Momentum Solar landed as the best solar company in Massachusetts because of its generous warranties, with a 25-year equipment warranty and a 25-year workmanship warranty. While most solar installation companies offer workmanship warranties of around 10 years, Momentum Solar’s warranties really set it apart and add peace of mind to Massachusetts homeowners looking to install solar panels.

The main downside to Momentum Solar is that it doesn’t openly share the type of solar panels it carries on its website, making it hard to know ahead of time the value of the products. Consumers in our survey also weren’t as satisfied with the customer service they received pre-installation, which could pose a problem for anyone looking for clear information before work begins.

Pros & Cons
  • 25-year workmanship warranty
  • Offers three financing methods
  • Slightly lower average cost than competitors
  • Vague about solar equipment sold
  • Lower customer satisfaction with services
Customer Survey

We surveyed 1,000 homeowners who have purchased solar panels in the past five years, and of those respondents who chose Momentum Solar, 26% said that the cost of their solar system was lower than their initial quote. Consumers also reported spending around $400 less on their system compared to the average.

However, only 62% said that they were very satisfied (eight out of 10 or higher) with the customer service they received in the pre-installation stage, and 58% said that their monthly electric bill decreased by more than $50, slightly lower than average.

Qcells has a reputation for providing some of the highest efficiency solar panels on the market, with an efficiency rating of 22.5% for its most powerful residential solar panel. The average efficiency rating across all solar panels in our research was 21.33%, with efficiency ratings ranging from 17.45% to 26.6%. The company designs and manufactures its own solar panels and has risen to the top for its widespread manufacturing and excellent customer service.

While Qcells is a big-name manufacturer, it does not directly install solar panels. If you want to install Qcells solar panels, then you’ll need to work with a local third-party installation company. Another downside to Qcells is that the company only offers three residential solar panel options. Some competitors carry a variety of solar panels from different manufacturers to provide a more customizable solar panel system.

Learn more: Qcells review

Pros & Cons
  • Carries high-performing solar panels
  • Widespread availability
  • Excellent customer satisfaction
  • No in-house installation team
  • Limited residential inventory
Customer Survey

In our customer survey, Qcells scored the highest of all of the top solar companies for customer satisfaction and likelihood to recommend to friends and family members, with 78% and 72% of respondents saying they were very satisfied and likely to recommend (eight out of 10 or more), respectively.

Sunrun won the title of best for solar leases and PPAs because it offers a unique, in-house subscription plan that combines qualities of a solar lease and purchase power agreement (PPA). The company’s solar lease has locked-in rates and a 25-year equipment guarantee, along with free maintenance and repairs during those 25 years, allowing you to rent solar panels without the maintenance and upkeep that comes with solar ownership.

The main downside to Sunrun is that consumers in our survey were least likely to recommend the company to friends or family, which may suggest that Sunrun customers weren’t pleased with their experience with the company.

Learn more: Sunrun review

Pros & Cons
  • Low cost
  • Fewer unexpected fees
  • Reliable equipment
  • Least likely to be recommended to friends and family in our survey
  • Doesn’t carry inverters
Customer Survey

Sunrun customers reported spending around $21,775 on their solar panel system, which is over $4,000 less than the average cost across the board. Additionally, only 38% of customers said that they experienced unexpected fees from the installation company, compared to 50% or higher in the other companies that made it on our list. Surprisingly, though, 12% of homeowners said that installing Sunrun panels did not reduce their electric bills. It’s also worth noting that only 58% of customers said that they would strongly recommend the company to a friend or family member (eight out of 10 or higher).

Palmetto Solar earned its way onto our list as the best solar energy company in Massachusetts for customer service options. The company specializes in whole-home energy solutions, providing you with a highly rated smartphone app for monitoring your solar panel production and energy usage to help you manage your home’s energy bills.

However, Palmetto Solar does have a few downsides, namely, fewer consumers reported saving $50 or more on their monthly electric bills, despite the company’s elaborate energy monitoring services.

Learn more: Palmetto Solar review

Pros & Cons
  • Highly rated mobile app
  • Roof installation services offered
  • Comes with energy monitoring solutions
  • Fewer reported savings on electric bills
  • Higher costs on average
Customer Survey

Palmetto Solar scored less favorably overall in our survey than the other best solar panel installation companies in Massachusetts. Customers reported spending $26,650 on their solar panel installation with Palmetto, but the average cost across all solar companies was around $25,975, meaning customers spent around $700 more on their system with this company.

Similarly, 64% of Palmetto customers reported experiencing unexpected fees from the installation company, 50% said the total solar system cost was higher than their initial quote and only 58% reported saving over $50 per month on their monthly electric bills.

Trinity Solar specializes in installing solar panels and roofing services on the East Coast, having worked on more than 100,000 roofs to have them ready for solar panels. The company is well-versed in what it takes to ensure you have the proper setup for your solar installation and provides a nice database of information on its website to help guide you on your journey to going solar.

Customers in our survey liked the services they received from pre-installation to post-installation and noticed a significant reduction in their monthly electric bills, but Trinity solar panels may not be the most reliable. Only 46% of Trinity customers said that they didn’t need any repairs during the five or fewer years they had their solar panels installed, and 8% said that they needed three or more repairs.

