Learn more: Momentum Solar review

Why We Picked It

We ranked Momentum Solar as the best overall solar company in New York with 4.5 out of 5 points for several reasons. The company scored highly on our customer survey for satisfaction and panel durability. It is also a one-stop shop for going solar, making it easy to design your solar system, choose the best equipment, acquire the necessary permits and have your system up and running.

Why We Like It

Momentum Solar has many strong points that set it apart from other solar companies in New York. For one, the company offers multiple payment options and can help you apply for solar loans through financing partners to make the initial investment more affordable. Momentum only carries Tier-1, high-quality panels that have 25-year performance and comprehensive warranties.

What We Don’t Like

As the number one company on our list, Momentum Solar has very few cons—the biggest one being its poor app reviews. Out of 73 reviews as of this writing, it scored just 2.5 out of 5 stars. Most customers complained of having trouble logging in or receiving accurate, up-to-date readings of their solar system’s energy production. In our survey, consumers were slightly less likely to recommend Momentum compared to some of our other top solar companies.

Who It’s Best For

Homeowners looking for a variety of payment options for solar panels

Pros & Cons
  • Has many financing options
  • Offers roof, window and siding services
  • Carries high-quality, Tier-1 panels
  • Some negative customer reviews
  • Low app ratings complaining of login and performance issues
Customer Survey

In our 2025 survey of 1,000 solar customers who had installed solar panels within the last five years, Momentum earned roughly eight out of 10 points each for pre-installation, installation and post-installation customer service. The company received higher-than-average points for durability and reliability, scoring 8.3 out of 10 points. Sixty-six percent of customers reported saving over $50 per month on their electricity bills after the installation.

Additionally, consumers reported paying nearly $600 less for their Momentum solar system than the average customer across all companies in our review—an average of $25,435 with Momentum compared to the overall average of $26,000.

Founded in 1999, Qcells is one of the biggest solar panel distributors worldwide. The company operates in all 50 states and 14 countries and manufactures its own panels.

Learn more: Qcells Solar Panels review

Why We Picked It

We awarded Qcells a 4.1 out of 5, putting it second on our list of best solar companies in New York. Qcells scored highly for customer satisfaction, availability, financing options and panel quality.

Why We Like It

We like Qcells’ rigorous testing standards and the quality, durability and reliability that come with those standards. Qcells panels offer high heat, snow, hail and wind resistance. The company scored high points across the board in our consumer survey for customer service, and its panels cost less on average than reports from respondents who chose other solar companies.

What We Don’t Like

The main downside to choosing Qcells is that it does not install solar panels, so you must work with a third-party installer to have Qcells panels. Having a middleman leads to a lot of variation from installer to installer, making it hard to predict customer experiences. Qcells currently only carries three residential solar panels, which might not appeal to homeowners looking to mix and match brands.

Who It’s Best For

Homes located in regions with high heat, hail, wind or snowfall

Pros & Cons
  • Widespread availability
  • High-quality equipment
  • Strong consumer ratings
  • Carries just three residential panels
  • Must use third-party installers
  • No live chat
Customer Survey

In our customer survey, Qcells had some of the most impressive responses. According to 88% of Qcells customers, they were happy with the durability and reliability of their panels. Customers also reported needing fewer repairs, with 68% not requiring any solar repairs in the last five years, and 68% saving more than $50 a month on electricity bills with Qcells.

Founded in 2007, Sunrun is a US-based solar company with nearly 20 years of experience installing, maintaining and repairing solar panel systems. The company has an A+ rating through the BBB and is BBB-accredited as of this writing.

Learn more: Sunrun Solar review

Why We Picked It

We awarded Sunrun a strong 4.0 out of 5 stars because of its array of solar equipment—namely, its six different battery storage options. Sunrun also offers a variety of payment options and ranked favorably in our consumer survey for its affordability.

