Greg Skloot shared thisTeam offsites are incredibly valuable: from community building to providing clarity and alignment on business goals. But let's face it, they are also A LOT to plan, expensive, and logistically complex. At the same time, they are really important to get right. After planning and executing 10+ offsites in the last few years, here is my playbook for making your next one a success. Big shout out to Kirsten Newbold-Knipp who provided invaluable insights on this topic that are included in the article.

Greg Skloot shared thisWhen a company is ready to transition from pure founder-led and word-of-mouth sales to building a sales team, I've noticed that many entrepreneurs and operators (my past self included) make a common but critical mistake: We try to start doing sales before we have marketing. This article makes the case for why the order of operations should always be marketing first, and then sales.

Greg Skloot shared thisWe're growing our engineering team! Crystal is looking for another Full Stack Software Engineer to join Tommy Morgan, James Miltenberger and Isaac Wuest to help build the the largest and most accurate personality platform in the world. Please feel free to reach out to myself or Tommy if you'd like to learn more!Greg Skloot shared thisThe team at Crystal is fantastic - and it needs to grow! We need an awesome full-stack engineer to join our engineering team. We need to execute on a new product strategy and also get ready to double the team next year, so there's a lot of great potential to have huge impact! It's also a fully remote role with the option to work from anywhere in the continental US. Which I definitely consider a plus :) If you or someone you know is interested in a role like this at a very exciting startup, please get in touch - I'd love to chat about the opportunity and see if we could be a good fit.
-
Greg Skloot shared thisWe are always thinking about engaging experiences for our remote team to celebrate wins or just spend time together. We just tried a really cool one, Luna Park, a new virtual experience platform. It is a live-hosted interactive game show which was a great way for our team to bond and have fun together, all streaming in from different corners of the country. Thanks for setting us up, Benjamin Anderson! Anyone with a remote team, reach out to Ben so you can try it out too.
-
Greg Skloot shared thisAs we build and scale Crystal over the next few years, our product & engineering team is growing along with it. We're building the largest, most accurate personality platform in the world - it's a huge project that requires close collaboration between data analysis, machine learning, and social science. We're looking for a Head of Engineering to lead the overall technical direction for Crystal. Details are below -- please reach out if you'd like to chat about the role!

We wrapped up the year celebrating together at our PCON Holiday Party and reflecting on a season filled with meaning, impact, and momentum. Thank you to our 2025 President, Greg Skloot for leading us well this year! We are especially excited to welcome the Class of 2026, our largest class in Phoenix Club history. The future of this organization has never felt stronger. A special congratulations to our newest Emeritus inductees, Rohit Padmanabhan, CFA and Walton Denton. Thank you both for your leadership, service, and lasting contributions to PCON and the youth we serve across Middle Tennessee. As we look ahead, we are grateful for a year defined by generosity, leadership, and community and energized for what’s next. This year, we celebrated raising $41,000 for youth-focused nonprofits across Middle Tennessee, funding programs that provide housing, mentorship, education, and opportunity for the next generation of leaders. 🍴 Big flavors. 🎶 Big energy. 💙 Big impact. Great job to board chair Rob E. for throwing and amazing event! Huge thanks to our sponsors, members, and everyone who showed up to make it happen. A special shout out to Massive Mission for being our media sponsor and creating this video! 🗓️ Mark your calendars — Taste of Nashville returns in 2026, and it’s only getting bigger. #TasteOfNashville #PhoenixClub #LeadershipThroughService #YouthImpact #NashvilleEvents

Greg Skloot reacted on thisGreg Skloot reacted on thisHad a pretty insightful day. My co-founder, Zikang Jiang, and I got invited to a Z Fellows event by Cory Levy and Baylor Adams Qasar Younis (founder of Applied Intuition and former COO at YC) shared some insightful thoughts. A few points that stuck with me: 1. Cofounders > Product You could be solving cancer, but if the founding team isn’t perfect, it won’t work. A team of 2–3 is the sweet spot. If you’re not hitting revenue in a year? It’s not the idea—it’s the team. Finding co-founders is like dating. 2. Fundraising reality check If you’ve pitched 10–20 investors and none invest, it’s time for a hard conversation with yourself. Is it the product? Is it you? Maybe it’s time to pivot… or get a fucking job. 3. No one knows what they're doing Every “expert” gives confident advice, often totally contradictory to the next guy. Don’t treat advice as absolute. Use it as direction. I'm gonna start building in public more. Moved to SF for the next few months. Comment if you wanna meet up.

Greg Skloot liked thisGreg Skloot liked thisHey friends—quick favor. I’m looking to meet some great guys in their 20s, 30s and 40s here in Nashville—guys who are driven, curious, love connecting with people, and want to make a lasting, positive impact on our community. Through the The Phoenix Club of Nashville (PCON) I get to be part of a group that invests in each other’s growth while supporting local nonprofits doing incredible work for underserved youth in our city. It’s been one of the most meaningful things I’ve been part of and I’ve been honored this year to lead our new membership process and meet dozens of men who are living their lives with meaning, purpose and service at their core. If you know someone who should be in a group like this—or someone I’d just enjoy meeting—would you send them my way? Tag them below, shoot me a message, or make an intro. Grateful for the help—and excited to keep building something special. In the meantime, if you’d like to learn more about PCON, visit our website at https://lnkd.in/g3m_eGDD

Most founders don’t hire their first finance leader for strategy. They hire them for accountability. When founders say, “We need a senior finance hire,” what they often mean is: “I need someone else to own this.” In a recent conversation I had with Chris Fenster of Propeller Industries, Chris broke down the real reasons first finance hires happen: accountability, credibility, and fixing accumulated “accounting debt”, and why those contexts matter more than titles. Worth watching if you’re approaching your first senior finance hire or feeling pressure from investors. And if you’re thinking more broadly about how finance teams should evolve, we’re hosting a live webinar tomorrow, February 24th at 12pm ET on how finance leaders should actually implement AI: https://lnkd.in/eUAFY86A Thanks to Propeller Industries for sponsoring this series! #FounderAdvice #StartupFinance #Leadership #EarlyStageStartups #VC #ScalingCompanies #PropellerIndustries #FinanceLeaders #AI

The Venture Studio Forum • 29K followers
A Venture Studio ignored venture and won. They built for Cashflow, not Venture. Here is how they did it: 20 years ago, an Atlanta-based venture studio operated with a unique approach. Instead of targeting VC or Private Equity, they focused solely on cash-flow businesses like professional service firms. Here are 2 powerful lessons every studio can learn from their model: ------ 1. Funding Mechanism: A Line of Credit - Companies were funded via a line of credit, not equity capital. - Portcos had to become cash flow neutral within 18 months. - Reduced funding needs = Faster scalability. This setup created discipline. Each month, portfolio founders had to justify every dollar spent. Want to hire McKinsey? Nope—do it internally. Result? Founders learned to obsess over cash flow, an essential entrepreneurial muscle. ------ 2. Picking Founders Wisely Successful founders were not running from bad employers. Instead, they were executives who always dreamed of building something but lacked the timing or resources earlier in life. These proven leaders had: - Strong networks - Deep domain expertise - Relentless drive to finally fulfill their vision They thrived almost every time. P.S. Which of these lessons resonates with you? 👇 Best, Matthew Burris
