Learn more: Momentum Solar review

Why We Picked It

Momentum Solar scored 4.5 out of 5 stars according to our methodology and received points thanks in part to its solar services, high customer satisfaction and payment options. Customers can choose between loans, cash, leases and PPAs with Momentum.

Why We Like It

We like that Momentum only carries Tier-1 solar panels of the highest quality and two types of solar batteries. The company also offers roof repair, home installation, professional monitoring and permit assistance services.

What We Don’t Like

Momentum Solar has a few downsides worth considering. It has low app ratings, with an average of 2.5 stars out of 5. Some customers also report that their installations take longer than many competitors’—around two to three weeks instead of just one, according to our survey.

Who It’s Best For

Homeowners who want a variety of financing options

Pros & Cons
  • Variety of payment options
  • Carries high-quality solar batteries
  • Only offers Tier-1 panels
  • Installation may take longer
  • Fairly low app reviews
Customer Survey

In 2025, we surveyed 1,000 solar consumers who had installed solar panels within the last five years. In our survey, Momentum scored an 8.3 out of 10 for durability and reliability, making it one of the strongest companies in our review. Consumers also reported spending around $550 less on their Momentum solar installation than the overall overage cost from our survey. Additionally, 66% of Momentum customers reported saving over $50 per month on their electric bills after switching to solar.

Qcells was founded in 1999 and has quickly become one of the best solar companies nationwide. It operates in all 50 states and 16 other countries, and prides itself on developing state-of-the-art solar technology. Keep in mind that, unlike many companies on this list, this company is a manufacturer rather than a direct installer.

Learn more: Qcells Solar Panels review

Why We Picked It

We awarded Qcells 4.1 out of 5 points, making it the second-best solar company in New Jersey. Qcells has a reputation for designing reputable solar panels with highly efficient, rigorously tested technology.

Why We Like It

Qcells has strong customer service support and strives to sell the best solar panels on the market. The company’s panels are suitable for extreme climates with high heat, snow, hail or wind. These initiatives are reflected in our consumer survey, where customers rated Qcells highly compared to other solar companies for recommendations, durability, reliability, customer service and money saved on monthly electric bills.

What We Don’t Like

Qcells uses third-party installers to install its solar panels, so you’ll have to work with a middleman to install this particular brand. The company also has low BBB ratings, which clash with the positive feedback we received from our consumer survey. This could be because installations vary by third-party installer. At the time of writing, Qcells only carries three residential solar panels, making it less ideal for those looking to choose from a range of manufacturers.

Who It’s Best For

Locations with high heat, hail, wind or snowfall

Pros & Cons
  • Available nationwide
  • Carries durable solar panels
  • High customer satisfaction
  • No in-house installers
  • Residential customers limited to three panels
  • Conflicting customer reviews about warranty claims
Customer Survey

Eighty-eight percent of consumers in our consumer survey were happy with the quality of their Qcell panels. Customers also reported needing fewer repairs than those who chose other solar companies, with just 32% of respondents needing repairs in the last five years. For savings, 68% mentioned saving over $50 per month on electricity after installing Qcell panels, with 36% saving over $90 per month. This percentage is higher than almost all other solar companies in our survey.

Sunrun was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in San Francisco, California. The company has a strong reputation for providing affordable solar panels to homeowners, with maintenance and repair services to support its customers post-installation.

Learn more: Sunrun Solar review

Why We Picked It

Sunrun earned 4.0 stars out of 5 for its impressive selection of solar batteries. On top of its affordability, Sunrun offers various payment options, including its own Sunrun Subscription Plan, a $0 down solar lease for qualifying customers.

Why We Like It

We like that Sunrun scored highly in our customer survey for cost and customer satisfaction with the process, and reliability of the solar panel installation being a major upside for customers.

What We Don’t Like

Our only real qualms with Sunrun are its lack of inverters and microinverters. The company also doesn’t have live chat, which can be limiting for those in need of quick help.