Why We Like It

We like that Sunrun offers options like roof repairs, permit assistance and 24/7 system monitoring. The company has a 4-out-of-5-star rating for its app, which suggests it’s a reliable company for smartphone features.

What We Don’t Like
On the other hand, Sunrun does have a few downsides. The company only offers third-party installation, so your experiences may vary. Sunrun also doesn’t carry inverters of any type, so you’ll need to shop elsewhere for a complete system.

Who It’s Best For

Those on a budget who want to avoid unexpected fees

Pros & Cons
  • Carries several types of solar batteries
  • Has low solar panel prices
  • High customer satisfaction
  • Only offers third-party installation
  • No live chat
Customer Survey

In our customer survey, Sunrun customers reported a 90% customer satisfaction with the durability and reliability of their solar panel system. This is one of the highest rates of customer satisfaction out of all of the solar panel companies on our list.

Additionally, consumers who chose Sunrun reported paying an average of around $21,800 for their system. The average cost of a solar panel system in our survey was $26,000, meaning Sunrun customers spent $4,200 less on their system on average.

Learn more: Trinity Solar review

Why We Picked It

Trinity Solar earned 3.8 points out of 5, putting it in 4th place for the best solar installers in New York. We awarded Trinity high points for its flexible payment plans and 25-year parts and 10-year labor guarantee.

Why We Like It

We like that Trinity Solar installs solar panels and batteries and prepares roofs for solar installations with its roof services. The company carries panels that come with a 25-year manufacturer’s warranty and offers a 10-year workmanship warranty for its solar installations. For roof work, Trinity offers a 20-year manufacturing and 25-year workmanship warranty.

What We Don’t Like

According to customers in our survey, Trinity Solar’s panels cost more than average by around $200. We also noted that Trinity doesn’t offer a mobile app like some of the other top contenders. You also have to use a third party for financing.

Who It’s Best For

Homes that need roof repairs or replacements before installing solar panels

Pros & Cons
  • Offers roof services
  • Carries flexible payment plans
  • In-house team from start to finish for installation
  • Doesn’t offer in-house financing
  • No mobile app
  • May cost more than competitors
Customer Survey

In our survey, 90% of Trinity Solar customers were satisfied with choosing this solar company for their installations. Customers scored the company an average of 8.2 out of 10 when asked if they would recommend it, and they rated the company an 8.2 out of 10 for equipment reliability. Notably, Trinity consumers paid around $200 more for their solar installation than the average consumer in our survey.

Local Solar Companies To Consider in New York

While our team evaluated some of the biggest solar companies nationally that operate in New York, there are also some smaller, local New York solar contractors worthy of honorable mentions, including:

How To Pick the Best New York Solar Company for You

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), there are 219 solar installers and developer companies in New York. All of this competition can make it challenging to know which solar company is right for your home, so use these tips to help you with your decision:

  • Check Google, the BBB, Yelp and other websites for customer reviews before settling on a company.
  • Make sure that the solar panels sold by any particular company are Tier-1, high-quality panels.
  • If you plan on installing a complete solar system, look for companies that sell a variety of solar batteries and other accompanying equipment.
  • To get the most out of your system, search for a company that offers system monitoring through an app.
  • Avoid companies that have short workmanship or performance warranties. The best solar panel companies in New York offer a 25-year warranty minimum.
  • Don’t choose the first company you speak with. Instead, get at least three quotes to compare costs and services.

How Much Does a Solar System Cost in New York?

Most 6.5-kW solar panel systems cost between $16,600 and $20,500, but prices can go for as little as $7,700 for smaller systems or more than $34,700 for larger systems.

