Today, I lost my job as in-house translator!
I am an immigrant in the US, who got countless opportunities and a home here. I met my wife here, who speaks English and Arabic. And with that, I also started moonlighting as a translator between her and my mom, who speaks Hindi and a little bit of English.
Every story, every joke, every emotion passed through me.
And I am sure there are millions of immigrants like me, who are moonlighting as translators in their families, and are the bridge to ensure that nothing gets lost in translation.
That’s why, when
Sharath,
Shawn, and I first talked about building a real-time language translation product, we knew it had to be done the right way, the Sanas way. With our DNA of preserving identity, emotion, and accuracy.
We always dreamed of what FaceTime should have been: not just video and voice, but true understanding.
Today, that dream becomes real. We’re launching
Sanas' first consumer-facing product for Language Translation, and my family is already loving it.
For the first time, my mom can speak to my wife and my mother-in-law in Hindi, just like she would with anyone else. No translator (aka me) required. In our case, love came before technology. But for millions of others, this will be the first bridge that brings people together.
Kudos to Shawn,
Scott,
Sushen,
Jason, and the incredible Sanas engineering team for making this happen. Let's march toward a billion voices and make the world a better understood place.
Yes, I’ve lost my job as a translator. I’ll happily live with that :)
