Michael Frendo reposted thisThe Next Chapter... Three weeks ago, I began a new chapter in my career by joining New Relic, a company widely recognized as the creators of observability. The constant evolution of tech demands a constant evolution of tech to manage, maintain and protect that tech. This is especially true when there are significant tech disruptions. SAAS was such one significant disruption and the need for a different paradigm to manage SAAS was brought to market by New Relic. The growth of observability across applications and infrastructure over the last 2 decades is a testament to that vision. We now find ourselves at another significant disruption in tech, the rapid rise of AI. Most of us in tech likely remember the day that the first significant LLM was released. It was amazing! The speed with which it is developing is also amazing. This is not a technology with a single purpose of delivering new applications. It promises to change every aspect of how we build technology and promises to widely broaden how technology plays a role our lives. AI will deliver a broad range of new software at a rate never seen historically, and it also delivers a new probabilistic paradigm that both opens new vistas and creates a new class observability challenge. It is no longer good enough to know an app is running, it is also necessary to be sure it is not insane 😊 amongst other aspects. Indeed, it is incumbent on New Relic to not just scale observability to the new onslaught of applications but to fundamentally re-invent observability for this new paradigm. I am excited to join as the New Relic CTO to lead a talented group of professionals and to deliver on this challenge. For the last three weeks I have travelled extensively and meet many of the individuals tasked with the new disruption. There will be more travel !

It was a pleasure to join an insightful discussion with Brian Emerson, Chief Product Officer, and Michael Frendo, Chief Technology Officer at New Relic, during their visit to our India office. Three ideas stayed with me: • Becoming AI-first is not only a technology shift, it requires a culture of speed, ownership and proactive customer problem-solving. • Infrastructure + Logs presents significant potential, with logs alone representing an approximately $4B market opportunity. The bigger opportunity lies in connecting logs with applications, infrastructure, traces and business context to provide a unified view. • The future of AI is not necessarily about using the largest model. Faster compute, small language models and open-source innovation allow us to select the right technology for each customer problem. Brian shared how compute-based on consumption can better align cost with actual customer usage and value while remaining transparent and predictable. Michael emphasised that security, governance and trust cannot be afterthoughts. They must be built into AI systems from the beginning. My biggest takeaway: observability is evolving from simply explaining what happened to helping teams predict, decide and act with confidence, especially in an AI-first world. It closed on observability. That wasn't a detour — that was the finding. Because once AI is embedded in production to make everyone's life easier, two questions get expensive to ignore: what data is it actually fetching, and how many tokens is it burning to do it? Nobody at that table was asking whether AI works. They were asking whether they could see it working. Brian Emerson and Michael Frendo of New Relic didn't present.
