Minecraft system requirements raised for the first time in 17 years — Microsoft now recommends 16GB of RAM and a 2020s or newer CPU to run the Java Edition
The game is about to hit legal age, so it needs big-boy PC specs, too.
Microsoft announced that it’s increasing Minecraft’s minimum and recommended system requirements for the first time in 17 years. According to the company’s blog post, Minecraft: Java Edition will get a spec bump to ensure that the game runs smoothly today and in the future. While it’s understandable that the game’s developers would want to increase the performance of the hardware that the title runs on to implement more advanced features, the new requirements are significantly higher than the previous minimum specification. This could negatively affect players on older hardware that barely hits the minimum requirements, who would have no choice but to upgrade their PCs at a time when RAM prices are at a record high.

The new minimum specifications are quite reasonable, with the recommended specs falling squarely within the performance of the most common hardware in June’s Steam Hardware Survey (which also indicates that AMD now has more than 45% market share compared to Intel). If your system used to be at or higher than Minecraft: Java Edition’s previously recommended specifications, but no longer hits the current minimum requirements, you can switch over to the Bedrock Edition to continue gaming, although you might have to forgo some of your favorite mods.
If you’re running the bare minimum hardware to play Minecraft, Microsoft said that you could still possibly launch the game, although it warned that you might run into some issues. “These updated recommended system requirements won’t stop you from playing Minecraft: Java Edition today. If your computer falls below the new minimum requirements, Java Edition should still launch,” the company said in the Minecraft blog. “However, its performance and visual quality are no longer guaranteed on below-spec hardware, and it may struggle or fail to launch Java Edition in the future – especially as we transition away from OpenGL and towards Vulkan. We will keep players informed of these changes, especially changes that will sunset hardware that previously supported Minecraft: Java Edition.”
This means that you’ll have to spend some money to upgrade your system to just to continue playing your favorite game. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to get a new PC or join a giveaway to be able to play, though. If you know what you’re looking for, you can plausibly buy a used gaming laptop or desktop PC for around $350 to $500 — that should give you about a decade or more to enjoy the game if Microsoft keeps its spec upgrade cadence of 17 years for future versions of Minecraft.

usertests I'm pretty sure I've seen one of the millions of versions being tested on Android tablets with 4 GB of RAM. But I don't play it so I don't know the details.Reply
The Bedrock Edition's Celeron J4105 + 4GB RAM minimum corresponds exactly to crummy Dell Wyse thin clients you can find (no good reason at all to buy those at $40-50). -
Buzdalys This isn't the first time, it's the second. I don't remember what version it was they started recommending 4GB instead of 2, but 16 is too much, 8 is the sweet spot, and I speak as someone who's been playing anything from vanilla to VERY heavily modded versions, 8GB has never been not enough, not even close.Reply -
BertaCowboy They should remove Windows 10 and make the minimum Windows 11.Reply
Windows 10 is epic trash nowadays. And this will force those gamers to upgrade to a modern OS. And before folks push that pro-Win10 nonsense. I would rather use Windows 3.11 than 10. W11 is awesome. -

Windows 11 sucks. I solved some bizarre audio latency issue that was causing crackling/popping in a new Windows 11 install by switching to Windows 10. W11 is badvibe coded.BertaCowboy said:They should remove Windows 10 and make the minimum Windows 11.

and will you pay for the hardware upgrades if needed? cause if i played it, and it ran fine with w10, why would i go to 11?? most comps can run w11 just fine, spec wise... because of the BS TPS requirement, that hardware " isnt supported " i even tried installed w11 on an old socket 1366 based comp.. and w11 ran fine for basic needs...BertaCowboy said:They should remove Windows 10 and make the minimum Windows 11.

I didn't know Minecraft was that demanding for PS4. Many of them ramped up the fans quickly after a few years of use.My nephew's PS4 sounded like a jet when he was playing Red dead 2 many years ago.beyondlogic said:This should have been done years ago the game chugs when there are way to many buildings I particularly remember my son's PS4 on its knees -

Millions of PC's can't easily get 11 to work on their 10 systems. Many very capable processors and rigs . I'm on Haswell and 11 works about the same as 10. Except 11 has more garbage people don't want or need.Even Haswell has enough power to overcome the crud they throw in.Ogotai said:and will you pay for the hardware upgrades if needed? cause if i played it, and it ran fine with w10, why would i go to 11?? most comps can run w11 just fine, spec wise... because of the BS TPS requirement, that hardware " isnt supported " i even tried installed w11 on an old socket 1366 based comp.. and w11 ran fine for basic needs...
11 is creepier than all windows versions. Call it modern, I call it too much crap to deal with and Linux is my main ride now.