Solar Panel Cost Factors

Several factors can impact the cost of going solar, so it’s important to weigh your needs when budgeting for a solar system. Here are the most common cost factors:

  • Size. Solar panels cost between $2.55 and $3.15 per watt. The bigger the system, the more you’ll spend.
  • Brand. Solar panel brands vary in price by product quality and production capacity. Name-brand panels may cost more but come with higher reputations that make them worthwhile.
  • Equipment. If you plan on installing a solar battery system, anticipate spending anywhere between $1,700 and $9,000, depending on the size and quality.
  • Labor. Installers compete to offer the best quotes and win over prospective customers. That’s why we recommend comparing multiple companies.
  • Location. Your location and cost of living can mean higher or lower prices depending on where you live.
  • Quality. Tier-1 solar panels typically cost more than lower-quality Tier-2 or Tier-3 panels but have longer lifespans and perform better.

Solar Incentives in New York

New York is one of the best places in the U.S. to go solar. The state has an ambitious goal to have 70% of its electricity powered by renewable energy by 2030, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a zero-emission grid. As such, the state has its own renewable energy tax credit on top of the national solar tax credit and several other initiatives, including:

  • Federal solar tax credit. The federal solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is a credit equal to 30% of your total solar system cost. You’ll see this credit on your tax return for that year. However, note that only systems installed before the end of 2025 will qualify.
  • Megawatt Block Incentive Structure. Depending on your location, availability, system size and installer, you may receive an incentive per watt for your solar system. It’s currently set at 15 cents per watt, but it typically decreases annually.
  • Net metering. New York has net metering in place, which allows you to receive bill credits for a set rate per kilowatt-hour of electricity your system sends to the electric grid. We recommend checking with your utility company and solar installer about the most up-to-date details.
  • Property tax exemption. The New York property tax exemption prevents residents from seeing an increase in their property taxes after installing solar panels for 15 years.
  • Sales tax exemption. New York has a 4% sales tax, but with the sales tax exemption, you can circumvent this extra expense, saving between $650 and $825 on average.
  • Solar Electric Generating System (SEGS) Tax Abatement. The New York tax abatement is a New York City incentive that reduces the cost of a solar system by 7.5% per year for four years through January 1, 2035.
  • Solar Energy System Equipment Credit. This New York state tax credit is an incentive for qualifying solar energy systems to receive a 25% credit for up to $5,000 that can be carried over from your tax return for up to five years.

How To Pay for Solar Panels in New York

Solar panels have become increasingly affordable over the years, and some payment plans are more beneficial than others, depending on your energy needs and budget. Here are the most common ways to finance solar panels:

  • Cash. One of the best payment options for solar panels in New York is to pay upfront in cash. This method avoids interest rates that can raise the cost of your panels by 3% to 17%.
  • Loan. Given the high cost of solar energy, most homeowners opt for a solar loan to pay off their panels over time. The best New York solar companies offer loans with $0 down, flexible terms, and low interest rates between 3% and 6%.
  • Lease. Solar leases were more common than buying solar panels, but over time, this option became less popular. Solar leases nullify the 30% federal tax credit and don’t give you ownership. You also risk increases in your lease and early termination fees.
  • Purchase Power Agreement. A purchase power agreement (PPA) is similar to a solar lease, except you pay a solar company for the energy you use rather than a fixed lease payment.

Is Adding Solar Panels Worth It In New York?

New York residents have unique benefits that can make going solar worth it. Here are some of the pros and cons of going solar in New York.

New York-Specific Factors To Consider When Going Solar

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) states that most homes spend 17.45 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) on electricity as of April 2025. New York residents spend an average of 25.67 cents per kWh—8.22 cents per kWh more. On the other hand, EIA data shows that New York households consume around 6,900 kWh of electricity per year compared to 10,600 nationally.

Even though New York residents typically consume much less electricity on average, the higher electricity rate means that going solar can still save you significantly on energy bills.

Hidden Costs and Fees When Installing Solar in New York

Some solar companies in New York may have hidden fees that can affect just how affordable it is to go solar. Our survey suggests that a little over 50% of residents in the northeastern part of the country experience an unexpected fee for installing solar panels. Out of those respondents, 15% said that the fees were significant. To avoid hidden fees, read the contract before you sign and double-check with the company for a breakdown of all of the terms and conditions.
