Stephen DeBerry shared thisTIME just selected Braid Health as one of the most significant health tech companies for 2026. Really proud of this portfolio team and excited to see the impact this will have on people’s lives. Check them out!Stephen DeBerry shared thisBraid Health has been named to TIME and Statista’s World’s Top HealthTech Companies 2026 list in the Diagnostics category. Medical imaging can shape some of the biggest decisions a patient faces. The experience around it can still leave people with a file they cannot open and a report they do not understand. We built Braid to make medical imaging easier to access, understand, and act on, from viewing a complete study to receiving an interactive second opinion from a board-certified radiologist. This recognition belongs to our team and to the patients, radiologists, and clinical partners who keep pushing us to make the experience better. See the full TIME list: https://lnkd.in/gMr_6s_V

Stephen DeBerry shared thisSo proud to support Milo. My kids are nearly out of the nest. Man, I wish Ali had this at the beginning of the race! If you’re a parent check out Milo now!Stephen DeBerry shared thisAs so many of you know, I'm building Milo (joinmilo.com), the first specialized AI for parents. We think that tech built for parents should work as hard as they do, and should be as dependable. It’s why our mission is to not only build the most delightful Family AI, but also the most reliable. Today, I'm excited to give a sneak peek into how we’re working with OpenAI on their reinforcement fine-tuning alpha, an important milestone in this mission. Everyday parents deal with a firehose of information and interruptions from WhatsApp snippets to wild font pdfs. Milo's job is to assess what action needs to be taken - create events or reminders. Alert on conflicts or store info for later. Taking on the mental load is not just about processing a school calendar and getting dates into a calendar haphazardly. It means complex family scheduling and conflict detection, multi-part reminders and recurrence rules, accurate event categorization, and consistent formatting of the family calendar so everyone in the family knows what’s going on. That’s been challenging with GPT4o class models, even with fine-tuning and sophisticated prompt work. Our best efforts landed at best around ~70% accuracy. Which might sound great for some categories or a demo, but not what busy parents needed and could trust day in and day out. When I shared with Boris at OpenAI, he suggested we try the RFT alpha on the o-1 class models. The results were encouraging right from the start (first chart). First, the impact of the new advanced reasoning models is clear. Standard models struggled with parent-specific context and formatting needs. We needed a smart model even if slower, not a fast, “dumb” one - and base o-3 mini had a clear improvement in reducing the % of incorrect responses. But the real impact can be seen with the fine-tuning for the shape of common family info actions. We nearly doubled the % of correct actions while drastically decreasing the % of incorrect actions. This may not sound like a big deal but it's one of the most important to a strong foundation. Yes it’s exciting that AI can take on things that are frustrating and overwhelming but how do you have confidence that the agent acting on your behalf is doing the right thing? The thing you wanted? What happens when your AI assistant confuses an early dismissal with a playdate? Or misses a location update for the soccer game? Accuracy isn't just a metric—it's peace of mind for busy parents. Even in way more complex cases with multi-step and detailed reasoning, we're seeing encouraging results that mean we'll be able to really get into the nitty gritty of logistics and conflicts and anticipating things around the corner. Excited to share more over the coming weeks. And if you’re a parent (or know a parent) who could use a little forcefield via simple SMS and work cals, check out Milo - http://joinmilo.com

Stephen DeBerry shared thisThis is a critical issue that will harm each of us if left unchecked.Stephen DeBerry shared thisFull video essay now on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gt2dEUNc Buzzfeed recently published a now deleted article on what AI thinks Barbies would look like from different countries around the world. The results contained extreme forms of representational bias - including colourist and racist depictions, which is something that AI image generators are often prone to doing. With AI image generators like MidJourney, Stable Diffusion, and Dall-E gaining huge popularity, it’s important that we are vigilant about the forms of bias that these technologies can fuel. #Barbie #AI #Midjourney #bias #artificialintelligence

Stephen DeBerry shared thisSo proud of this young lady. She is a formidable health equity warrior!Stephen DeBerry shared thisThank you Lisa Simpson, Margo Edmunds, PhD, FAMIA, and the entire staff AcademyHealth for the opportunity to speak at this year’s Annual Research Meeting on “Options for Building a Successful Health Services Research (#HSR) Career.” As I reflected on what I was going to talk about, the first thought that came to mind was how my own HSR career trajectory was far from linear, and more like the image below, marked by unpaved roads, bumps, and sometimes, even ditches. The second thought that came quickly thereafter were the countless mentors who have walked alongside me on this heroine’s journey over the past two decades and counting. I think about people like John Matsui and the many others at the Biology Scholars Program who’ve taught me how I could transform my frustrations with health and social inequalities that keep me up at night into a career in healthcare/public health. I think about mentors like Nancy Oriol, Marcyliena Morgan, Dr Freada Kapor Klein, and Stephen DeBerry, who reminded me after my father’s passing that even if I had invested a lot of time and effort into what I thought was my “calling”, that is, to become a child psychiatrist, I could start over as my TRUE purpose and calling in life is greater than any title and position I’ll ever hold. I think about David Henderson and Christina Borba who reassured me that there are many ways to serve and build a career in advancing health equity. I think about Tamar Mendelson, Joseph Gallo, Debra Furr-Holden, Renee M. Johnson Johnson, who provided the rich soil for me to grow and thrive as a public health researcher, and hopefully, move the needle on health disparities through applied HSR. I think about people like Von Nguyen who are the movers and shakers of this world, yet still make time for “mentoring moments” and are willing to share their knowledge, even networks, with others such as myself. I think about mentors like Connie Hwang who creates the safe space for me to talk through life’s victories and challenges, great and small, and introduce me to people like Scott David, PCC so I can take my servant leadership to the next level. And third, but certainly not least, I think about my mentors like Edison Machado Jr., MD,MBA, Jesse C. James, Calvin Williams, and Sunny Ramchandani, who have reminded me the importance of authenticity, self-care, and paying it forward to my own mentees, students, and communities, so that even if I’m the first to accomplish certain accolades or sit at certain tables, I certainly won’t be the last. To all my mentors, including those I may have inadvertently forgotten to mention, I thank you for your guidance and support in building a successful HSR career. #ARM21 #leadership #mentorshipmatters

