I have a vague memory of a Talmud discussion in which someone tried to use a reference from Devarim to elucidate a mitzvah in one of the earlier 4 books but I believe the conclusion was you cannot make a connection 'hekesh' between Devarim (mishneh torah) and the other books since it was written in Moshe's words. I can't find a source for this discussion or something similar to it?

I was wrong, the reference was about an opinion that distinguished Devarim from the other books in regards to the permission to make homiletic connections (smoochim).

see also the ramban here who explains that Smuchim in Devarim is unique because it is considered a single large parsha - possibly because of what you said, that it is all a transcript of Moshe's words. Commented yesterday
