There’s a lot of discussion in product circles about “impact.” But let’s be honest: the real flex isn’t leading armies of people, it’s running lean squads that robustly move the business needle. At Navan, product management looks different. Yes, we obsess about elegant flows, seamless UX, and robust architecture. But nobody’s awarding gold stars for pretty backlogs. Here’s the metric that matters: for every product or engineering hire, what’s the actual $ generated? That financial discipline - caring about revenue, costs & margin - is what lets us win with smaller, sharper teams. That’s how you ship prod worth talking about and keep the lights on (and then some). The AI era? It’s only turning the dial higher. The first 70% of a PRD? That’s a 10-minute job now. Engineers are morphing into “prod-engineers” - full-stack thinkers, not just coders. Designers are morphing into "prod-designers". The result? Startups with under 20 people mushrooming everywhere, punching well above their weight, gunning for billion-dollar valuations. The next wave of PMs are not spreadsheet wizards or roadmapping gurus. They’ll think like GMs. Ruthless focus on outcomes, comfort with margin math, keen sense for levers (not just features) influencing teams inside and outside. Because soon, “micro-businesses” will be doing millions in recurring revenue, powered by tight teams and smaller, smarter AI models.