Stephen DeBerry liked thisStephen DeBerry liked thisThe marketing playbook is being rewritten in real time, and the only real edge left is agility and taste of course :). This fall I'm teaching Marketing for Startups at USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy, a grad class built for that kind of speed: 30% undergrads sitting alongside grad students, cross functional teams learning to build modern brands from the ground up. Last week Michael Kittilson, a Trojan mentee of mine, came back to teach a master class on what we call "synthetic audiences" : AI built populations that let you pressure test a message before a single real customer ever sees it. His platform that he created and deploys at the Acceleration Community of Companies (ACC), Definity, already does this for global brands. My students built their own synthetic audiences live in class. One team went broad: eco conscious tech workers, 18 to 34. Another went narrow: Gen Z shoppers who'd pay $100+ for hand sewn clothing. Same exercise, wildly different insights, proof that sharper inputs build sharper strategy. There's something magical about a place where a room this diverse in skill and background gets to learn something, apply it immediately, and pressure test it with real industry expertise, not as a capstone moment, but as the standard. If you're building a brand right now: try testing it on different synthetic audiences before you spend a real dollar on a real one.

Stephen DeBerry liked thisStephen DeBerry liked thisAt Moonshots LIVE, I asked Palmer Luckey why he isn’t building humanoid robots, and his response was... interesting. “I’ve opted out because I believe in them.” Most entrepreneurs see an enormous emerging market and immediately ask: How do I get in? Whom do I have to connect with? Palmer has an entirely different vision of entrepreneurship, starting with one question: If I don’t build this, will it still get built? He believes humanoid robots will have an incredible future, but that’s exactly the reason why Anduril isn’t building them. There are already brilliant teams pouring billions of dollars, talent, and compute into solving humanoid robotics. Palmer would rather build the things that might not exist otherwise. He said something similar about AI, noting that he is uninterested in spending his money on the race to make frontier AI models more capable. There are already plenty of people doing that. What is he doing instead? Funding a $10M XPRIZE around something far less explored, but thought about for decades: understanding animal intelligence and figuring out how we might communicate with wild animals in their own language. There's a really important lesson for founders here... We usually spend so much time asking, "How fast are markets growing, how big are they, where are people putting their money?" instead of asking "WHERE can I have the greatest marginal impact?" I will ask you this: if you stopped working on your company or business tomorrow, would someone else build essentially the same thing?

Stephen DeBerry liked thisStephen DeBerry liked thisI will never forget walking into Gloria Steinem's New York apartment. Filled with articles and artifacts, warmth and community unmistakably in the walls and floors. We sat in a circle, and while she had so much to share with us, her inclination was to be curious about those who were there, the projects and efforts we had underway. That spirit of curiosity, her innate presence, her listening: it all adds up to how this incredible woman did so much in her time with us. She was an icon and an inspiration, and she created so much of the history we now get to live in full. We have so much to thank her for, and so much still to do in her honor. She lit a bright path, and her spirit will live on in so many ways. So many of her quotes are ones I live by, but the one I come back to time and time again feels like the right one to honor her today: "Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning." - Gloria Steinem Here's to all who loved and supported her, and to those carrying on her legacy.

Stephen DeBerry liked thisOura ring has postponed it's IPO due to alleged "market uncertainty." What were not hearing is that OURA is facing a class action lawsuit concerning data privacy. As investors, we don't want to invest in companies that are tied up in lawsuits. Data privacy--and who owns what data-- is one of the most important topics for investors to assess and contend with as we move forward in this digital age.Stephen DeBerry liked thisOura will delay its planned IPO on Nasdaq due to uncertainty in the market for first time offerings. The startup and its shareholders were looking to raise as much as $2.2 billion in the US IPO, which was about four times oversubscribed. Read more: https://bloom.bg/47qUMp4 📷: Businesswire

Stephen DeBerry liked thisStephen DeBerry liked thisMany of the "truths" we accept in the world of investments are really assumptions worth challenging. This is the throughline of my recent conversation with Earnest Sweat and Alexa Binns on Swimming with Allocators. We talk about Positive Sum, the book I wrote for the Ford Foundation, and how it unpacks misconceptions around whether capital can create both strong financial returns and positive social impact (spoiler alert: it can, and it does). We cover a lot of ground, including hurdle rates, externalities, employee ownership, and empathy in management. We also get into some of the research and reading that has reshaped my own thinking over the years. You can tune in here: https://lnkd.in/gNUkSiDC #PositiveSum #ImpactInvesting #MissionInvesting

Climate change will be one of the defining challenges facing the next generation. We have an opportunity and a responsibility to make sure students are prepared not just to understand that challenge, but to lead. The Seal of Climate Literacy will recognize students for their climate knowledge and leadership while empowering them with the skills and experience they need to become the climate leaders of tomorrow. I’m proud to see SB 1048 signed into law and excited to see what the next generation of California climate leaders will accomplish.