Who It’s Best For

Anyone wanting affordable solar panels

Pros & Cons
  • Cheap solar panel costs
  • Positive customer satisfaction
  • Sells six solar battery types
  • No live chat feature
  • Lacks some types of solar equipment
Customer Survey

Ninety percent of Sunrun customers reported being satisfied with the durability and reliability of their solar panels. In addition, Sunrun customers reported saving $4,200 on their solar system compared to the national average in our survey, paying just $21,800 for a solar panel system, as opposed to $26,000.

Founded in 2010, Palmetto Solar is a U.S.-based solar company that offers many different services on top of solar panel installations. The company has ambitious goals to produce 1 terawatt-hour of solar energy, enough solar power to supply electricity to nearly 100,000 homes for a full year.

Learn more: Palmetto Solar review

Why We Picked It

Palmetto Solar earned 3.8 points out of 5 through our proprietary data, putting it in fifth place among the best solar panel companies in New Jersey. The company offers roofing installations and energy monitoring services that pair nicely with preparing for and maintaining a solar installation.

Why We Like It

We like that Palmetto Solar offers some of the most comprehensive solar services compared to other solar companies, including roof repairs, professional monitoring and assistance with the acquisition of a solar panel installation. Palmetto also has an array of payment options to help you pay for your solar panels.

What We Don’t Like

Though consumers in our survey report a high satisfaction with their solar system performance and the installation process, the BBB rates Palmetto a D as of this writing for failing to resolve customer complaints regarding post-installation issues. Consumers in our survey also report a slightly higher-than-average cost for their Palmetto system.

Who It’s Best For

Those who want a comprehensive smart home monitoring service

Pros & Cons
  • Offers roof repairs
  • High app reviews
  • Strong monitoring services
  • Slightly higher than average cost
  • Potential issues with warranty claims
  • Customers reported fewer savings on electricity than with competitors
Customer Survey

Our consumer survey suggests that the average solar system cost was just under $26,000, but Palmetto customers reported paying nearly $26,600, or $600 more for their systems. A strong 84% of homeowners reported feeling satisfied with the customer service they received through Palmetto.

However, Palmetto customers reported much lower monthly savings on electricity bills than other companies. Only 58% reported saving over $50 a month on electricity, while 22% reported saving just $10 to $30 per month.

How To Pick the Best New Jersey Solar Company for You

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), there are just over 200 solar companies and developers in New Jersey. This can make it a little tricky to find the best New Jersey solar company for your installation. You should generally keep a few factors in mind, such as company reviews, what these solar companies offer and which areas they serve.

With those and other factors in mind, here are a few questions you can ask to help you pick the right solar company near you:

  • Do you sell Tier-1 solar panels?
  • How resistant are your panels to snow, wind and hail damage?
  • Do you carry solar batteries, inverters and advanced mounting equipment like dual-axis trackers?
  • Do you offer solar system monitoring services?
  • How long are the warranties for the solar panels and workmanship?
  • Does your company have a smart app?
  • Is live customer service available?
  • Do you use third-party installers to install the solar panels?

How Much Does a Solar System Cost in New Jersey?

A solar panel system costs anywhere from $7,700 to $34,700 on average before factoring in any tax credits or rebates. Most New Jersey homeowners spend somewhere between $16,600 and $20,500 for a 6.5-kilowatt (kW) system.

Solar Panel Cost Factors

You can see a huge cost difference in solar panels across the board, so it’s important to know what can impact the price of a solar panel to budget accordingly. Here are some of the most common solar panel cost factors to keep in mind:

  • Size. Most solar panels cost between $2.55 and $3.15 per watt, and typically, the bigger the size, the more you’ll pay overall.
  • Brand/Quality. Each solar panel manufacturer has its own pricing for each panel type and accompanying hardware. High-quality brands that sell Tier-1 panels usually cost more upfront than Tier-2 or Tier-3 panels but may perform more efficiently, saving you over time on energy bills.
  • Labor. Rates vary from solar company to solar company, so it’s best to ask several installers in your area for pricing to get a feel for what the going rate is near you. For example, in our survey, customers across the country reported different installation costs for the same companies. Shopping around can help you secure the best deals and account for third-party price differences.