Learn more: Trinity Solar review

Pros & Cons
  • Offers roof repairs and replacements
  • Top customer service scores in our survey
  • Reported major electric bill reduction
  • No in-house financing
  • Doesn’t have a mobile app
Customer Survey

In our consumer survey, Trinity Solar received the highest ratings among our top Massachusetts solar panel companies for customer service satisfaction throughout the entire process, with 78% of customers saying they were very satisfied with pre-installation services. In addition, 74% said they were very satisfied with the services they received during and since the installation. The same percentage of Trinity customers in our survey reported saving over $50 a month on their electric bills, which is also more than the other companies on our list.

However, Trinity customers reported spending over $200 more than the average on their solar systems.

How to Pick the Best Massachusetts Solar Company for You

The best way to pick a reputable solar company in Massachusetts that ticks all of the boxes for your installation is to have the right questions on hand and research the company to ensure it’s a good one. Here are a few questions to help you get started:

  • What types of solar panels do you carry?
  • What kind of additional solar equipment do you sell?
  • Does your company offer monitoring services for solar panels?
  • Do you do roof repairs or installations?
  • What kinds of warranties do you have?
  • On average, how much does a solar system cost with your company?
  • What kind of financing plans for solar do you offer?
  • What does the installation process look like?
  • Do you do everything in-house, or do you outsource installations or other services to third-party companies?
  • Do your solar panels have the best snow and wind resistance to handle Massachusetts winters?

Ensure you ask these questions to multiple Massachusetts solar companies to compare responses and choose the company that best reflects the qualities you want from an installer. You also want to make sure that the customer reviews are positive and the referrals support high-quality installation services to avoid biased responses from the company.

How Much Does a Solar System Cost in Massachusetts?

The average 6.5 kW solar system costs in Massachusetts is around $18,600, but prices can range from $16,600 to $20,500. Solar costs will vary by company, and you can expect to spend more on high-quality solar panels than you would on low-quality panels, among other factors.

Solar Panel Cost Factors

A slew of variables can alter the cost of your solar panels, making it a little challenging to know exactly how much you’ll spend before speaking with an expert and receiving a quote. Still, these are the most common cost factors that will have the biggest impact on how much you spend:

  • Brand/Quality. Solar panels can be broken down by tier level, with Tier-1 panels being the most advanced and costly, and Tier-3 panels being the cheapest but potentially less efficient. You’ll want to find a balance between cost-effective and efficient panels to get the best return on investment. Look for a solar company in Massachusetts that is committed to getting you there.
  • Size. Since solar systems cost between $2.55 and $3.15 per watt on average, the size of your system will greatly impact the final price tag. By investing in a smaller system and lowering your energy consumption, you can save on energy and solar panel expenses.
  • Labor. The company installing your solar panels will set its own rates depending on competition and other behind-the-scenes factors, making it important to compare quotes from several Massachusetts solar installers.

Solar Incentives in Massachusetts

Massachusetts has one of the most ambitious solar initiatives in the US, with plenty of helpful incentives to help you switch to renewable energy, including:

  • Federal solar tax credit: Expiring at the end of 2025, the federal solar tax credit is a tax credit equal to 30% of the total cost of qualifying solar systems nationwide.
  • Residential Energy Credit: Massachusetts has an energy credit of up to 15% of the total cost of a solar system for up to $1,000 that is applied to your personal income tax.
  • Massachusetts solar property tax exemption: With this policy, even if your solar system increases your assessed value, you won’t have to spend more on your property tax. There are specific qualification requirements, so be sure to check that your system will qualify before counting on it. This exemption lasts for 20 years.
  • State sales tax exemption: You won’t pay the state sales tax of 6.25% on a solar system with this exemption, saving you around $1,150 on average.
  • Net metering: Massachusetts has net metering that allows you to receive credits on your electric bill for excess energy produced by your solar panels that is sent to the grid. Again, be sure to check the requirements to ensure that your system will qualify.
  • Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) program: This program is an incentive-based one that helps eligible residents and businesses develop solar systems in the state.
  • Solar for All program: Not currently active, applicable low-income Massachusetts residents will be eligible to receive a 20% savings on their electric bills and financing assistance for solar installations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is going solar in Massachusetts worth it?

For most homeowners in Massachusetts, yes, going solar is worth it. Solar energy saves on electric bills, reduces your carbon footprint and helps make the world a cleaner place. However, some homeowners may find that the high upfront cost of solar panels isn’t worth the expense, especially with the early expiration of the federal solar tax credit, which will now end on December 31,2025, instead of at the end of 2034.

What is the cost of electricity in Massachusetts?

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, as of May 2025, the average residential price of electricity in Massachusetts was 29.94 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh)—12.47 cents per kWh more than the national average of 17.47. With significantly higher electricity costs, switching to solar is more valuable for Massachusetts residents than for residents in states with more affordable electricity.

What financing options do solar companies in Massachusetts offer?

There are four ways to pay for solar, including cash, solar loan, solar lease and PPA. Solar leases used to be the most popular option when solar panels were more expensive to install, but today, solar loans are by far the most popular method for acquiring solar panels in Massachusetts. With a loan, you won’t incur the extremely high up-front cost of paying in cash, nor will you miss out on ownership after years of a locked-in lease or PPA. Not every company will offer every financing option, though, so be sure to ask about this early.
