging from $0.30 to $1. On the lower cost side, monocrystalline or P-type panels are durable and backed by good warranties, but not as efficient as premium panels. N-type panels cost about $0.80 to $1 per watt and have higher efficiency rates.

Preparation or Modification

Before installing solar panels, first consider the condition of your roof and address repairs before moving ahead. Many solar installation companies offer roof repair services, but these can add to the cost. There could be additional costs for modifications depending on tree services or if the pitch of your roof requires more installation labor.

Company

Even for comparably sized systems and materials, rates from companies can vary. Field recommends getting multiple quotes based on consultations at your property. He explains, “A trustworthy quote will clearly break down all costs, the specific equipment used and provide a realistic energy production estimate.”

Solar Incentives in Colorado

When evaluating the costs of solar panels, be sure to consider tax credits, rebates or other incentives you could be eligible for. Some programs require specific steps, so it’s essential to be aware of the procedures before moving ahead with installation. Certain incentives are applied only once, while others can lead to ongoing savings. Fortunately for Coloradans, state and local programs are among the best solar incentives in the country.

Federal Incentives

The Federal Solar Tax Credit (previously known as the Investment Tax Credit or ITC) offers solar customers a credit equivalent to 30% of the material and labor costs of their solar panels. This can only be used to lower a tax bill, not paid out as a refund in cash. But when maximized, this is an excellent way to bring down the all-in costs of solar panels. For example, if pre-incentive solar panels cost $10,000, the overall cost is $7,000 after receiving a $3,000 tax credit.

Colorado Incentives

In Colorado, solar panels, inverters and other system components are exempt from the state sales tax—which is about 2.9%—although city or county sales tax rates may apply. Solar improvements on a residence are also exempt from causing an increase in property taxes. These incentives don’t outright lower the cost of solar panels, but they do lessen the “hidden costs” that apply in many other states.

The state of Colorado mandates that all utility companies with more than 5,000 customers offer net metering for solar users who are tied to the grid. Credits for excess energy may be rolled over indefinitely. This effectively reduces or eliminates monthly electricity bills even during seasons when solar panels aren’t as productive.

Local Incentives

In Colorado, many city, county and utility companies offer incentives to eligible users in the region. For example, Xcel Energy, the largest utility company in Colorado, offers a rebate of up to $1 per watt for income-qualified households. On a city level, Denver has a Home Energy Rebate program that offers a flat amount back for the installation of solar panels. This can be stacked with other rebates. However, the program seems to hit its limit quickly after applications open; it closed in March for 2025.

Your solar installer should be well-versed in incentives available in your specific area. When screening companies, it could be a red flag if one doesn’t seem knowledgeable about incentives.