Solar Incentives in New Jersey

The biggest solar incentive in New Jersey is the federal solar tax credit. Qualifying residents receive a credit on their tax return for 30% of the total cost of their solar panels. Keep in mind that this is currently set to expire at the end of 2025, so your system will need to be installed before then.

New Jersey also has other programs in place to encourage residents to switch to solar energy, like the following:

  • Sales Tax Exemption. New Jersey has a 6.625% sales tax, but solar panels are exempt from the tax, saving you between $1,100 and $1,400 on average.
  • Property Tax Exemption. Installing solar panels can increase your property tax because going solar generally increases the cost of your home. However, New Jersey’s property tax exemption protects residents from this higher cost.
  • Net Metering. With this program, a credit is applied to your electricity bill that is determined by the amount of electricity you send to the energy grid (note that this can’t exceed your annual electric usage)
  • The Community Solar Energy Program (CSEP). A Landfill to Solar Incentive program offers incentives for community solar installations on qualifying landfills.

How To Pay for Solar Panels in New Jersey

The best New Jersey solar companies offer several methods for financing solar panels. Each method has its pros and cons, so let’s go over how you can pay for solar panels in New Jersey to help you weigh your options:

  • Cash. If you have the money set aside, paying in full is a good option for paying for solar panels, as it means you skirt around the interest fees incurred from a loan.
  • Loan. Solar loans are a common payment method for solar panels. The best solar companies in New Jersey offer loans with $0 down and a low interest rate from 3% to 6%. Interest rates can range from 3% to 17%, so avoid companies with terms exceeding 6% if possible.
  • Lease. Compared to buying solar panels, solar leases are no longer as popular as they once were. This is because going solar is more affordable than ever, and solar leases aren’t eligible for ownership or the 30% federal tax credit.
  • Purchase Power Agreement. With a purchase power agreement (PPA), your solar company owns the panels, while you pay a monthly payment based on the amount of energy you use from the panels to power your home.
  • Combo. Some solar companies offer their own financing plan that typically consists of a combination of options, be it paying in cash for a set amount before starting a loan, leasing to own or some other unique and creative method.

Is Adding Solar Panels Worth It In New Jersey?

Solar panels pay for themselves over time, making them almost always a good option for saving on your electric bills in the long run. Upfront, however, some homeowners may find that the high cost of solar panels isn’t worth the investment. Weigh the pros and cons of going solar, and consider these New Jersey factors and potential fees—along with your budget—before deciding.

New Jersey-Specific Factors To Consider When Going Solar

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) states that the average electricity cost in New Jersey was 20.16 cents per kilowatt-hour as of April 2025. The national average for electricity was 17.45 cents per kilowatt-hour. You’ll spend around 2.71 cents per kilowatt-hour more on electricity in New Jersey. This is partially due to high demand and a lack of growth through the supply chain.

EIA data from 2020 shows that the national yearly electricity consumption for households was around 10,600 kWh on average. New Jersey households consumed just over 8,300 kWh of electricity annually. Switching to solar energy may not mean as big of a decrease in electricity bills compared to states that use more energy, but you’ll still see noticeable savings by making the switch because of the state’s higher-than-average price of electricity.

Hidden Costs and Fees When Installing Solar in New Jersey

Sometimes, what you see isn’t necessarily what you get, especially when it comes to paying for solar panels. In our survey, 53% of Northeastern residents reported having some type of unexpected fee for their solar panel installation. Fifteen percent of those who had fees said they were significant, so be sure to ask your solar panel installation company if there are any hidden fees, and comb through the fine print of any contract before signing.
