On #ThisDayInHistory, September 24, 1965, IBM announced a contract with The National Institutes of Health to install a time-sharing computer system on NIH's 48-building, 350-acre campus, making it the first time-sharing system used by an organization devoted solely to medical research. Soon after, in January 1966, IBM installed a medium-scale System/360 Model 40 at the NIH. This would be the first step toward placing the power of computing at the fingertips of 3,500 scientists. Time-sharing allowed scientists at the NIH to use the power of large IBM computers almost simultaneously, many decades before sharing compute resources through the Cloud was the norm. Across the NIH campus, scientists used typewriter-like terminals to converse directly with the main computer, and answers were then displayed on a screen or recorded on punch cards. This new machine and those installed on-site afterwards initiated a new era of technological advances for medical research.
